Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

Paying tribute to the traditional wine-making practices of Italy's Piedmont region, the Gianni Gagliardo Barolo Preve 2017 is an exquisite delight for wine enthusiasts. Brought to life in the expert hands of the Gagliardo family, renowned vintners who harbour a deep passion for the Nebbiolo grape, this Barolo epitomises sophisticated elegance. Meticulously crafted from hand-picked Nebbiolo grapes, nurtured in the mineral-rich soils of La Morra, it graces the palate with a crescendo of lush, radiant flavours. Expect a flourishing bouquet of deep, dark fruits elegantly underscored by tasteful hints of rose petal and earth. Adhering to Barolo's historic tradition, the Gianni Gagliardo Barolo Preve 2017 was aged for 24 months in traditional Slavonian oak casks, to draw out the wine's innate complexity and richness. This world-class wine achieves a remarkable balance between raw earthly intensity and silky smoothness, leaving an unforgettable lingering aftertaste of timeless excellence. |

Vinous (94)Canonica's 2017 Barolo Paiagallo is an exotic, utterly beguiling wine. Crushed red berry, blood orange, mint, rose petal and cinnamon give this effusive, mid-weight Barolo its exotic, alluring personality. There's plenty of tannin lurking beneath. A few years of cellaring are advisable. This flamboyant, attractive Barolo is pretty impossible to resist now, though. Canonica works out of a tiny cellar in the historic center of Barolo that has just enough space for the barest essentials. The wines are always unique and idiosyncratic. |

Giovanni Corino Barolo Vigna Giachini
(6x75cl)
2017
|
|
Piedmont | - | 91 (VN) | HK$9,871.22
Vinous (91)The 2017 Barolo Giachini shows its typical pliant personality, but in a more restrained style than is typical. Ripe red berry fruit, cedar, dried flowers, mint and spice fill out its mid-weight frame nicely. There is lovely depth here, if a bit less mid-palate creaminess than in most years. That, in turn, makes the tannins stick out a bit. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo Bricat is delicate, understated and very pretty. A quiet wine, the Bricat offers lovely mid-palate pliancy and depth. The tannins need to soften a bit, but that should not be an issue in another few years' time. Sweet red berry fruit pomegranate and spice nuances flesh out nicely. This soft Barolo is not an obvious wine, but it will delight readers who appreciate finesse. I very much like the brightness and floral lift here. |

Vinous (96)The 2017 Barolo Castelletto captures all of the savory and mineral complexity of this high-altitude site. Ethereal and gracious, the Castelletto has so much to offer. Pine, mint, blood orange, crushed raspberry and star anise are all finely sculpted throughout. This is one of the best Barolos I have ever tasted from Manzone. Don't miss it. |

Vinous (95)The 2017 Barolo Gramolere is broad and ample, yet retains the gracious style that is typical of the Manzone Barolos these days. The fruit profile is a bit darker, though, and there is a bit more of an oak imprint. Black cherry, new leather, menthol and spice all meld together effortlessly as the 2017 blossoms with a touch of aeration. |

Giovanni Rosso Barolo Cerretta
(1x75cl)
2017
|
|
Piedmont | - | 94 (VN) | HK$10,096.59
Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo Cerretta is a dark, ample wine. Black cherry, smoke, leather, licorice and incense lend gravitas to this decidedly brooding, potent Barolo. I would give the 2017 at least a few years in bottle, as the tannins are pretty imposing today. |

|
|
Piedmont | - | 94 (VN) | HK$10,096.59
Vinous (94)The 21017 Barolo Serra is bright, nervy and full of energy. Readers will find a Serralunga Barolo built more on persistence than heft, not a bad thing for a village where the wines can be quite big. Chalk, white pepper, orange zest and spice give the Serra its characteristic brightness. |

Vinous (92)The 2017 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is loaded with savory and earthy accents that complement a dark expression of Nebbiolo. Black cherry, leather, game, smoke, tobacco and licorice build nicely in the glass. A year or two should help soften the Serralunga tannins. |

Boasting eminent Italian origins, the Giulia Negri Barolo Marassio 2017 is delicacy hailing from Piedmont region's Serradenari, the highest vineyard in Barolo. This 100% Nebbiolo varietal is a testament to Giulia Negri's innovative, youthful approach coupled with dedication towards traditional winemaking techniques. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large oak casks. Aged for 30 months, these old-style vessels allow the wine to develop robust, complex characteristics without overpowering the inherent nuances of the Nebbiolo grape. True to its lineage, the Giulia Negri Barolo Marassio 2017 showcases Starbright garnet hues, expressing notes of cherry, raspberry and rose, intertwined with licorice and spice undertones. The taste reveals an elegant harmony of acidity, minerality and polished, integrated tannins. Given the impeccable reputation of Negri, known as 'Barolo Girl', her Marassio 2017 Barolo is guaranteed to increase in depth and complexity with careful cellaring, epitomising the exquisite richness of fine Barolo wines. |
