Château Cheval Blanc

About Château Cheval Blanc

One of the four Premier Grand Cru Classé A estates in St-Émilion, Château Cheval Blanc was in fact matched solely by the ancient Ausone in this ranking since the system’s foundation in 1955.

Once part of its neighbour Château Figeac, the land which now constitutes this Right Bank legend was purchased by the Ducasse family in 1838 from what was then the 200 hectare Figeac estate. It must have come as some injury to the sensational Figeac’s pride to be ranked one level below its former holdings, but the terroir of Cheval Blanc is irresistible in its majesty.

In the modern era, the team at Château Cheval Blanc is one of the most meticulous and driven in the region. Every facet of viticulture management to terroir analysis to winemaking is pored over and pored over again. For many years, technical director Pierre-Olivier Clouet was assisted by the knowledgeable Professor Kees van Leeuwen on-site, meaning every inch of every vine has been studied and analysed since planting in some cases.

Viniculture

Planted to 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, Château Cheval Blanc is found on the “Pomerol side” of St-Émilion, meaning its terroir is significantly different to that of its ancient peer Ausone. Part of the beauty of St-Émilion no doubt lies in this stark difference, as there is no “perfect” typical style nor plot for the appellation's great wines. Akin to Pomerol in more ways that proximity, the Merlot of Cheval Blanc is planted on gravel whilst the Cabernet Franc rests on well-drained thick clay, the fabled substance abundant at Château Pétrus.

Aromatics are a particular focus of Château Cheval Blanc, with Pierre-Olivier Clouet declaring “that aspect is crucial to us”. This emphasis leads the property to be one of the very earliest to harvest on the Right Bank, an attempt to capture as much delicacy and freshness as possible to layer into its sumptuous bouquet. Famed for its floral, smoky edges and whisps of perfectly ripened fruit, this is truly one of the world’s great wines.

Cheval Blanc 1939 (1x75cl)

Vinous (90)

The 1939 Cheval Blanc is far better than I expected, not least because the bottle had lain in a single cellar virtually its entire life. It is surprisingly deep in color. The nose has retained a sense of vigor, offering black fruit, mint, touches of chimney soot and cracked black pepper – rustic but pleasant. The palate is medium-bodied and a little fleshier than anticipated, displaying an agreeable bitter edge with cedar and sage toward what feels like a more Cabernet-driven, tertiary finish. While it is short and nowhere near as complex as the postwar legends, it is perfectly drinkable and enjoyable.

Wine Advocate (100)

What can I say about this mammoth wine that is more like port than dry red table wine? The 1947 Cheval Blanc exhibits such a thick texture it could double as motor oil. The huge nose of fruitcake, chocolate, leather, coffee, and Asian spices is mind-boggling. The unctuous texture and richness of sweet fruit are amazing. Consider the fact that this wine is, technically, appallingly deficient in acidity and excessively high in alcohol. Moreover, its volatile acidity levels would be considered intolerable by modern day oenologists. Yet how can they explain that after 47 years the wine is still remarkably fresh, phenomenally concentrated, and profoundly complex? It has to make you wonder about the direction of modern day winemaking. Except for one dismal, murky, troubled, volatile double-magnum, this wine has been either perfect or nearly perfect every time I have had it. But beware, there are numerous fraudulent bottles, particularly magnums, of 1947 Cheval Blanc in the marketplace. Having a 1947 Cheval Blanc served out of an impeccably stored magnum three times over the last three years made me once again realize what a great job I have. The only recent Bordeaux vintages that come even remotely close to the richness, texture, and viscosity of so many of these right bank 1947s are 1982 and 1990. Last tasted 10/94

The 1980 Cheval Blanc is a relative success for this mediocre vintage. Medium ruby, with a moderately intense bouquet of herbal, cedary, fruity scents, this wine has medium body, adequate concentration, and a supple, soft finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-may be in decline. Last tasted, 10/90.

Medium garnet-brick colored, the 1985 Cheval Blanc sashays out of the glass with provocative notes of sandalwood, cinnamon stick, cardamom, dried lavender and wilted roses over a core of new leather, cigar box, prunes, raisin cake and dusty soil. Wine Advocate (89)

Since its bottling, the 1989 has frequently been disappointing. In this tasting, it showed better than it has over the last several years. The 1989 is not a great effort for this chateau. The color is already revealing an amber edge, and the lead pencil, cedar, spicy, black fruit, and vanillin-scented nose is more reminiscent of a young Lafite, than the exotic style associated with Cheval Blanc in a hot, dry, ripe year. This medium weight, lightly tannic wine is very approachable. I have rated the 1989 Cheval Blanc consistently between 87 and 89, which is indicative of an excellent wine, but given the vintage terroir, this is not one of the star's of the 1989 vintage. It should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years, as there is moderate tannin in the wine's elegant framework, but readers should not expect any miracles.

The standout wine of the entire tasting. Powerful, smooth, mouthfilling sweetness, still deeply coloured. You will find it hard to track down this wine on the market today, and even more difficult to avoid paying crazy sums for it, but I can assure you that it stands out for the intense, finely picked-out, fleshy fruit notes of sweet damson and plum unrolling against smoked coffee and liquorice notes. Truffles, tobacco and exotic spices are all here – and it’s hard to imagine how it can have done better. Oh, and Le Petit Cheval in this vintage was 98% Cabernet Franc, so another one to look out for if the beauty of the Cabernet in the main wine is anything to go by. Harvest 11-25 September, 40hl/ha yield. They made 76% first wine and 12% Petit Cheval, with the rest sold off in bulk.

Good full red. Profound, multidimensional nose combines redcurrant, plums, raspberry, cherry, mocha and humus: really quite singular. Wonderful sweetness and depth of flavor; lush but with a firm spine. Already offers compelling inner-mouth perfume, but I suspect this wine will soon close down. Finishes with terrific length and very suave, sweet tannins that coat the teeth.

The 1998 Cheval Blanc, a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-brick in color and absolutely explodes with scents of exotic spices, incense, dried roses, cigar box and licorice, with a core of crème de cassis and dried cherries plus touches of black tea and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with rich, plushly textured fruit and then POW—it hits the mid-palate with an explosion of Chinese five spice and floral perfume sparks, leading to an epically long finish. This cannot fail to impress and can easily cellar for another 30 years or more.

The 2005 from Cheval Blanc is a quintessentially elegant, beautiful, deep bluish/ruby-colored wine from St.-Emilion, with raspberry, blueberry, and floral notes, impressive density, great precision, freshness and purity. Full-bodied, but extremely light on its feet, I don’t mean to gush, but it is super-intense, rich and just so meticulously crafted! This is another fabulous wine and a perfect expression for this vintage. It is difficult to forget the gorgeous blueberry and raspberry fruit, full body, sweet tannin, a multi-layered texture, and purity and palate presence of this stunning wine. Drink it over the next 20 years. P.S. In 2005, this was 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Cheval Blanc is a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc. It has the most floral bouquet of the four Serié A Grand Cru Classé: an explosion of crushed violets and potpourri, hints of leather and cigar box, the Cabernet Franc clearly lending this complexity and character. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. It feels wonderfully structured and comes with an insistent grip that coats the mouth. This is backward and almost surly, but you have to stand back and admire the precision and arching structure on the mineral-rich finish. Top-dog Saint Emilion? That's for sure. Tasted January 2016.
