Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo Campè is a very pretty, elegant wine. A spine of tannin gives the wine energy and shape, with all the elements so nicely balanced. Another few years in bottle will help immeasurably. |

Vinous (100)The 2017 Barolo Vite Talin is a total stunner. Dark, rich and sensual, the Vite Talin captures all of the natural richness of the heavily virused, low-yielding clone the Sandrone family propagated in their parcels within Le Coste and Rivasi, both in Barolo. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, cedar, tobacco and kirsch are all dialed up in this explosive, heady Barolo. The 2017 is just next-level wine. Superb. |

Piedmont | - | 92 (VN) | HK$10,096.29 | ||||
Vinous (92)The 2017 Barolo Vigna Rionda is another attractive wine in this range. Supple, forward fruit and beams of incisive tannin need time to fully come together. Rose petal, cinnamon, blood orange and crushed raspberry develop with a bit of coaxing. There is good depth to the 2017, but when it comes to Vigna Rionda, one of the greatest vineyards in the world, there just has to be more complexity and character. |

Vinous (92)The 2017 Barolo Marenca is quite understated in this vintage, and not the powerhouse it can be, although that core of strength, that is its key signature, is very much present. Bright red fruit, dried herbs, rose petal, mint and orange peel open with a bit of coaxing. The 2017 is quite a departure from what Pira fans are used to, and yet there is plenty to like. |
