Barbaresco
Barbaresco, seen as the more elegant counterpart of Barolo, spreads over 763 ha under vines (a third of Barolo’s ha), and is divided into four communes.
The Nebbiolo grape is said to ripen earlier here because of the gentler altitude – up to 450 metres – and the proximity to the Tanaro river. The legal guidelines for ageing reflect this, requiring only 26 months minimum of ageing for Barbaresco compared to 38 months for Barolo. Along with altitude, soil variations are another reason for their flavour differences: Barolo and Barbaresco are both limestone-based soils, but Barbaresco's soil is comparatively younger. Stylistically, Barbaresco is often described as a more elegant version of Barolo but, like its neighbour, its wines can come in a diverse spectrum of styles and are never without energy and power.

The 2018 Barbaresco Morassino is bright, finely sculpted and full of energy. The purity of the fruit is so inviting, as is the wine's vibrancy. There is a wild, untamed character that comes through in the bouquet, and yet there is so much going on here, so much to admire. Chalk, white pepper, mint, red berry fruit and blood orange lend brightness throughout. This nervy Barbaresco has a ton to offer.HK$2,300.00 -

The 2017 D'Alceo possesses mind-blowing intensity and pedigree to burn. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2017 is magnificently impressive right out of the gate. Lavender, rose petal, spice, kirsch, mint and violet lead into a core of inky dark blue/purplish berry fruit. Soft contours and suave, silky tannins give the 2017 so much immediacy, but there is plenty of cellaring potential too. In a word: epic.HK$6,120.00 -

The 2016 Sammarco is a dense, flamboyant wine. Inky red fruit, spice, cedar, tobacco, menthol and licorice are some of the notes that build in a statuesque Sammarco that dazzles from start to finish. A wine of stunning textural richness and intensity, Sammarco is translucent, sculpted and full of character. All the elements are so well balanced. Rose petal, cedar, tobacco and mint linger on the eternal finish. The 2016 is a magical wine that can be, surprisingly, enjoyed now or cellared for a number of years. Time in the glass just brings out its energy and vertical drive. Sammarco is quite possibly the single greatest value in high-end Italian wine. Don't miss it.HK$2,830.00 -

A blend of mostly Sangiovese with Cabernet Franc and Merlot in supporting roles, the Castello di Ama 2018 Haiku is a very interesting and somewhat unexpected expression that delivers big richness and lovely concentration, yet the fruit is never too ripe. In fact, it might be a tad underripe in this vintage that saw a few cooler weeks in early summer and some rain toward the end of the growing season. In all, it shows careful balance with an elegant, medium-bodied approach that is propped up by fresh and lively fruit. There are some Cabernet Franc-driven aromas of black olive tapenade. Like the other wines in this portfolio, Haiku is distinctively Mediterranean in personality.HK$2,390.00 -

Neive. Tasted blind. Developed-looking mid ruby with bricky rim. Peppery, concentrated, balsamic nose with top notes of mint and eucalyptus. Supple and rich, but not sweet, cherry fruit with bags of chewy ripe tannins perfectly aligned with the tangy fruit. Ready now. (WS)HK$2,515.00 -

The medium ruby/red 2021 Barbaresco is fresh and inviting with aromas of grenadine, raspberries, orange, mint, and fresh thyme. Elegant and medium-bodied, it continues with wonderfully fresh energy on the palate, revealing fine tannins, a fresh, even spine of acidity, a nice touch of citrus, and a clean, mineral-toned finish. I love the saline notes and freshness throughout. It’s very well done. Drink 2024-2034.HK$1,275.00 -

The 2014 Barbaresco Albesani Santo Stefano offers notable depth and raciness. Dark cherry, plum, sweet spice and floral notes are all given an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness and texture in its striking, exotic Barbaresco. Next to the 2015, the 2014 has a bit more mid-palate ripeness and overall body. This is an intriguing wine from Castello di Neive.HK$2,125.00 -

The 2017 Barbaresco Albesani is a rich, heady wine that very much reflects the south radiance of the year. Super-ripe dark red cherry, red plum, mocha, leather and licorice flesh out nicely. The 2017 is ample, ripe and forward, with enough tannin and structure to develop nicely in bottle for a number of years to come. Like so many 2017 Barbarescos, it is a bit light, especially on the mid palate.HK$3,780.00 -

Within the Albesani MGA, Santo Stefano represents the flagship of Castello di Neive's vineyards. Bright ruby with a garnet rim in the glass, it's focused on graphite minerality and dried cherry, completed by liquorice and a balsamic puff. More extracted than supple on the palate - despite a graceful attack - it is built with grainy, youthful, assertive but sweet tannins, and will develop amazing complexity in time.HK$785.00 -

Macerated black cherry, cloves, leather, graphite and menthol give the 2016 Barbaresco Rabajà-Bas a decidedly somber, rustic quality that also comes through in the wine's feel. I would give the 2016 a few years in bottle to settle down, but I expect it will always be a tannic, four-square powerhouse. This is an especially virile style that speaks more to power than finesse.HK$830.00 -

The 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà is sure to put a smile on readers’ faces. Ample and generous, the 2017 captures the radiant side of the year, which gives the wine so much appeal and also softens some of the firmness that can make Rabajà Barbarescos hard to taste in their youth, although there is plenty of underlying structure. What I love most about the 2017 is the way it envelops all of the senses. It is, quite frankly, utterly irresistible.HK$845.00 -

The 2018 Barbaresco Rabajà is broad and ample in feel, as wines from this site tend to be. Dried rose petal, mint, licorice, black cherry and incense lend striking aromatic presence, but the Rabajà is mostly notable for its overall resonance and feel. Ripeness feels just a bit pushed, but for wines that can be a bit austere in their youth, that is not a bad outcome at all.HK$890.00 -

The 2019 Barbaresco Rabajà-Bas is super-expressive right out of the gate. A beguiling mélange of dark cherry, herbs, menthol, licorice, earthiness and dried flowers gives the 2019 strong savory tones to play off the Nebbiolo fruit. The 2020 Barbaresco Rabajà is compelling. All the elements are in the right place, and that is evident from the very first taste. The aromatics alone are beguiling. Kirsch, rose petal, mint and orange peel lend notable inner sweetness. There's plenty of Rabajà tannin, but at the same time the 2020 is incredibly refined, more Asili than Rabajà.HK$940.00 -
