A great year for Brunello and this is like a breath of fresh air, transporting you to Tuscany. Emphasis on dried herbs, leather, campfire smoke with traces of sweet cherry, butterscotch and coffee bean. Love the soft and gentle waves of flavour that gather power through the palate; tannins are grippy and mouthwatering, and this is pretty irresistible. One of the original producers of Brunello in the 1800s, with vineyards planted between 250-400 metres above sea level, still setting the pace.

This substantial red is as savory as it is fruity, boasting cherry, plum, leather, wild thyme, woodsy underbrush, iron and tobacco notes. Burly, with dusty tannins guarding the lingering finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 25,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

Pretty aromas of mango, honey and honeysuckle with stone, lemon-rind and light green-apple undertones. Some guava, too. Medium to full body with beautiful fruit and creamy, exotic fruit on the finish, including passion and lychee. Flavorful and fresh at the end. Always in check and reserve. Drink or hold.

Vinous (89)

Very dark ruby with a garnet core. Pure, high-toned raspberry nose, with hints of clove and cinnamon. Medium-to-full-bodied, with a noticeable bite of acidity but caressing tannins. Red fruit and cranberry flavors show through, though not very forcefully, and the finish is persistent and clean. Not as generous or convincing as it could be given the excellent track record of this estate.

Vinous (96)

Bright dark red. Captivating nose shows a medicinal quality to the notes of sandalwood, minerals, graphite and orange peel. At once silky and explosive in the mouth, providing oustanding density without heaviness and saturating the entire mouth with sweet flavor. A wine of incredible aromatic thrust. The floral lift on the extremely long finish gives the wine an almost Lafite-like clarity.

Vinous (97)

Luminous red. High-pitched aromas of sour red cherry, raspberry, rose, stainless steel, white pepper and minerals. Dense and silky in texture but displays great juiciness, clarity and floral lift; the lively but harmonious acidity really lifts and frames the bright red and mineral flavors. Totally saturates the palate and yet comes off as virtually weightless. This hauntingly beautiful wine showcases everything Brunello can be when made from an ultra-competent producer farming Sangiovese vines that grow in what is a real grand cru section of the much too large Brunello di Montalcino denomination.

The Fuligni family moved from Maremma to Montalcino early in the 20th century, establishing the estate in 1923. Maria Flora has been at the helm since 1971, with her nephew Roberto managing most of the operations today. This historic property has released one of the most exquisite wines of 2016. Revealing its complexities gradually, it unfolds with a smoky flintiness, balsamic nuances and Mediterranean herbs. Seemingly endless in layers and depth, there is generosity but it never weighs the palate down. Powerful, sophisticated tannins are finely powdered, and piercing acidity radiates throughout. Hints of liquorice, violet, blood orange and iron eventually emerge. Lengthy and effortlessly commanding.

Plenty of complexity to this, with cherry, plum, blackberry and hints of cedar and stone. Full-bodied with layered, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Punctuated and defined for the 2017 vintage. Drinkable now, but better after 2023.
