Barolo
Known as the king of wines, it is potent, complex and long-lived wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. The appellation is spread over 2,134 ha in total and consists of several villages and communes. divided into a multitude of individual vineyard sites and crus similar to Burgundy, with many producers owning small plots of the individual crus.
The main winemaking approach is a long maceration of Nebbiolo grapes - between 30 to 60 days -followed by a long maturation period in large old casks for a minimum of 38 months. And many producers often choose to age their wines even longer than this because of the intense fruit and powerful tannins of their grapes.
The combination of microclimate, altitude, soil, exposition and each winemaker’s individual touch is what makes every Barolo different. And in the main communes such as Serralunga, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra, their Barolos are renowned for certain characteristics unique to each of them, due to their differing soils and exposition.

While Monvigliero gets most of the attention at Burlotto, the Cannubi is often nearly as compelling, and in 2014, it is perhaps a touch more complete. Mesmerizingly vivid and beautiful, the 2014 is deep, powerful and beautifully layered on the palate, with fabulous balance and irresistible allure. In this tasting, I find the Cannubi fleshier and more generous than the Monvigliero. In the cool vintage, the exposure and soils of Cannubi were probably a bit more favorable than those of Monvigliero. Incidentally, a recent bottle of the 2013 more than lived up to the lofty praise I bestowed upon it a year ago.HK$16,300.00 -

The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is another dizzying wine from Burlotto. A rush of dark cherry, plum, hard candy licorice, violet and spice all hit the palate. Powerful and vertical in the glass, the Cannubi simply has it all. I would give the 2015 a good bit of time to shed some of its considerable baby fat. Powerful, dense and packed, the Cannubi is not as showy or seductive as the Monvigliero, but it has so much to offer, especially with a bit of bottle age. What a magnificent wine it is!HK$2,205.00 -

The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is pliant, layered and super-expressive. Even so, readers will have to be patient, as the 2018 needs time to be at its very best. Dark cherry fruit, plum, lavender and spice add gravitas. Like all of these wines, the 2018 is understated and lighter in body than most years, but all the elements are nicely balanced.HK$7,430.00 -

The 2019 Barolo Cannubi is a powerhouse. A Barolo of real substance and depth, the 2019 packs a huge punch. It offers a great foil to the finesse of Monvigliero. Black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol and leather infuse the 2019 with tons of complexity. Here, too, the tannins are wonderfully integrated into the wine's fabric, but make no mistake about it, the 2019 has a ton of tannin!HK$7,925.00 -

Jeweled ruby in color, the 2020 Barolo Cannubi is very attractive on the nose, revealing aromas of raspberry liqueur, pink peppercorn, fresh roses, and toasted anise. Medium-bodied, it’s approachable and fresh, with a rounded midpalate and a weightless feel while having good concentration. Plush tannins float through the finish, as does its long-lasting fruit perfume. This is one of my favorite wines from Cannubi in this vintage and tasted over several days it continued to over-deliver. Drink 2024-2040.HK$2,695.00 -

Burlotto's 1996 Barolo Monvigliero presents a decidedly dark profile of fruit because of the cold growing season. At twenty years of age, the 1996 remains young, powerful and full of life. Time in bottle has helped the elements meld together nicely. Even so, the 1996 remains virile and imposing in style. With a little bit of air, the 1996 can be enjoyed now, but it has plenty of life ahead. Hints of orange peel, tobacco and spice add to the deeply expressive, exotic finish. Readers who own it should be thrilled. In 1996, the Monvigliero is an exotic, beguiling Barolo that emphasizes power over finesse. Part of that is the personality of the year, but the wines have also improved markedly over the last two decades.HK$68,430.00 -

The 2012 Barolo Monvigliero is a wine of extraordinary finesse. Sculpted, precise and beautifully delineated throughout, the Monvigliero possesses striking precision from the very first taste. Vinification with whole clusters gives the Monvigliero its characteristic aromatic lift, but it is the overall finesse of the tannins and the wine's overall balance that stand out most. All the elements are perfectly balanced in a sublime Barolo endowed with tons of personality. The 2012 is pure pleasure to drink today, but it should develop beautifully for the next several decades. Next to some of the other recent versions, the 2012 is gracious and light on its feet.HK$19,100.00 -

Burlotto’s 2013 Barolo Monvigliero is a wine I like to serve at dinners like this one, as I know most people may never taste it, which is a shame. Of course, the 2013 is young, but its profound greatness is evident in the early going, The interplay of aromatics, fruit and structure really brings out the stunning beauty of the Monvigliero cru. The 2013 is simply a phenomenal wine and a towering achievement from Fabio Alessandria.HK$3,230.00 -

Fabio Alessandria of Comm. G.B. Burlotto tells me that he always believed in the controversial 2014 vintage. He never had any doubts regarding the inherent quality buried deep within this difficult vintage with its temperature extremes and humidity-based diseases. The 2014 Barolo Monvigliero ultimately proves to be a fragile and delicate wine with pure essence of wild rose and violet. Monvigliero is known as the perfumed vineyard, thanks to those beautiful floral nuances. While contemplating the bouquet, you feel like you are standing in the middle of a rose garden. The wine offers loose-knit structure with fine tannins that are polished, etched and very linear. Some 7,500 bottles were made in 2014, down from an average annual production of 8,000.HK$4,255.00 -

Decanter (98)
Fabio Alessandria impressed with his Monvigliero 2014. In the cool, rainy vintage he was able to produce a Barolo with a Pinot-like elegance. He was one of the first producers to introduce a small amount of stalks to the Nebbiolo during winemaking. In the warm vintage of 2015 his Monvigliero is extremely pale and garnet-coloured yet full of fresh flowery notes such as peony, violet and rose, with rhubarb plant, wild strawberry and cinnamon candy aromas and flavours. Super elegant, it shows firm, velvety tannins with an austere finish yet a great integration of fruit. Rarely is it possible to taste such a balance of elegance and power.HK$31,430.00 -

The 2016 Barolo Monvigliero is utterly spellbinding in its profoundness. In this vintage, the Monvigliero moves into shades of more blue-toned fruit. Whole clusters, always 100%, are remarkably integrated. Rose petal, lavender, mint, crushed flowers, wild red berries, blueberry, blood orange and mint are some of the many notes that grace this exceptional, silky Barolo. The 2016 was fermented with low temperatures and spent two months on the skins. With its laser-like focus and incredible cut, tension and nuance, the Monvigliero will be slow to reveal itself, but wow - what a wine.HK$28,095.00 -

The Wine Independent (98)
This 2017 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero is from the Monvigliero vineyard, which is the jewel in the crown of Verduno. Often described as the most Burgundy-like of Barolos, this wine lives up to its reputation. It is a medium-deep, bright and youthful ruby color with a rich, dense, intensely perfumed rose garden and hedonistic spice nose with notes of exotic sandalwood. The aromas and flavors are persistent and intense. The soft, round, velvety, silky texture and dense red berry and raspberry coulis flavors combine. There’s a little grip and bite to the tannins and maybe an element of green herb in the background. A lovely, sensual wine.HK$3,760.00 -

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is the most reticent of these 2018 Barolos, but it was also bottled nearly a year later. All the signatures are there, though, starting with the effusive bouquet that makes the Burlotto Monvigliero so alluring. Rose petal, spice, orange peel, kirsch and raspberry unfurl gradually in the glass. The 2018 is understated and mysterious today. I can't wait to see how it ages.HK$46,055.00 -
