Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 2010 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (92)

Castello Banfi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the ripest wines I have tasted from this vintage. The bouquet opens to chewy tones of cherry or raspberry preserves with dried prunes and figs at the back. This is no surprise considering the softly sloping, sea-facing vineyards located in the lower part of the appellation where temperatures are slightly warmer on average. There is no doubt that this is an impeccably crafted wine (it sees 50-50 aging in French barrique and larger oak casks) that aspires to a great level of intensity, power and fullness. The mouthfeel is round and immediate with sweet fruit flavors. This Brunello will appeal to those who like a softer side of Sangiovese.

Good full ruby-red. Roasted currants, cocoa and tobacco leaf on the nose. Suave, broad and ripe, with a savory quality to the red cherry, chocolate and leather suggestions. Closes medium-long and clean, with a lingering savory echo.

Lots of plum and dark-berry character with citrus, cedar and sandalwood. Very pure sangiovese. Full-bodied with firm, racy tannins and cool, vivid fruit at the finish. Some mineral, tar and steel undertones. Needs time to open and soften. Better than the 2015. Try after 2023.

Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alle Mura 2010 (1x300cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The special vineyard selection 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alle Mura opens to brooding dark concentration and an impressive sense of depth. The aromas that characterize the wine are in a school of their own. Instead of the standard red cherry and rose, this expression of Sangiovese gives you rich layers of blackberry pie, Indian spice, cured meat, wet terra-cotta, tar and black licorice. Some 90% of the wine is aged in French barrique and the remaining portion sees large oak casks made with Slavonian oak. Dive further and you begin to sense chocolate and toasted espresso. The tannin management is excellent and there's a distant point of textural firmness that will soften with a few more years of cellar aging. Brunello Poggio alle Mura is one of the biggest wines of the vintage, and you can't knock the quality.

    James Suckling (97)

Lots of dried bark, cinnamon stick, forest floor and earth add to an impression of dried cherries and sandalwood. But there are also hints of caramelized oranges and preserved lemons. The attack on the palate takes immediate effect; the powerful tannins pucker the edges of the mouth with imposing depth, but equally fascinating detail. This is a robust, take-no-hostages style of Brunello with a modern twist of finesse and tension. Drink from 2025.

Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alle Mura Riserva 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura Riserva boasts a rich and deeply alluring bouquet, mixing crushed black cherries, plum and confectioners’ spice, along with lifting notes of cedar and mint. It’s soft in texture, supported by zesty acids with tart red berry fruits and wild herbs tones, yet linear in style and a bit one-dimensional. This drops off rather quickly, leaving a subtle coating of fine tannin along with hints of strawberry rosy florals.

Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio all'Oro 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96+)

I had tasted this as an unfinished product last year at the conclusion of a fascinating explorative tasting of wine from each of Banfi's single-vineyard parcels. With that background in mind, my impression of the Castello Banfi 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio all'Oro remains absolutely optimistic. This wine rocks clarity and intensity of aromas. Forest fruit and dried cherry mingle with powdered licorice and camphor ash. The mouthfeel is polished and glossy. The Riserva Poggio all'Oro is fermented in a combination of stainless steel and wood. Some 70% of the total ages in botte, and 30% goes into new French oak. This wine hit the market in October 2019. Some 15,200 bottles were produced.

Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio all'Oro 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio all'Oro Riserva takes some time to open up in the glass, as a cloud of white smoke and subtle spice slowly dissipates. A few minutes of coaxing reveals dried black cherries, sweet flowery perfumes and hints of tobacco. There are depths of dark textures here, silky in feel but with a blanket of fine-grained tannins, which slowly dominate the expression. That said, there’s a lovely purity to its fruit, along with tactile minerality and mounting inner florals, giving way to a classically structured finish. The Poggio all'Oro is a cru within the Banfi vineyards, and the wine is aged 30% in barrique and 70% in French oak casks of 60-90 hectoliters for 30 months. It’s really quite beautiful and wonderfully balanced.
