Baricci Colombaio Montosoli is a highly esteemed family-run Montalcino estate, with deep roots in the region’s most iconic vineyards. Located in the northern part of Montalcino, on the slope overlooking the city of Siena, their vines are planted in what Forbes calls “Montalcino’s Grand Cru”; the fabled Montosoli vineyard. For centuries Montosoli has been renowned for producing the purest, most ethereal expression of Sangiovese, benefiting from an altitude of 280 metres above sea level and a dynamic composition of marl, marine fossil, schist quartz and Galestro soils. Baricci takes full advantage of those natural gifts, producing a wine that Vinous' Ian d’Agata describes as “remarkably pretty and perfectly balanced Brunello that will perform beautifully with just a few years in the cellar.”

Baricci Brunello di Montalcino 2015 (6x75cl)

Baricci Brunello di Montalcino 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The full name of this estate is Baricci Colombaio Montosoli, and indeed it is one of the protagonists of the celebrated Montosoli vineyard. The Baricci 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is highly distinguished by its mineral side (with marl, marine fossil, schist quartz and Galestro soils), and that is truly the magic of this wine. There is a pungent note of raw grape at first, but it lifts to reveal forest berry, camphor ash and subtle touches of sweet spice. These elements come together like a tightly fitted mosaic. The wine is balanced and fresh, with just enough structure to add firmness and considerable length to its polished mid-weight frame. In fact, mouthfeel is this wine's strongest suit. Acidity is never a problem in Montosoli, located on the north side of Montalcino where day and night temperature shifts play an important role in slow fruit ripening. This warm vintage shows higher extract, but the overall balance allowed Baricci to bottle using very little sulfur (which could account for that little tangy note you get on first nose). The wine went into bottle in July 2019, and 15,000 bottles were made. It was released in January 2020.

Fresh and vivid, this red features cherry, raspberry, plum, floral, black tea and mineral aromas and flavors. The well-defined fruit character is nicely balanced by earthy, savory elements, lively acidity and refined tannins. This is complete, with terrific finesse and complexity.

Baricci Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Nello 2010 (3x75cl)

Baricci Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Nello 2010 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

The excellent 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a wine of impressive texture and depth. Specifically, what sets this Brunello apart from its peers is the masculine personality it so confidently delivers. This is a dark, brooding and expressive wine that boasts a firm sense of place and variety typicity. The bouquet shows defined aromas of dark cherry and pressed blackberry, but it also reveals beautifully etched aromas of spice, licorice and tobacco. The mouthfeel is impeccably polished and fine. It's a true work of beauty and charm. This is a very impressive effort.

Baricci Rosso di Montalcino 2018 (6x75cl)

Baricci Rosso di Montalcino 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

Bright red. Highly perfumed nose offers red cherry, rose petal, violet, tobacco and earth tones, with blood orange nuances providing added lift. Juicy, spicy and sweet, with very concentrated, multifaceted flavours of sour cherry, liquid stones, and candied violet. Harmonious, vibrant acidity lifts and extends the flavors on the supple yet firm finish. Approachable now but structured to age, this exceptionally well-balanced, pure, concentrated wine may well be the best Rosso di Montalcino of the vintage.
