    Abreu Vineyards

    About Abreu

Founded in 1986, Napa Valley’s Abreu Vineyards is, without doubt, one of the leading cult estates in California alongside the likes of Harlan and Screaming Eagle. David Abreu is one of a handful of legends that have shaped the face of Napa Valley’s first-class status, competing with the greatest wines in the world. The sentiments expressed below from the world’s most important critics are as conclusive as anything with regards to the quality of this outstanding producer.

“One of the rarest estates in Napa Valley… These remain some of the most riveting, compelling wines being made anywhere in the world”  - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

“They are exquisite examples of Bordeaux blends that are true first growths in every sense. So how do I go about describing these wines, which are so exciting and satisfying on both hedonistic and intellectual levels”  - Robert M. Parker Jr.

“David Abreu and superstar winemaker Brad Grimes continue to fashion some of the most powerful, concentrated, yet seamless Bordeaux blends in the Valley”  - Jeb Dunnuck

    The Vineyards

Since purchasing the flagship Madrona Ranch in the 1980s, Abreu has acquired three more vineyards in the Howell Mountain district; Cappella, Thorevilos, and Las Posadas, each has a stylistic variation that owes more to their unique terroirs than winemaking techniques. Many compare Abreu to Bordeaux First Growths including the Wine Advocate that has given them no less than eleven perfect scores.

    2015

    Abreu Cappella 2015 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96-100)

The 2015 Cappella should be close to perfection when it is finally released in several years. Inky bluish/purple to the rim, with blackberry, chocolate, graphite, barbecue smoke and forest floor notes, this incredibly rich, pure, structured and powerful wine is multi-dimensional, with huge levels of fruit and glycerin. To say it is a tour de force is almost an understatement. It should have 30-50 years of longevity.

    Vinous (98)

The 2016 Cappella is delicate, elegant and super-refined. Bright floral and spice notes perk up a core of red cherry and plum fruit in a fine, silky wine that speaks to pure refinement. A wine of total grace and finesse, Cappella is absolutely gorgeous in 2016. It is also one of the most polished and nuanced wines I have ever tasted here.

    2013

    Abreu Las Posadas 2013 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (100)

Abreu is now calling his vineyard on Howell Mountain (a tract of 33 acres with 15 planted) Las Posadas, after the road high on the mountain that seems to be the Fifth Avenue of Howell Mountain vineyard sites. The 2013 Las Posadas Proprietary Red was unreal from barrel, and that extraordinary Midas touch exhibited by Grimes and Abreu has extended to this wine out of bottle, which is a showcase for Howell Mountain and the meticulous viticulture and winemaking of Abreu and Grimes. Inky purple to the rim, with an extraordinary nose of sweet mulberry, intense graphite, scorched earth, smoldering wood charcoal, and massive blackberry and cassis fruit, this intriguing and provocative wine also throws in hints of licorice and black truffle. It is extremely rich, full-bodied, and nearly an out-of-body experience. Look for it to improve in age for 40 to 50 years. I can see consumers opening it circa 2065 to 2075 and saying, “Wow – what a great vintage this must have been!”

    Wine Advocate (98-100)

Abreu is now calling his vineyard on Howell Mountain (a tract of 33 acres with 15 planted) Las Posadas, after the road high on the mountain that seems to be the Fifth Avenue of Howell Mountain vineyard sites. The seamless 2015 Las Posadas Proprietary Red nearly redefines opulence, extravagance, and intensity in its haute couture style. A candidate for perfection, the wine has notes of fruitcake, licorice, black truffle, forest floor, spring flowers, and black fruits that literally soar from the glass and continue across the palate with a cascade of earthly delights. This is a magnificent, almost chillingly perfect wine that has to be tasted to be experienced.

    Abreu Madrona Ranch 2001 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

Abreu’s 2001 Madrona Ranch took us into the stratosphere with its super-expressive dark red fruit, floral aromatics and stunning overall balance. There are few Napa Valley Cabernets I would rather drink than those of David Abreu and Brad Grimes. I have been lucky to have the 2001 a number of times. It has never been anything less than stellar.

    2006

    Abreu Madrona Ranch 2006 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96+)

Abreu’s first venture with Cabernet Sauvignon was from the Madrona Ranch, which is essentially the lower hillsides of Spring Mountain, just northwest of St. Helena. The dense purple-colored 2006 Madrona Ranch (55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot) is extraordinary. Its nose of charcoal, espresso roast, blackberries, cassis, crushed rocks, and white chocolate is followed by a ripe, pure wine with a fabulous mid-palate texture (a characteristic of all these wines), and good balance as well as length. It will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and keep for 30 years.

