Aptly named given the often surprising whiskies they offer, we have come to greatly admire their ability to source blue chip casks and make the call to commit them to glass.
Last year we offered a small allocation of their beautiful 27YO Macallan, unique among its ilk in that it could have survived another three years, been finished in a sherry cask for more colour and bottled as a dark 30-year-old with a price tag twice what they offered it.
However it is that dedication to honest craft and quality that has lead many to consider them one of the finest sources for rare, fine whiskies. Their commitment that any whisky they bottle is the best it can be, not always following fashion in order to get the highest price, that gives us confidence that when we offer our customers Rare Find whiskies they are being offered the best.
Today we are thrilled to present a trio of truly compelling bottles that we think are among the most exciting independent releases in recent years.
Starting with the youngest, the Highland Park 31 is a relative spring chicken in this offering but no doubt among the most coveted names in world whisky.
Gloriously auburn in colour, the nose and palate are equally glamourous. Notes of dark chocolate, damson and fig created a deep-pitched island malt with just a hint at the maritime signature of Orcadian peat. Bottled at a gentle cask strength of 45.8%, showing the enthusiasm the angels had for this one this is a classic Island malt that is a credit to the team at Gleann Mòr's patience!
Following on from the Highland Park is no easy task, but the classic Tomatin Distillery's reputation in recent years has soared to join the top ranks of great Highland malts and has emerged as the darling of a devoted cadre of admirers and this 36YO Rare Find is further fuel for the fire.
It's a complex, well-crafted spirit that clearly has the structure to age for many decades, as this 36-year old demonstrates. Aged solely in a refill sherry butt its entire life and bottled at 48.9%, the less active cask has allowed Tomatin's natural spirit-forward qualities to come through gloriously. At £395 per bottle it is very well-priced compared to £599 for the distillery offering.
Last and certainly not least, the Bunnahabhain 40YO is a magnificent sherry-aged testament to one of the longest lived spirits produced on Islay. Without reliance on peat for flavour, and a unique practice of deliberately undercharging their large stills, this dry, structured spirit takes age better than most, its unique maritime signatures building in intensity rather than burning out, as peat tends to over time. A truly glorious Islay malt that comes in at half the price of the distillery's 40YO (£1,700)!
Venerably mature, priced very competitively and flawlessly executed, these aristocratic malts will be a joy to collectors and the most discerning of drinkers. We have just 12 bottles of each, so don't hesitate in securing some bottles for festive drinking or to hide away into your collection.
