Domaine Sérafin

About Domaine Sérafin

Christian Sérafin is a widely respected producer held in high regard by Robert M. Parker Jr., the second-generation of his family estate, Domaine Serafin, he produces formidable Burgundies that have won over numerous critics. Robert Parker, clearly an ardent fan, makes no effort to hide his admiration towards Sérafin:

“In a village of far too many underachievers, Christian Serafin stands out as one of the sure-handed winemakers. His wines have been remarkably consistent”

Sérafin’s estate includes vineyard holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St.-Denis, and Chambolle-Musigny. His prized Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru plot occupies a mere 0.31 hectares with vines planted in 1946. Today, the estate is managed by Christian’s daughter Karine and niece Frédérique Goulley.

Christian Serafin Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very intense and powerful bouquet with dark cherries, blackcurrant, iodine and pressed violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, yes, a little oaky at the moment, but there is clearly sufficient fruit to back that up and it fans out gloriously towards the blood orange infused finish. This is wonderful.

Serafin Pere & Fils Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes 2015 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes has a clean and pure bouquet with black cherry and boysenberry aromas, plenty of wet limestone scents and pressed violets. It is only with aeration that it presents a Chambolle persona. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, crisp acidity and a pointed, quite floral finish that leaves the mouth tingling.

Serafin Pere & Fils Gevrey-Chambertin VV 2020 (12x75cl)

Burghound (89-92)

(69+ year old vines located in Au Vell , En Champs, Les Marchais, Vignes Belle, Les Crais and Etelois). A slightly riper if otherwise similar nose introduces equally sleek, vibrant and delineated medium-bodied flavors possess better density and a lovely texture while displaying a refreshing salinity on the firm, serious and built-to-age finish. This wine has an excellent track record for developing well and the 2020 version should be no exception provided it is allowed to do so. (89-92)/2028+

Serafin Pere & Fils Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes 2012 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes from Christian Serafin has a generous nose with plenty of minty red berry fruit, the oak more obvious here than Virgile Lignier’s Les Chenevery 2012, but still with impressive intensity and becoming more and more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannin, a firm grip in the mouth, plenty of oak but there is sufficient fruit to support it. It does not have the panache of its peers, but it is a mouthful of delicious Morey-Saint-Denis that probably needs another two or three years to soften the tannins, especially on the finish.

Burghound (90-93)

(from a .45 ha parcel). A more complex nose features notes of poached plum, cassis, black cherry and a whiff of the sauvage. The racy and solidly voluminous and concentrated flavors possess a relatively sleek texture thanks to the finer-grained tannins supported the lingering finale. Very promising. (90-93)/2030+

Serafin Pere et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Le Fonteny 2009 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fontenys is layered with dark cherries, flowers, spices and menthol. This is an especially fleshy, textured Gevrey. The showy personality of the vintage comes through, but there is also plenty of underlying structure and vibrancy. I especially like the intensity of the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

Serafin Pere et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Le Fonteny 2015 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92)

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny reveals pretty aromas of dark cherry, wood smoke and licorice, its oak more integrated than the corresponding Cazetiers. On the palate, the wine is round, full-bodied and ample, less taut and incisive than the Cazetiers and more gourmand, with juicy fruit and supple tannins. This should deliver a great deal of near to mid-term appeal.
