Croix de Labrie
Chateau Croix de Labrie is one of the smallest Grand Cru estates in St. Emilion. One of the last remaining Garage wines from the 1990s (meaning the production is small enough to be aged in the owner’s garage). Michel Rolland and Jean Luc Thunevin are the consultants. The wine is lush, seductive, open and drinks well young.

Medium red. Bright aromas of cherry, blackberry, minerals and chocolatey oak. Fat and fruity, with mineral and tobacco notes complicating the wine's currant and cherry flavors. This offers early accessibility.HK$6,975.00 -

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Croix de Labrie offers scents of wild blueberries, Black Forest cake and kirsch with touches of garrigue and tilled soil plus a waft of stewed tea. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and with a firm frame of grainy tannins, it has a lovely line of freshness taking the opulent fruit to a long finish.HK$4,675.00 -

This estate continues to fire on all cylinders, and their 2017 Chateau Croix De Labrie is stunning stuff. Loaded with notions of creme de cassis, graphite, crushed violets, chocolate, and a kiss of classic Saint-Emilion minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, polished tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great finish. It's another killer wine from this tiny, family-run estate that readers should snatch up. I suspect it will be even better with 2-4 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades.HK$5,995.00 -

The 2018 Croix de Labrie has really come together beautifully over the last two years. Inky and layered in the glass, the 2018 possesses striking depth and tons of character. Sweet floral and spice aromas lift a core of inky dark red fruit. Mocha, spice, lavender and blood orange appear later, adding further shades of complexity. A wine of tremendous harmony and class, Croix de Labrie is impressive, to say the least.HK$2,415.00 -

(6x150cl) 2019Jeb Dunnuck (96)
The 2019 Château Croix De Labrie is gorgeous and jumps out in the vintage. Almost all Merlot brought up in new barrels, it offers a beautiful bouquet of red and black currants, spicy oak, dried herbs, and flowers, with a beautiful loamy earth and chalky minerality emerging with time in the glass. With remarkable purity and finesse, it's full-bodied, has a great mid-palate, silky tannins, and a great finish. It could be drunk today with a decant but will ideally be given 4-5 years of bottle age. I suspect it will have 20-25 years of overall longevity.HK$6,785.00 -

(12x75cl) 2020James Suckling (98-99)
The focus and texture of this wine is really something. It’s totally transparent with blackberries, blueberries, earth, stone and mushrooms. Flowers too. Full-bodied with firm tannins that give super form and length to this. Freshness. Almost all merlot with a tiny dash of cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. Perhaps the best ever? Certainly at the same level as the 2019. About 14,000 bottles made.HK$8,080.00 -

So much cool blue fruit and flowers here with minerals and subtle clove notes. Black licorice and black pepper, too. Medium body with very fine yet firm tannins. Focused and linear. Vibrant. The energy keeps going. 87% merlot, 8% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. From biodynamically grown grapes.HK$3,895.00 -
(1x75cl) 2022James Suckling (99)
What a fabulous young wine from this tiny vineyard of four hectares. Aromas of black cherries, graphite, flint and brambleberries. Hints of fresh herbs such as bay leaves. The palate is medium-bodied, showing a fantastic depth of fruit and racy tannins. The purity and complexity are exceptional. A very minerally, vineyard-driven wine with an abundance of character and subtle power. 84% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon, and 6% cabernet franc. Best after 2029 but hard to resist.HK$1,090.00 -
James Suckling (97-98)
This is very unique and spicy, with white pepper, salt, iodine and oyster shell. Blackberry and black licorice, too. Medium to full body with great freshness, but it’s very structured with fine and chewy tannins, before finishing fresh and energetic. Crunchy. 3.41 pH and 14.2% alcohol. 85% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. All biodynamically grown grapes. Better than 2022?HK$3,950.00 -
