Clos de Sarpe
Chateau Clos de Sarpe is run by the third generation of the Beney family. The vineyard is treated like a small garden with a deep respect for nature. The wine is a style traditional; tannic, intense and seriously concentrated. It requires lots of ageing for St. Emilion, but the reward is in the glass.

Wine Advocate (95)Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Clos de Sarpe (composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc) is a little closed to begin, opening out to reveal provocative Black Forest cake, Chinese five spice and cigar box notes with nuances of sandalwood, kirsch, rose hip tea and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, the palate is oh-so-seductive with a beautiful velvety texture and tons of freshness lifting the decadent fruit to a long spicy finish. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)The 2020 Clos du Sarpe is an exotic beauty. Blackberry jam, graphite, menthol, licorice, crushed rocks, incense and white truffle give Clos du Sarpe its exotic profile. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing, but everything about the 2020 is so alluring. The 2020 needs time to soften, but it is compelling. |

Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)Coming from tiny yields of 35 hectoliters per hectare (and the 100th vintage for the Beyney Family), the 2023 Château Clos De Sarpe is 78% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot raised in 70% new Burgundy barrels. A rich, concentrated wine, it boasts a deep purple hue and delivers powerful aromatics of cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and spicy wood, medium to full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mouthfeel, and beautiful yet building tannins. It picks up more floral and spicy nuances with air and is a beautiful, absolutely classic wine from this château that readers will love. The 2023 hit 14.5% alcohol with an incredibly low pH of 3.35. It’s going to have 50+ years of life. |
