Barolo
Known as the king of wines, it is potent, complex and long-lived wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. The appellation is spread over 2,134 ha in total and consists of several villages and communes. divided into a multitude of individual vineyard sites and crus similar to Burgundy, with many producers owning small plots of the individual crus.
The main winemaking approach is a long maceration of Nebbiolo grapes - between 30 to 60 days -followed by a long maturation period in large old casks for a minimum of 38 months. And many producers often choose to age their wines even longer than this because of the intense fruit and powerful tannins of their grapes.
The combination of microclimate, altitude, soil, exposition and each winemaker’s individual touch is what makes every Barolo different. And in the main communes such as Serralunga, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra, their Barolos are renowned for certain characteristics unique to each of them, due to their differing soils and exposition.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)The 2001 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is wonderfully precise and vibrant right out of the gate. Still tightly wound, the 2001 is so fresh. It’s a great example of what 2001 has to offer at its very best. Cedar, tobacco and floral tones lead into a core of bright red fruit. Brisk acids pull it all together on the close. I have always loved the 2001. Tonight, it delivers on all the potential I first sensed when it was a young wine. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)The 2004 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe, tasted from magnum, is superb. Floral, leather and spice overtones confer vibrancy. This is just bursting at the seams with intensity in all directions. Brisk acids drive through the mid-palate and the long, sustained finish. What a gorgeous Barolo this is. The 2004 has always been superb; from magnum it is especially compelling. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)Young and still very strapping, the 2008 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is quite the powerhouse. Lavender, tobacco and licorice weave through a core of beautifully layered, dark-toned fruit. Tonight, the 2008 is exceptionally beautiful, vivid and polished. The only issue with the 2008 vintage is that it is surrounded by years that yielded more overt Barolos, specifically 2006 and 2010. The 2008 San Giuseppe was gorgeous upon release, just as it is tonight. Tasted from magnum. |

Wine Advocate (95)The Cavallotto 2011 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is an exceptional wine that really shows the best of Castiglione Falletto, home to some of Barolo's most consistent and age-worthy wines. This bottle offers enormous complexity coupled by power and linear, classic lines. Maceration stopped at 20 days, otherwise the winemaking team feared the results would be overdone and too bold. The bouquet opens quickly to reveal dark fruit, spice, anise seed and licorice. The effect is ethereal and lasting. It would be hard to pin this wine down as being from the warm 2011 vintage in a blind tasting. The acidity is fresh and nicely folded into the background. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)The 2013 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe shows why this is such a tremendous vintage. Potent, searing tannins paint the picture of a youthful, classically austere Barolo that is heading into its second decade in style. Graphite, grilled herbs, tar, sage, tobacco, incense and lavender race across the palate. The 2013 can be enjoyed now with aeration, but ideally it needs more time in bottle. |
