Barolo
Known as the king of wines, it is potent, complex and long-lived wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. The appellation is spread over 2,134 ha in total and consists of several villages and communes. divided into a multitude of individual vineyard sites and crus similar to Burgundy, with many producers owning small plots of the individual crus.
The main winemaking approach is a long maceration of Nebbiolo grapes - between 30 to 60 days -followed by a long maturation period in large old casks for a minimum of 38 months. And many producers often choose to age their wines even longer than this because of the intense fruit and powerful tannins of their grapes.
The combination of microclimate, altitude, soil, exposition and each winemaker’s individual touch is what makes every Barolo different. And in the main communes such as Serralunga, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra, their Barolos are renowned for certain characteristics unique to each of them, due to their differing soils and exposition.

The sumptuous 2004 Barolo Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate is fresh and vibrant, with layers of dark fruit that flow from the glass. As it sits, the balsamic, mentholated notes that are characteristic of this wine gradually emerge, along with an attractive spiciness that frames the fruit. It is a weighty, structured Barolo that will require patience, yet it is spectacular today. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020.HK$22,155.00 -

Always released a year later than the majority of the wines, the 2008 Barolo Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e delle Brunate is just as fabulous today as it was last year and every other time I have tasted it. Cool-mineral inflected notes grace the palate in this vibrant, beautifully delineated Barolo. A wine of pure structure and pedigree, the 2008 captivates the senses with layers of dark fruit, pine, menthol, new leather, tobacco, exotic spices and tar. Readers need to give the 2008 at least several more years in bottle, but, wow, what a wine!HK$46,275.00 -

Voerzio’s 2007 Barolo Cerequio is a wonderful counter to the virile, imposing Brunate. Sweet red fruit, flowers and menthol are woven into a nuanced, textured fabric of notable class and elegance. The Cerequio possesses dazzling inner perfume, silky tannins and phenomenal length. It is a stunning, beautifully articulated Barolo blessed with tons of intensity and compelling overall balance. A final burst of red berries informs the long, explosive, perfumed finish. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.HK$15,995.00 -

This is a very perfumed red with cherry, strawberry and rose petal aromas that follow through to a full body, ultra-fine tannins and a fresh finish. Pretty and energetic acidity gives focus and backbone to the wine. So delicious already but better in 2021.HK$7,525.00 -

The 2013 Barolo Cerequio is soft, delicate and understated, with a creamy expression of fruit, silky tannins and exceptional overall balance. Sweet floral notes, bright red stone fruits, mint and cinnnamon give the wine its aromatic lift and presence. The only thing the 2013 is missing is the fruit intensity and exuberance of the very best years. Today, the Cerequio comes across as not fully formed and still recovering from its bottling about two months before this tasting. It will be interesting to see if more vineyard signatures develop over time.HK$7,705.00 -

The 2014 Barolo Cerequio is a gorgeous wine that melds together the pliant fruit of Cerequio with bright, savory aromatics. It’s a combination that works so well. The 2014 is a marvelous, complete Barolo that has so much to offer. Macerated cherry, spice, new leather, blood orange and rose petal all flesh out in a striking Barolo that has so much to offer. One of the first wines I tasted from Voerzio was the 1992 Cerequio, a Barolo from a far weaker vintage that aged beautifully. I expect the 2014 will be gorgeous for many years to come. I can't wait to see how it ages.HK$9,780.00 -

Gorgeous notes of black cherries, tobacco, and licorice emerge from the 2015 Barolo Cerequio, and this beauty is about as seamless and sexy as they come. More spice, toasted almonds, and dried flower notes develop with time in the glass, and it has magical tannins, medium-bodied richness, and a great, great finish. Give bottles 2-4 years and it’s going to impress for a good 2-3 decades.HK$9,570.00 -

Wow. This is archetypal Barolo with a solid cylinder of polished tannins running through the center of the wine from start to finish. Full-bodied and wonderfully constructed with the tannins and beautiful fruit in all the right places. Dark fruit, dried earth and mushrooms with mild, hazelnut notes. Fantastic is the word to describe it. Endless finish. Drink after 2024 and onwards.HK$9,415.00 -

Extremely perfumed and beautiful, offering rose-petal and lavender aromas with some tar to the ripe cherries. Some spice, such as nutmeg, as well as light hazelnut. Fresh. Full-bodied, very tight and compact with firmness and wonderful length and focus. Consistent drive through the center of the wine. Better after 2025.HK$3,125.00 -

