The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Ferrovia is warm, open and supple, with considerable French oak influence lending shape to the fruit. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, tobacco, iron, grilled herbs, raisin and soy are laced into an expressive finish laced with distinctly wild, ferrous notes. The 2009 is quite brooding in style, but it also shows good freshness for the year and outstanding overall balance.HK$5,965.00 -

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Ferrovia is deep, dense and quite attractive. A host of intense savory, ferrous notes hit the palate first, followed by dark red cherry, plum, smoke, leather and licorice. The Riserva is powerful and imposing, with big tannins from the super-extracted fermentation, but it also has plenty of personality. The Riserva will be even better in a few years, once the tannins have softened further.HK$3,390.00 -

Bright, deep red. Musky aromas and flavors of raspberry, red cherry, licorice, herbs and mocha. Silky-sweet and deep, with terrific herbal and sweet spice lift contributing to the wine's superb inner-mouth tension and focus. Finishes with firm acid and tannic spine for long aging but doesn’t taste hard at all. The wine's fruit and perfume expand nicely on the long aftertaste. A serious Brunello that will reward cellaring, though it’s very enjoyable right out of the gate.HK$1,700.00 -

The 2015 Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vignaferrovia from Antinori is a dark, rich and large-scaled effort. Ripe plum and black cherry fruits are somewhat overwhelmed by notes of mocha, tobacco and buttercream. It’s soft and silky in the mouth, showing sweet inner herbal tones, licorice and dark chocolate. While balanced and structured, this is simply too confectionary, focused on ripeness and wood influence over fruit.HK$5,815.00 -

The 2019 Pian delle Vigne Rosso di Montalcino wafts up with an intense display of peppery florals and crushed stone, giving way to masses of black cherry, hints of cocoa and sweet tobacco. The textures are silky and pliant, cast across a medium-bodied frame with ripe red and black berries, wrapped in a web of minerals and rounded tannins which slowly unfurl, making for a tactile feel of youthful tension. This is impressively long and structured for the category, but with primary fruit to match. Antinori really knocked it out of the park with their 2019 Rosso.HK$1,855.00 -

The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is dark yet perfumed, with lavender and violet tones giving way to masses of ripe plum and cherry. Balsam herbs and hints of chalk develop with time in the glass, adding further depths. This is silky and round, with juicy acidity enlivening its ripe red and hints of blue fruit. Sweet spices, hints of cocoa and licorice linger, as the 2020 tapers off long with just a hint of fine tannin. This showboat of a Rosso is going to win a lot of hearts.HK$1,700.00 -

An unforgiving, powerfully structured wine with fabulous grilled-meat, granite, dried-berry and flower-petal character. Full-bodied, chewy and intense. Great structure. Extremely long and intense. Sexy austerity. Gets the juices going. Best ever from here. Reminds me of the great Argianos of the 1970s. Better in 2017 or 2018.HK$3,480.00 -

This is a terrific wine and one of the new releases from Montalcino that I happily include on a short list of top recommendations. The Argiano 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very lively bouquet that is already singing despite the young age of this new release. The wine opens to a dark ruby color with garnet highlights. The bouquet shows a large span of wild berry, earth, licorice spice and medicinal herb aromas. This vintage also reveals a pretty floral character with dried rose potpourri and lavender buds. After fermentation, the wine is aged slowly for 30 months in large oak botte (including 10-, 30- and 50-hectoliter capacity), thus restricting oxygen and gently slowing its evolution. However, the 2015 vintage is naturally expressive and exuberant, and that's the main takeaway here.HK$2,125.00 -

A very polished red with cloves and caramel, on top of black cherries, mushrooms and forest floor. Black olives, too. It's full-bodied with polished tannins and lovely depth all the way through. Lightly chewy. Juicy black-cherries and savory black-olive character. Complex. Drink after 2025.HK$2,500.00 -

The 2015 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva lifts up with a vibrant and spicy display, showing bright cherry and strawberry with mentholated herbal tones, crushed stone and a hint of white pepper. It takes a more savory turn on the palate, as silky textures usher in tart red and black berries, laced with salty minerals. Nervous acids add further tension, while grippy tannins slowly saturate, leading to an intensely structured finish. The 2015 Riserva will need a good amount of time to soften, and I don’t believe its fruit component will be able to keep up.HK$2,620.00 -

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva captivates with a rich, intoxicating bouquet that mixes deep black cherry-berry with plum sauce, balsam herbs, chalk dust and hints of camphor. It fleshes out across the palate, a staining of primary fruits and spices seeming to coat all that it touches in youthful concentration. Zesty acidity creates a refreshing balance in spite of the grippy tannins that settle in toward the close. The result is a wine of poise, structure, but also remarkable length and energy, as tart currants and salty minerals mingle – and, somehow, leave the mouth watering for more. Bravo! Argiano totally knocked it out of the park with their 2016 Riserva, which is a vineyard selection of fruit, refined for two years in 1,500-liter Garbellotto casks.HK$3,295.00 -

A reincarnation of Argiano’s IGT Suolo as a single-vineyard Brunello, without the heavy new-wood use, this is a sleek and exquisite wine. Lifted orange peel defines the nose, which also offers wild strawberries, nutmeg, lightly roasted coffee, glazed cherries and dried herbs. Finely tuned and only medium-to full-bodied on the palate, the tannins taking on a graceful, medium-chewy persona. Suave and delicate, yet long and powerful on the finish. Drink from 2024.HK$6,070.00 -

Dusty black cherry gives way to a mix of cocoa, tobacco, candied ginger and smoke as the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Suolo blossoms in the glass. Its sheer density is something to behold, delivered in velvety waves of opulent red fruits, with hints of tangerine that motivate, setting the entire experience and keeping it fresh and deeply seductive. Fine tannins and minerals mingle through the incredibly long, dramatic finale as the mouth waters for more. Licorice, cacao, plum; it just goes on and on. The 2016 is a rock star.HK$6,805.00 -
