Château Canon-la-Gaffelière

About Château Canon-la-Gaffelière

Château Canon-La-Gaffelière now sits proudly as a Saint Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) estate. Count Joseph Hubert von Neipperg purchased Canon-La-Gaffelière in 1971, and the von Neipperg family remain the owners today. Currently, Stephan von Neipperg manages Canon-La-Gaffelière as well as several other Saint Émilion estates owned by the family. Château Ausone is visible from certain points on the property. The vineyards are farmed using 100% organic methods. The small 19.5ha vineyard is planted with 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. The old vines average close to 50 years of age. They also have much older vines which are close to 80 years old. Although this Saint Émilion estate is situated close to many great names in the appellation, before Stephan Von Neipperg took over in 1983, it was never considered in the same league. This is no longer the case, and Canon-La-Gaffelière sits only just below the four Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) properties today (Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Angélus and Pavie).

This is very fresh and multidimensional on the nose and palate. Aromas of blackberry, grilled meat and fresh mushrooms follow through to a full body, with a solid core of firm yet silky tannins and a chocolate, berry and meaty finish. Luscious and opulent. Tight and beautiful.¿'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Best after 2011. 4,580 cases made. -JS

The Cabernet Franc really comes out here, with roasted berry, coffee bean and citrus following through to blackberry. Full-bodied, with fabulous concentration of fruit and supersoft tannins, a long, long finish. This is so juicy and wonderful. No dry tannins here. Score range: 94-97 -JS

Ripe and dense, but very, very sleek, with lovely polish to the texture, which lets the layers of plum sauce, blueberry and boysenberry fruit glide along. Powerful but perfumy. A beauty in the making. Score range: 94-97

Offers a deliciously mouthwatering range of red currant, damson plum, blackberry and loganberry fruit, spiced with hints of black tea and cinnamon and backed by a long, briary, fine-grained finish. A sleek, refined wine that should age well. Best from 2016 through 2028. -JM

Wine Advocate (97)

Composed of 55% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged in French oak, 55% new, for 17 months, the 2015 Canon la Gaffeliere features a deep garnet-purple color and a cedar-laced nose to begin, giving way to fragrant underlying scents of roses and violets with a core of crushed black currants, blackberries and Bing cherries plus hints of fallen leaves and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, the seductively perfumed red and black fruit fills the mouth, framed with plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing very long and minerally.

This pulls a lot of red and black currant, fig and boysenberry pâte de fruit notes together, wraps them with a brambly thread and then drives them through an anise- and apple wood-edged finish. It’s all tightly wound, but it’s all there for the long haul. Really, really solid.

This is really excellent for the vintage with wonderful density of fruit in terms of plum liqueur and creme de cassis. The palate’s plush but velvety with round tannins and a long finish. Should drink fabulously when young. So generous but silky and dialed-in.

A bright, mineral-driven style in the making, with the chalky aspect leading the way, quickly followed by a racy stream of red currant, raspberry and cherry coulis flavors. Has the grip of the vintage, but this is piercingly focused in feel.

Another tour de force in the Comtes von Neipperg lineup, 2019 Château Canon-La-Gaffelière reveals a dense purple/ruby color as well as complex, full-bodied aromas and flavors of red and black currants, tobacco, forest floor, and spicy, floral nuances. Showing the vintage's ripe, sexy, yet also elegant style perfectly, it has silky tannins, a voluptuous, layered mouthfeel, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. Drink this brilliant Saint-Emilion on release and over the following 20-30 years. Tasted twice.