This is incredibly deep and tight with dried rose petals, cedar and light plums and strawberries on the nose. The palate is refined and firm with precise balance of fruit, tannin and acidity. This is the first vintage. 50% of this comes from Voerzio crus and the rest comes from an area called Boiolo, near Brunate and Rocche dell’Annunziata. Wonderful balance and depth. Drink after 2022.HK$5,455.00 -

Dried strawberry with asphalt, dried meat and acorns. Lots of flowers as well. Full-bodied and powerful with fantastic depth of fruit and layers of chewy, ripe tannins. An extremely powerful and muscular wine, yet it maintains its energy and verve. Try after 2024.HK$4,275.00 -

Voerzio's 2015 Barolo Fossati is gorgeous. As always, the Fossati has a slightly nervous quality to its tannins. In this vintage, that's a plus, as it gives the wine tension, energy and focus, all of which work so well in balancing the natural radiance of the fruit. This mid-weight Barolo packs plenty of punch and depth/HK$6,805.00 -

A ying yang combination of power and aggression with body and drinkability. Spicy dark fruit – lots of volume and power on the palate, quite ferrous. A masculine virile style of wine. Dark fruit and stones. A 35-40 year old plot. At the top of the vineyard the soils are volcanic and stony. Extending down towards the bottom the soils are more clay-influenced.HK$6,395.00 -
A little closed initially but allow it time and broad, plump but fresh ripe fruits soon sweep across the palate. Initial impressions are of cool berry flavours with a brambly earthiness to the fruit. The palate gradually unfurls with a mix of bright and dark tayberry and loganberry notes with cooling hints of moss and undergrowth, whilst a lingering suggestion of plum sits in the background. Overall this feels like one of the breezier, fresher wines in this cellar albeit in a solidly built style - crisp fruits in a full and gripping structure. Fossati sits mostly in the Barolo commune, tipping into La Morra at its steepest western end. The slope is relatively gentle and the soil is mainly deep and clay influenced, though is much stonier at its steepest part at the top of the hill. As well as soil depth, the vineyard is also characterised by its very uniform east/south east exposure and its high altitude of 340 to 480m above sea level. Voerzio have a small plot planted with 35-40 year old vines.HK$10,310.00 -

The 2008 Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Fossati Case Nere is superb and also a great example of the year. Effusive in its bouquet, the 2008 is so expressive today, but it is also quite young, its freshness makes abundantly clear. Sweet pipe tobacco, mint, dried cherry, licorice, cloves and menthol bring out darker shades of Nebbiolo that work so well here. The 2008 is a wine of somber beauty and nuance.HK$11,110.00 -

Black fruit, smoke, tobacco, licorice and incense all blossom in Roberto Voerzio's 2010 Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Case Nere. Firm tannins provide the backdrop in a Barolo that stands out for its dark, brooding personality. The quality of the tannins is quite similar to that found in La Serra, which lies right next to Fossati. There is an explosiveness to the 2010 that is just waiting to emerge, which I am fairly certain will...in time. Recent bottles of the 2003 and 2004 have been superb.HK$12,400.00 -

The 2011 Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Case Nere wraps around the palate with stunning, utterly sensual beauty. Sweet floral notes meld into expressive red stone fruits in a lifted, perfumed Barolo built on aromatics and silkiness. Exotic orange peel and tangerine notes add brightness on the finish.HK$6,425.00 -

The 2012 Barolo Riserva 10 Anni Case Nere is one of the more aromatically beguiling wines in this range. Smoke, game, sage, rosemary, licorice and crushed rose petals all lift from the glass. A weightless, totally gracious wine, the 2012 Case Nere is wonderfully complete, nuanced and very pretty. Next to the other wines in the range, the Case Nere is a bit fragile and ethereal in feel, but it is the wine's aromatic presence that truly stands out.HK$9,530.00 -

What a surprise. Best La Serra ever from here. Perfection. This is really ripe, with dark and dried fruits. Almost raisiny, with grilled meat too. Full bodied, with an insane amount of power and fruit. Incredible depth and power. Mind blowing. Such power. Explosion of fruit. Give it five or six years of bottle age.HK$20,470.00 -

The 2013 Barolo La Serra is superb. In fact, the 2013 is one of the most impressive young La Serras I have ever tasted from Roberto Voerzio because the tannins are much more polished than is typically the case here, where the high altitude of this site tends to produce sinewy, nervous Barolos. Today, the 2013 is brilliant and super-expressive, with remarkable precision and class. As always, the flavors are bright and floral, with a good underpinning of chalky, mineral-driven tones, with remarkable polish and class to burn. What a gorgeous wine this is.HK$6,680.00
