  • Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2015 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (99)

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a total head-turner, vividly fruit-forward yet refined. It's a model of purity. Ripe black cherry, exotic spice, licorice, rose petals, cedar and sage are all delineated in the glass. This is one of the most harmonious wines of the vintage, texturally deep and silky-smooth with masses of red fruits complicated by hints of clove, crunchy minerals and a core of vibrant acidity. Dramatically long and potent yet still fresh, the 2015 echoes with a cascade of spice and inner florals over a complex web of graphite-tinged tannins. Frankly, it's hard not to call this a perfect wine, which it may be one day down the road.

  • Potazzine Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (99)

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is radiant in the glass, showcasing the pure class of this exceptional vintage and the Le Potazzine house style. Lavender and geraniums mix with sweet smoke, black cherries and hints of tobacco as the 2019 entrances the taster. It displays fabulous balance, cool-toned, deep and complex, with masses of ripe red berry fruits that saturate over a stimulating wave of fresh acidity. Tannic and long yet still remarkably fresh, this leaves a pleasantly bitter tinge to pinch at the cheeks as nuances of licorice fade. What an absolutely beautiful Riserva.

  • Renieri Brunello di Montalcino 2011 (6x75cl)

  • Renieri Brunello di Montalcino 2015 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (100)

Earthy aromas of bark, sand, truffles, graphite, rust, terracotta and sandalwood rise up from the deep with Burgundian poise; fruitier orange zest and preserved lemons glimmer in their wake, while riper incense and tar lurk in this dense forest of aromas. Physics itself gives way as the line between reduction and oxidation is blurred. There’s such richness to the center palate, but the fruit there is vivacious and elegant, swaddled in robust but generous tannins that breach the outermost reaches of the mouth. The finish is hauntingly long, the after effects of the acidity unworldly. This is certainly in a quiet, reserved stage of evolution, and will need time to fully mature in bottle. Drink in 2025.

A young Brunello with precision and complexity showing violets, blackberries, bramble berries, tea leaf and minerals. Stone undertones, too. Full body, a compressed palate and firm and velvety tannins. Powerful and long. Truly fantastic. Breathtaking. Better in 2018.

  • Ripe al Convento di Castelgiocondo Riserva Brunello di Montalcino 2016 (3x75cl)

    Decanter (100)

Mocha notes on the nose, coffee, cola, vanilla, cinnamon and pink flowers. Fresh with a tannic hold, ample, massy and fleshy but with such clear definition - tannins are mouthfilling but detailed and nuanced so you feel the precision going on as well as the flavours themselves. Feels extremely well worked, all in its place. I love the chewiness, the concentrated ripeness and overall 'in your face' expression because you feel the detail behind it as well as the nuance ranging from primary blueberry, cherry and blackcurrant fruit to more tertiary elements of tobacco, coffee beans, leather, sweet exotic spices and peppery tones. It's lifted and sophisticated, powerful but poised. What a wine! Amazing potential here. It gives you the chills tasting a wine like this. From vines at 450m on schist-based Galestro soils.

  • Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

A powerful, authoritative wine, the 2011 Brunello di Montalcino packs a serious punch. A host of savory, feral notes hit the palate first, followed by an array of dried cherry, dried flowers, tobacco, smoke, leather and cedar. This is one of the rare 2011s with tannins that need time to soften, as well as the density to develop nicely with further time in bottle.

  • Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino 2012 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino takes its time opening in the glass, gaining in volume and depth with each passing minute. It lifts up with citrus-tinged strawberries, rosemary, blood orange and hints of animal musk. This envelopes the palate with silken textures offset by zesty acidity and tart wild berry fruits, coming across as far more vibrant than expected. It lingers with a tart concentration and lightly grippy tannins while leaving a sour twang that I find very attractive. The 2012 is still maturing in bottle, yet quite close to peak; and if I had to hold anything against it, the finish is a bit shorter than anticipated. That said, it’s a zesty beauty. Only 24,000 bottles were made in 2012 versus the usual 50,000 through a combination of low yields and strict selection.

    Vinous (95)

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is laced with spicy, dark red fruits, wild, sweet and spicy floral tones that give way to savory herbs, hints of animal musk and black earth. On the palate, it's soft, enveloping, almost creamy in texture and offset by a mix of savory spice, fine tannin and saturating mineral tones as black cherry and sage seem to hover on the senses. The finish is spicy and long, structured, but also with vibrant primary fruits holding on strong, as a twang of savory herbs lingers long.

The Castello Romitorio 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a classic expression of the vintage, showing lots of ripe fruit, crushed mineral, herbal nuances and varietal-driven purity. This wine nails that sweet spot between elegance and power that is not easily achieved. • Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino 2017 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The Castello Romitorio 2017 Brunello di Montalcino comes from an estate that is quickly becoming a leader in a special niche of the Montalcino market. The wine is modern and soft, showing lots of contained ripeness and creaminess, yet it successfully embraces the fundamentals of the appellation and Sangiovese, thanks to its bright acidity and finely tuned structure. Few wines reach this level of precision, especially in a challenging vintage such as this.

After tasting and loving the annata, I had high expectations for the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Filo di Seta Riserva. This is youthfully restrained and grumbling in the glass, but it’s worth waiting for, as a captivating display of mentholated herbs, dusty rose, lavender, black cherries, hints of animal musk and crushed ashen stone evolves before your eyes. It’s deeply textural and polished in feel, but also full of zesty, cooling acidity that enlivens the sultry core of dark fruits and exotic spices. A saturation of tannin coats the palate, creating a massively structured and long finale with lingering remnants of salted licorice and inner violet tones. The 2016 Riserva Filo di Seta may be a masterpiece in the making, though it will be many years before it shows all of its hidden beauty.
