Château Berliquet

About Château Berliquet

Château Berliquet is a heritage estate, founded in 1768 (one of the oldest estates in Saint Émilion). Berliquet was one of the first Saint Émilion estates to sell their wine under their own name (as early as 1784, when most other wines were just called “Saint Émilion”). In July 2017 Berliquet was acquired by the Wertheimer brothers of the Chanel Group (already the owners of neighbouring vineyard Canon, as well as Rauzan-Ségla in Margaux). This is a tiny, boutique, property. The 10ha vineyard is 70% Merlot. The vines here are old, with an impressive average vine age of about 40 years. The vineyard is one large, single block of vines. The terroir is clay, chalk and limestone soils.

90—92 Barrel sample. Very modern, polished in style, a wine whose new wood doesn't mask the rich fruit. The tannins are more to do with wood than fruit. This will be delicious.

Berliquet 2012 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (89+)

An intriguing blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, coming from the limestone plateau of St.-Emilion, a chalky minerality interwoven with blackcurrants, plum and spice are present in this slightly austere, but well-endowed, medium-bodied St.-Emilion. It will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age. This is a solidly made, masculine style of St.-Emilion that should drink nicely for 12-15 years. Berliquet’s yields were a modest 30 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine achieved 14.2% alcohol.

Wine Advocate (83)

The 2013 Berliquet has a light, stemmy nose that lacks a little vigor when I tasted the wine both at the UGC tasting in London and later at the property. The palate is easy-drinking, soft in the mouth with light tannins and simple red cherries and cranberry fruit. The finish is short and rather austere. I like Berliquet's wines but this seems curtailed by the challenging vintage. Drink over the next 2 or 3 years. Tasted February 2016.

Jeb Dunnuck (93-96)

A rough blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Franc made by the team at Canon (Thomas Duclos also consults here), the 2018 Château Berliquet sports a deeper purple color as well as a complex, layered style in its black raspberry, white flowers, dried earth, spice, and forest floor aromas and flavors. It's medium to full-bodied, has a rounded, expansive texture, beautiful tannins, and brilliant freshness and purity as well as a serious kick of minerality on the finish. Coming from a smaller 10-hectare terroir located on the clay and limestone soils on the upper plateau, it will spend 16 months in 45% new French oak. Tasted twice.

Decanter (93)

Vibrant damson in colour. I love the deep creaminess that is evident from the first nose, with hints of cocoa and gunsmoke. There is more clay here than at Canon; about 50% of the vineyard has a clay layer over the limestone whereas at Canon it is closer to 10%, meaning Berliquet is less ethereal, more urgent and powerful, still with precision and feathery chalky tannins. They have restored the underground limestone cellars for barrel ageing. A yield of 45hl/ha. 45% new oak, for what is the 2nd full year of the Canon team working the vineyard.
