The 2021 Barolo Francia is a vertical, explosive Barolo endowed with tons of energy. Bright acids and fine beams of tannin provide the framework for this striking young Barolo. All the elements are so well balanced. Time in the glass brings out an interplay of mineral-drenched energy, persistence and textural breadth. There's a lot of structure, and yet the tannins feel fine-grained and finessed. I especially admire its translucent energy. Magnificent.HK$13,305.00 -

I’ve tasted the 2019 Barolo Monfortino three times before bottling at the estate, and it’s one of those vintages where no Francia was made, so all the fruit went into the Monfortino. This is a highly structured expression of the cuvée, yet it shows remarkable finesse and nimbleness in the glass. Aromas of leather, smoky earth, cherries, and floral cologne emerge with clarity and depth. The palate is tightly woven and precise, with firm yet balanced tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, resonant finish. It’s already showing beautifully, and this is truly as good as it gets. The nobility of its structure is profound and promises decades of evolution. Speaking with Roberto Conterno during this tasting, he likened the wine to the 2013, but noted that it carries more elegance even now, something he attributes to the inclusion of Arrione in the final blend.HK$21,590.00 -

The 2020 Barbaresco Faset lifts with a fruity nose of fresh strawberries, pressed roses, and sweet floral and herbal notes. One the palate, it offers ripe, savory tannins with a note of tea leaf and a slightly gamey, earthy texture and feel on the palate, with a bit of grip. Drink over the next 10-12 years.HK$2,980.00 -

The ruby-hued 2021 Barbaresco is savory and ripe with aromas of medicinal herbs, cherry lozenge, sour cherries, salty earth, menthol, and licorice. Medium-bodied, it’s rich through the palate, with ripe tannins and notes of sanguine blood orange as well as iron-rich minerals on the finish. It offers good length and is a rather serious entry. Drink 2025-2035.HK$1,005.00 -

The 2021 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata is a sensual, inviting wine. The latest addition to the range, the 2021 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata marries the finesse of this La Morra site with the depth that runs through all the 2021s. Plush, larger-scaled tannins wrap up a core of dark red fruit, rose petal, spice and blood orange. The 2021 is wonderfully layered and resonant yet also remains light on its feet for such a structured Barolo. Terrific.HK$3,365.00 -

Monsanto's 2013 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Il Poggio is a super-classic, if somewhat austere wine, that is going to need at least a few years in bottle to come around. Today, the elements aren't fully put together, especially on the palate, where the wine is quite awkward. Even so, the wine's aromatic intensity and overall persistence make me hopeful for the future.HK$7,355.00 -

The 2015 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti needs a bit of time in the glass for an initial whiff of reduction to blow off. As it often is, the Pira Vecchie Viti is an exotic wine built on an intriguing mix of aromatic presence and understated structure. In 2015, the two Pira Barolos are not as different as they usually are. While the Vecchie Viti has terrific persistence, it also is a bit fleeting for this wine.HK$6,735.00 -

A blend of fruit from three MGA sites (Bricco Chiesa, Capalot and Fiasco), the Oddero 2021 Barolo reveals cassis and dried cherry, but it also shows extra spice and smoke at the back. You get mineral nuances over a well-structured and firm Nebbiolo. This wine requires a little extra time before it fully opens. Once it does, it offers a beautiful mouthfeel with zesty freshness, minerality and lots of energy. It undergoes a spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, and the wine ages in botte grande for 24 months. Production is 48,000 bottles, and the wine is priced competitively.HK$2,240.00 -

The 2021 Barolo Cannubi marries sensuality and power. Crushed rose petal, macerated cherry, leather, incense and pipe tobacco are suggestive of Cannubi's beguiling qualities until potent tannins hit the mid-palate and finish. The 2021 Barolo Brunate is another compelling wine from Rinaldi. Floral overtones meld into a core of dark red and blue-toned fruits. In this tasting, the Brunate is surprisingly gentle relative to the other wines in the range. That is somewhat unexpected, but also something that works. Hints of lavender, licorice, cloves and coffee build effortlessly, framed by insistent tannins that extend the finish.HK$3,315.00 -

The 2021 Rosso La Gioia is a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. Plush contours wrap around a core of dark red fruit, leather, tobacco and mocha. A kiss of French oak adds an exotic touch. I would give this a year or two in bottle to soften, as the tannins are quite foreboding today. There's plenty of fruit to back it up.HK$3,810.00 -

The 2016 Le Stanze del Poliziano (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot) is filled with brambly dark fruit, leather, earthiness, sage, menthol and licorice. Bold and quite powerful, the 2016 packs a serious punch. I would give it a year or two to come together, as the fruit and tannin are imposing. This is another impressive showing from Poliziano.HK$1,955.00 -

A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, the 2015 Le Stanze is a bold and contemporary wine that offers large-scale intensity and power across a wide array of dark fruit flavors and spice. The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a deep ruby/magenta color. It reveals notes of licorice, Amarena cherries, toasted sage, and forest earth. The 2003 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is a firm, weighty version of this wine. The heat of the vintage has produced a plump, opulent Il Poggio redolent of earthiness, tobacco, smoke, spices and dark fruit. The tannins are big, yet well-integrated, the only open question is whether the fruit will last as long as the wine's structural components. Still, this is a pretty Il Poggio with plenty of upside. Monsanto's 1982 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is a wine I could spend an entire day contemplating. The aromas and flavors meld together seamlessly as this powerful yet graceful wine flows from the glass. Vibrant red cherries, tobacco and spices come to life in a beautiful expression of the Il Poggio vineyard. This wine spent two and half years in cask. (90% sangiovese with 10% canaiolo nero and colorino del Valdarno; pH 3.37; total acidity 5.72 g/l; dry extract 30 g/l; 14.1% alcohol): Bright red. Captivating aromas of redcurrant, sour red cherry, violet and licorice. Then distinctly sweet but not overripe or heavy on the palate, with very fruity, almost lush flavors of dark plum, redcurrant, mocha and clove complemented but not overwhelmed by sexy oak. The long and very graceful finish shows enticing sweetness and fine-grained tannins. One bottle showed signs of premature evolution, but the others were splendid. Absolutely great Chianti Classico in the context of the vintage.HK$2,670.00 -

The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio comes across as surprisingly lean and compact, especially within the context of the vintage. It shows very limited mid-palate sweetness and dry tannins that attenuate the finish. I tasted several bottles and they were all very disappointing for this usually outstanding, benchmark wine. (1x75cl) 2010Vinous (96)
The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Il Poggio is superb, but readers are going to have to be patient, as it is a wine for the cellar. It is quite evident the 2010 has already begun a move into a closed phase, as it is quite shut down in its aromatics. At the same time, the structural profile suggests it will enjoy a long drinking window starting around age 10-12, although that may be optimistic. Energetic, powerful and beautifully layered in the glass - with plenty of translucent energy - the 2010 Il Poggio is a wine to buy and forget about for another decade or so.HK$2,245.00
