Courbis

From their base in the Northern Rhône village of Châteaubourg, the Courbis brothers have acquired an enviable collection of parcels on south and east facing slopes in the communes of Châteaubourg, Glun and Cornas. This is an ancient family estate, tracing its roots back to the c16th. But since taking over from their father Maurice the brothers have firmly established themselves as leaders of the modern school of winemaking in Saint Joseph and Cornas. The brothers practice sustainable methods, with the grapes harvested by hand, rigorously sorted and 100% de-stemmed. Their aim is to emphasise the specific character of each of the Saint Joseph and Cornas vineyards. They produce some of the most compelling examples of Saint Joseph and Cornas being made today.

Courbis Cornas La Sabarotte 2017 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (94-97)

The 2017 Cornas La Sabarotte is similarly purple-colored and boasts more black fruits, spice, chocolate, and dried soil/earthy notes. It's full-bodied, powerful and rounded, with a terrific sense of balance and purity paired with ample meatiness, density, and classic full-throttle Cornas character. It might just rival the 2016, which is saying something.

Wine Advocate (94-97)

The 2018 Cornas la Sabarotte is a clear favorite at Courbis this year, as it's packed and stacked with lush purple fruit. Full-bodied, plush and creamy, it boasts solid granite underpinnings and a long, dusty finish that leaves behind a powerful impression of crushed stone.

Courbis Cornas Les Eygats 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2016 Cornas les Eygats is aging in 50% new oak and will likely be bottled in March 2018. It’s inky in hue, with enthralling notes of crushed stone and ripe plums on the nose. It’s full-bodied, rich and velvety on the palate yet also fresh, bright and lively. This won’t need much cellaring to round into form; drink from 2020.

Dark purple. Heady, smoke-accented black/blue fruits, licorice, vanilla, peony and olive paste on the intensely perfumed nose. Pliant, sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering appealingly sweet blackberry, cassis and floral pastille flavors that are energized by a core of juicy acidity. Courbis Cornas Les Eygats 2018 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (94-96)

A bigger, richer wine, the 2018 Cornas Les Eygats comes from a pure granite terroir and is currently aging in 50% new French oak. Saturated purple-colored, it has a complex bouquet of leafy herbs, ground pepper, lavender, and iron notes that are balanced nicely by beautiful fruit. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, with ripe tannins, it's another Cornas from this team that does everything right.
