Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo Capalot Vecchie Viti is another fabulous wine from Burzi. Dark, mysterious and beautifully layered in the glass, the Capalot is just captivating from the very first taste. Macerated black cherry, lavender, sage, spice, coffee and leather are some of the many notes that open over time in a Barolo that is deep yet also wonderfully transparent. The 2017 is so nuanced, so complex, so beautiful. It is also easily the best wine I have tasted from Burzi. |

|
Piedmont | - | 92 (VN) | HK$2,116.42
Vinous (92)The 2017 Barolo Cicala is a powerful, deep wine. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco, scorched earth, chocolate and searing tannins are some of the signatures. The Cicala has plenty of depth, but my instincts say it will mature before the tannins soften. I would prefer to drink this over the next decade, but readers need to expect that the balance is not ideal. |

2017
|
|
Piedmont | - | 92 (VN) | HK$2,116.42
Vinous (92)The 2017 Barolo Colonello is heady, exuberant and super-expressive. Wild cherry, tobacco, cedar, incense and blood orange all race out of the glass. There is something exotic about the Colonello that I find quite alluring. This racy Barolo captures the exuberance of the year, but is not at all overdone. Early signs of maturity in the aromatics and flavors suggest it is a wine for near and medium-term drinking. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo Romirasco is a very pretty and satisfying Barolo. Bright red-toned fruit, mint, blood orange, cinnamon and rose petal give this mid-weight Barolo a good deal of freshness. Deceptive in its mid-weight feel, the Romirasco has plenty of depth. But it is the balance here that is most notable. This is a fine showing, |

Vinous (91)The 2017 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine. Scorched earth, tar, licorice, black cherry and gravel give the Barolo an unusually dark, brooding profile in 2017. As it often is, the 2017 Azelia Barolo offers tremendous character and nuance in its peer group, or any peer group for that matter. Translucent and so expressive, the 2017 has a lot to offer. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is bright and effusive from the very first taste. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, orange peel, spice and mint all grace this nervy, mid-weight Barolo. Medium in body and translucent, the 2017 has quite a bit to offer. It is an especially savory, linear Barolo. |

The Azelia Barolo Cerretta 2017 is a sublime example from the heart of Italy's prestigious Piedmont region. This full-bodied red, born of the Nebbiolo grape, is a product of Azelia, a winery renowned for boutique production of high-quality, distinct wines. Skilfully crafted by fifth-generation winemaker Lorenzo Scavino, the Azelia Barolo Cerretta 2017 charms with a complex array of aromas, including cherries, rose petals, and subtle undertones of truffle. Its robust structure, opulent tannins and vibrant acidity elevate the palate, signifying an ageing potential of decades. The winemaking process employs traditional techniques: the grapes are manually harvested, fermented naturally, and the wine aged in large Slavonian oak barrels. The rich character of the Azelia Barolo Cerretta 2017 perfectly represents the winery's dedication to authenticity, traditon, and elegance. A glass of this wine presents not merely a taste, but an experience, of the distinguished Barolo territory. |

Azelia Barolo Margheria

2017
|
|
Piedmont | - | 94 (VN) | HK$10,662.06
Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo Margheria is gorgeous. Open, perfumed aromatics are immediately alluring. On the palate, the 2017 is a dark, mysterious wine, with layers of flavor that continue to develop over time. Dark cherry, blood orange, spice, leather, iron and scorched earth add striking layers of nuance. The tannins are potent - we are in Serralunga after all - but the 2017 has so much to offer. It's a gorgeous Barolo to enjoy over the next two decades, maybe more. |

2017
|
|
Piedmont | - | 94 (VN) | HK$10,662.06
Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo San Rocco is powerful and tightly wound. All of its energy is focused inward today. There is terrific brightness and focus to the red berry fruit, but the 2017 is not in a mood to show much today. Readers will have to be patient. I am encourage by the wine's solid feel and pure power. |
