Ataraxia
With 34 vintages now under his belt in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Kevin Grant is a pioneer and icon of South African wine who has, in the words of Tim Atkin MW, been 'making great Chardonnays for so long that it's easy to take them for granted'. As head winemaker of Hamilton Russell Vineyards for 10 years, he drove the start of the country's cool-climate winemaking revolution that has pushed South Africa into becoming the most exciting wine country in the world today.
Since founding his own winery Ataraxia in 2004 based on a minimalist approach, he has been making top-quality wines in the breath-taking Hemel-en-Aarde, with what Vinous's Neal Martin calls the 'knack' for 'producing some of the valley's finest Chardonnays'. Atkin unsurprisingly calls Grant a 'Chardonnay wizard who seems to have an innate feel for the variety'.

Tim Atkin MW (95)You know class when you taste it, and this is certainly that. Deservedly established as one of South Africa's most consistently outstanding Chardonnays, this has the structure and concentration to age, with no malolactic at all, 22% new wood and complex, nuanced, stony flavours of lemon zest, oatmeal and stone fruit – Drinking to 2028 |
