James Suckling (95)Stunning rose-petal nose with hints of licorice and herbal tea. The palate has generosity, and the tannins have a polish that's rare in 2014 Barolos. If you like tannins, then you will agree with us that this is already delicious. It also has a long life ahead of it. Better after 2020.

James Suckling (96)Perfumed and very bright with dried flowers, dark berries and a sandalwood undertone. Full body, integrated tannins and a soft and polished finish. Very pretty and structured. Harmonious. Measured. Drink in 2023 or later.

Vinous (92)The 2017 Barolo Cicala is a powerful, deep wine. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco, scorched earth, chocolate and searing tannins are some of the signatures. The Cicala has plenty of depth, but my instincts say it will mature before the tannins soften. I would prefer to drink this over the next decade, but readers need to expect that the balance is not ideal.

Wine Spectator (97)Pure and supple in texture, boasting aromas and flavors of rose, cherry, raspberry, vanilla and toasty oak, this red is pretty seamless already, with refined tannins that emerge on the finish, needing time to absorb the oak. There’s also a saline mineral element that lingers at the end. Best from 2027 through 2048. 495 cases made, 45 cases imported.

Wine Advocate (94)The 2013 Barolo Bussia Colonnello is the most ethereal and delicate of the Bussia series of wines. Fruit is sourced from a portion of the Bussia vineyard that is located closer to the village of Barolo (one kilometer away) than it is the village of Monforte d'Alba (five kilometers away). The sandy soils found here make for softer and tamer tannins especially when compared to the other parts of Bussia. The bouquet opens to aromas of blue flowers, spice, wild berry, licorice and white truffle. This is a softly nuanced and finessed Barolo made with fruit from 45-year-old vines.

Vinous (92)The 2014 Barolo Colonnello is dark and inward. Succulent black cherry, smoke, leather, licorice, menthol and dark spice all run through this unctuous, super-concentrated Barolo. In most vintages, the Colonnello is a bit more aromatic and light on its feet, while the 2014 is a decidedly rich, heady wine, and yet all the elements are in the right place.

James Suckling (98)The luster of new oak shines bright here, as do the very bright and assertively ripe cherries and red plums, as well as orange zest. The tannins are a highlight with a very fluid and fleshy core of red-fruit flavor, building to a tight and long finish. This is regal Barolo. Try from 2023.

Vinous (94)The 2016 Barolo Colonnello is a dark, bold, lush wine full of character. A blast of macerated black cherry, spice, leather, tobacco and menthol infuses the 2016 with striking depth. Resonant and ample, with notable character, the Colonnello is gorgeous in this tasting. In fact, it's one of the finest Barolos I have tasted from the Conterno brothers in a number of years. The substantial finish is a thing of beauty.

Vinous (92)The 2017 Barolo Colonello is heady, exuberant and super-expressive. Wild cherry, tobacco, cedar, incense and blood orange all race out of the glass. There is something exotic about the Colonello that I find quite alluring. This racy Barolo captures the exuberance of the year, but is not at all overdone. Early signs of maturity in the aromatics and flavors suggest it is a wine for near and medium-term drinking.

Vinous (93)The 2020 Barolo Colonnello is a big, strapping wine. Dark-fleshed fruit, new leather, licorice, herbs, menthol, licorice and torrefaction amplify the wine's natural breadth. The Colonnello offers an intriguing mix of forward fruit and supporting structure. New oak notes are perhaps a bit strong, but that's a relatively small quibble at this level.

Wine Advocate (97)This wine blew me away. The 2009 Barolo Riserva Granbussia is a proud achievement and an expression of rare beauty. This wine will be released this fall, some nine years after the harvest. Only 3,000 bottles were produced. The Granbussia narrative is one of elegance and refinement. The fruit comes from two vineyard parcels in the greater Bussia cru and was co-fermented (instead of being blended after malolactic fermentation). So much fruit was dropped during the summer growing cycle that the harvest came later than usual. This allowed for slow, even ripening and a deeper sense of aromatic complexity that you immediately identify here. The nose is redolent of wet earth and autumnal leaf with white truffle and forest berry. The wine offers extreme Nebbiolo purity with anise seed, tar and licorice.

Matthew Jukes (19.5)When they started co-fermenting this wine in 2005, it offered an integration and balance to this label that was missing when it was previously a blended wine. This is never more evident than in this incredible wine. The nose is utterly stunning a mere two and half years after my first taste, and it can only be described as a stellar creation. While the palate is closed, contemplative, hugely dense, and imposing, the link between the floral, tobacco, tea, and chypre-soaked nose and the extraordinary palate is gripping. There is no gap between perfume and palate ? no truck and trailer, just impeccable limousine. Sensational.

Matthew Jukes (19.5)The more powerful and structured elements are kept to the back of the palate, and you are afforded a very generous five or so seconds to revel in the luxuriousness of the indulgent fruit notes before the tannins swarm in and add a shockingly crunchy finish. There is so much red fruit (and not as much obvious Romirasco black fruit) than I expected, and there is impressive anti-fruit sappiness coming from the earth, trunk and powerful surrounding vineyard nuances. I am not surprised that this is such an arresting wine, but its overriding character is one of silkiness coupled with phenomenal freshness on the finish.

Vinous (96)The 2015 Barolo Gran Bussia is a very sexy wine. Ripe, seamless and inviting, the 2015 is impeccably done. Fully ripe tannins wrap around a core of plum, blood orange, sweet spice, pomegranate and new French oak. All the elements are nicely balanced. There's a lot to like about the Gran Bussia, but I find the oak imprint a touch strong. On the other hand, at nearly ten years of age, the 2015 is quite fresh, which deserves to be noted. I find pricing for the Gran Bussia completely out of touch with reality, but it is a very beautiful wine, there's no doubt about it.

James Suckling (98)Beautiful dark fruits of crushed raspberries and blueberries plus hints of champignon mushrooms and black truffles. Lavender undertones. Full and chewy with lots of tannins. Old vines give this a mossy, bark-like undertone. Needs five to six years to come around.
