    About Château des Quarts

    Created in 2012 by two of Burgundy’s most respected vignerons, Dominique Lafon and Olivier Merlin, Château des Quarts is quickly emerging as one of the greatest estates in the Mâconnais.

     

    Olivier Merlin's relationship with this outstanding site, one of a select number of vineyards granted Premier Cru status from the 2020 vintage onwards, dates back further than his outright acquisition of it alongside his old friend Dominique Lafon. In 2003, Merlin began to secure fruit from the Clos des Quarts each vintage, making the wine under his own label. Recognised immediately for its beautiful quality, this was consistently one of the top wines crafted by this masterful vigneron. 

     

    Upon learning that the beautiful Mâconnais property was for sale, Merlin had no hesitation in quickly approaching Dominique Lafon, a producer of equal repute, to form a truly formidable partnership. Drawing on their shared expertise and legendary savoir-faire, these two vignerons knew that this wonderful terroir could produce wine to convey the essence of great Pouilly-Fuissé. In 2012, Château des Quarts was born with the wine made in Merlin's facility at La Roche Vineuse, the exact winery where he had been vinifying his purchased grapes from this site for close to a decade.

     

    The Vineyards and the Winemaking

    The vineyard, Clos des Quarts, is located in Chaintré, the southernmost village of Pouilly-Fuissé. This monopole (entirely owned by the pair) vineyard consists of 2.23 hectares surrounded by a high stone wall, overlooking the Saône valley. The oldest vines are over 100 years old, having been planted in 1917. They face east on a gentle slope comprising clay-limestone soil which is free-draining, making it ideal terroir for exquisitely perfumed, concentrated and refined fruit. 

     

    Merlin's team are rigorous in their viticulture, working hard to preserve and remain respectful to the site's unique centuries-old heritage. The grapes are vinified by both Olivier and Dominique in Merlin's cellars at La Roche-Vineuse, with fermentation and ageing taking place in classic Burgundian barrels, a small percentage of which are new. From the very first vintage, this has been a reference point for Pouilly-Fuissé - critics are in agreement that these wines are ethereal and true to their sense of place and terroir.