    2007

    Abreu Madrona Ranch 2007 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

A huge, imposing wine, Abreu’s 2007 Madrona Ranch still needs time to shed some of its massive tannins. Bold, ripe and explosive, the 2007 possesses superb depth, not to mention tons of unbridled power. A rush of red stone fruit, rose petal, smoke, licorice and plum, all buffered by beams of tannin, hit the palate in this potent Napa Valley wine. Hints of sage, underbrush and sweet tobacco round out the wine’s multifaceted bouquet. With air, the 2007 can be enjoyed now, but it will drink well for another 15+ years. Production was just four barrels. This is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, and 6% Merlot.

    Abreu Madrona Ranch 2012 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (100)

One of the many highlights in this tasting, the 2012 Madrona Ranch is a real stunner. Bright, nuanced and lively, the 2012 exudes freshness. Blood orange, sweet red berries, mint, cinnamon and a host of bright notes grace the palate. Exquisite, subtle and beautifully nuanced, the 2012 has everything going on. Best of all, the 2012 won't require much cellaring. In 2012, the Madrona Ranch is 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot.

    Abreu Madrona Ranch 2015 (3x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

Pure perfection in a glass, the 2015 Madrona Ranch is more elegant and finesse-driven than the Cappella, yet doesn’t give an inch with regard to power, richness, and length. Coming from a site just outside of St. Helena at the base of Spring Mountain, this beauty is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 11% Petit Verdot, and 2% Merlot. Insane notes of blackcurrant and blueberry fruits, truffle, gravelly minerality, forest floor, and exotic flowers all emerge from this full-bodied wine that has everything you could want from a glass of wine. Full-bodied, thrillingly textured, seamless, and with incredible intensity, it one of those wines where you run out of adjectives trying to describe it. In short, this is a perfect, legendary wine from this awesome winemaker and vineyard.

    Abreu Madrona Ranch 2016 (3x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

A perfect wine in every sense, the 2016 Madrona Ranch comes from a site at the base of Spring Mountain and is a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It does everything right, with a magical bouquet of currants, ground herbs, licorice, graphite, spice, and who knows what else. These all carry to a massive 2016 that has a layered, multi-dimensional texture, building tannins, a colossal mid-palate, and a finish that won’t quit. It’s another heavenly wine from a great terroir and a great winemaker! Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 30-40 years or more.

    2010

    Abreu Thorevilos 2010 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (98+)

David Abreu's 2010 Thorevilos stands apart from all of the other wines in this range for its massive, inky concentration. It is also the last of these wines to be released, which may explain its intense power. A host of graphite, smoke, incense, tobacco, spice and black fruit gradually open up, but the 2010 is a wine for the future. I won't touch another bottle until at least age ten, even though that is almost certainly not going to be enough time to find the wine at its peak of expression.

    Wine Advocate (99+)

The 2012 Thorevilos is flamboyant, phenomenally concentrated, full-bodied, majestic and totally prodigious. It can be drunk young, but most readers will probably prefer to give it a few years of bottle age and consume it over the following 30+ years.

    Abreu Thorevilos 2013 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (100)

The 2013 Thorevilos is a real stunner. Deep, powerful and explosive, the 2013 possesses magnificent structure to match its vivid fruit. Deep and enveloping, the 2013 Thorevilos is an attention-grabbing wine. Crème de cassis, lavender, sage, violet, menthol, graphite, smoke and black cherry gradually flesh out in the glass, but the tannins are going to need much more time than that. Remarkably nuanced for such a big wine, the 2013 is spectacular from the very first taste. The 2013 has always been thrilling. It is all that and more today.

    Abreu Thorevilos 2016 (3x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

Another perfect wine is the 2016 Thorevilos, and my notes on this beauty were laced with expletives. Full-bodied, mammoth-sized aromas and flavors of cassis, crushed flowers, dark chocolate, rare meat, and Asia spices all emerge from the glass. With incredible mid-palate depth, building tannins, and a seamless texture, it has flawless integration of its fruit, tannins, and acidity, no hard edges, and that rare mix of power and elegance. It’s already hard to resist yet will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20-30 years or more.
