    Castellare di Castellina

Castellare was formed from five farms in 1968. Owned by Paolo Panerai, it is located in Castellina in the heart of the Chianti Classico area. It is a haven for wildlife with no synthetic chemicals or hunting allowed. Their labels bear images of rare birds seen on the estate. The vineyards are some of the highest in the region. They maintain committed to traditional Tuscan grapes, mostly Sangiovese, in very low yields giving their wine more concentrated flavours and aromas.

Castellare di Castellina Chianti Classico 2018 (6x75cl)

    2018

Castellare di Castellina Chianti Classico 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2018 Chianti Classico is an absolutely joyous wine. Bright red cherry fruit, tangy acids and sweet floral notes all run a translucent, super-expressive Chianti Classico that quite frankly knocks it out of the park. The 2018 is so delineated, so vibrant and just so incredibly delicious. The purity of the flavors is just remarkable. The oak needs a bit of time to fully integrate, but it already has over the last few months. This is what Sangiovese (called Sangioveto here) and Chianti Classico are all about. Best of all, the 2018 is a screaming value. Don't miss it.

Castellare di Castellina Chianti Classico Riserva 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is beguiling and wonderfully nuanced. Lavender, mint, sage, tobacco, spice, leather and dark red/bluish fruits shape the wine with tons of complexity as well as character. This mid-weight, super-classic Riserva captures the Castellare style beautifully. Most importantly, the 2016 offers tremendous value. In fact, as seen through lens of quality for the money, the Riserva is THE wine to buy in this range.

    2016

Castellare di Castellina Toscana Poggio ai Merli 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97+)

The 2016 Poggio ai Merli is gorgeous. That's the short and the long of it. Merlot shows some of its best performances ever in Tuscany in the 2016 vintage. This wine is exceedingly smooth and silky, yet its tightly knit fiber supports a generous profile that ranges from dark cherry to spice, to tobacco and fresh potting soil. On the palate, the wine is rich and large in scope, yet it never leaves behind any residual heaviness. Castellare di Castellina has created a true beauty (with only 4,000 precious bottles made).

    2001

Castellare I Sodi Di San Niccolo 2001 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (92)

Castellare's 2001 I Sodi di S.Niccolò, on the other hand, is beautiful. Sweet dark fruit, leather and spices flow from this layered, structured Sangioveto. Later notes of tobacco and smoke make an appearance as the wine begins to open in the glass. The tannins build on the finish yet always maintain their elegant, refined quality, suggesting this is one of the finer versions of this wine.

    2013

Castellare I Sodi Di San Niccolo 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. This wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels too weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red.

Castellare I Sodi Di San Niccolo 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 2015 I Sodi di San Niccolò is just stratospheric. That's pretty much all there is to it. Plush, deep and explosive, the 2015 possesses magnificent depth. The 15% Malvasia Nera gives tannic backbone and energy to balance the wine's natural richness. Sweet red cherry, cedar, smoke, tobacco and licorice build in a racy, flamboyant Sodi that hits all the right notes. In a word: stunning!

Castellare I Sodi Di San Niccolo 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

Castellare's I Sodi di San Niccolò is the single most overlooked high-end wine in Tuscany today. The 2016 picks up where the 2015 left off. A rush of inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, licorice, gravel, blueberry and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its exceptional balance and pedigree. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 needs a few years in bottle to fully come together. Even so, the 2016 has been nothing less than spectacular on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. In a word: monumental.

Lovely abundance and expression on the nose, you get that perfect clarity of fruit - black fruits and blackcurrant laced with violets. Strong, round and rich - this is densely concentrated with power and punch. Gorgeous texture - dry with firm firm tannins and a direct fruit profile - tension and linearity yet there's plushness and ripeness here too. It's round yet direct but also sweet and succulent. I love that immediately juicy perfumed hit you get on the tongue, such brightness and energy here, the sweet red cherry edge is so delicious. Supremely charming but also fun, such playfulness going on with the flavours and the textures.

    Rocca di Frassinello 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 2013 Maremma Toscana Rocca di Frassinello is a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot (aged in mostly new oak for two years). This is a stunning wine and is, without a doubt, one of the two best wines I have yet to taste from Rocca di Frassinello. The other is the 100% Baffonero Merlot. What distinguishes this wine is the seamless nature of its intensity and its integration. There are absolutely no rough transitions here and the wine wraps smoothly over the palate with firm determination. The dry extract is high (38 grams per liter) and all that heft and density leaves a lasting positive impression.
