Descendientes de Jose Palacios Faraona 2013 (1x150cl) Wine Advocate (98)If 2012 was a short vintage, the yields for the 2013 La Faraona were little short of catastrophic. The nose was explosive, with aromas of gunpowder (pun intended!) and black pepper, orange peel, aniseed, fennel and aromatic herbs, wild berries and a fine, almost chalky minerality. But if the nose is captivating, it's in the palate where the wine shows greatness - austere, long, elastic, mineral, focused, with laser-like definition and superb length. Somehow it made me think of a Cabernet Franc from the Loire. I have to say that this is the first time I have seen real greatness in La Faraona, and in 2013 it's the best wine from Descendientes. Only 432 bottles and seven magnums were produced, the shortest vintage ever.

2010 |
Descendientes de Jose Palacios Las Lamas 2010 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (93)The 2010 Las Lamas follows the same pattern as the 2010 Corullon. With high pitched fruit, it is a rather austere, restrained, and less immediate wine with some blood and iron notes as well as saline acidity. It shows extreme balance, dancing on the edge of the razor. If the 2011 is a party, this is rather serious. Drink 2016-2027.

2012 |
Descendientes de Jose Palacios Las Lamas 2012 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)Without a doubt the 2012 Las Lamas is the star of the vintage, and I'm talking not about the winery only, but about the whole of the Bierzo! If all the 2012 wines here are flowery and perfumed, Las Lamas has aromas of white flowers rather than violets, the citric notes are finer, like blood orange zest. Ricardo feels Las Lamas was picked in exactly the correct day, because Mencía is a very sensitive grape, and if you pick it one day too late or one day too early you get over ripeness or green, vegetal aromas. He talks about wild rose and quince, and I also get some soil, earthy, Gevrey-like. I think they really hit the bull's eye in 2012. The palate shows prodigious balance and harmony, like a tightrope walker moving steadily across the line, it dances on your tongue with the lightness and elegance of a ballerina. Ethereal, without being light. There are 2,500 bottles of this prodigious Bierzo. For this quality the price is really good.

Descendientes de Jose Palacios Las Lamas 2013 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)The 2013 Las Lamas follows the path of the superb 2012, as in the cooler years this warmer vineyard behaves well and has maybe a little more margin for harvesting, while in a warmer vintage the harvest window is quite short. This feels a little like a hypothetical blend of Corullón and Moncerbal, with the consistency of the Corullón and the perfume and minerality of the Moncerbal. It always has an exuberant touch that sometimes makes me think of malt intermixed with some violets. This is both powerful and light. 2,456 bottles produced.

2015 |
Descendientes de Jose Palacios Las Lamas 2015 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (96+)Curiously enough, the 2015 Las Lamas felt more focused and defined than the 2014, despite having been a warmer year. It sometimes seems like the warmer, southern exposure of the vineyard really shines in warmer years, when in principle, it should be the other way around. I even found notes of blood orange here, which I tend to associate with cooler vintages and northern exposures. But in any case, this 2015 is truly exceptional. It took some time to open up in the glass, so if you pull the cork anytime soon, decant it in advance, but I'm sure the best for this 2015 is yet to come. 3,649 bottles and some other formats were filled in March 2017.

2020 |
Descendientes de Jose Palacios Las Lamas 2020 (3x75cl) Wine Advocate (97+)This is always the ripest of the wines, and in 2020 it's no exception: the 2020 Las Lamas is 14.5% alcohol. But what's important is that it doesn't show—it doesn't feel ripe or warm. In fact, this feels fresher and more harmonious and lively than the Moncerbal; it DOES need ripeness. It's very expressive and very Lamas, more Mediterranean and really what it is. It's juicy and peachy, very velvety, with round and glossy tannins but without being heavy. It's very balanced and shows a certain freshness, but it's a rich wine. It's now certified organic. 6,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2021 in a break from the long 2021 harvest.

2012 |
Descendientes de Jose Palacios Moncerbal 2012 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)The 2012 Moncerbal is the stonier, more extreme vineyard that in 2012 somehow feels a little riper. It has aromas of plums and red cherries, a soil, organic touch, no traces of oak - as is the case with all the wines here. The oak is perfectly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, there is more depth than Corullón but this Moncerbal is also more austere and closed, slightly more tannic, perhaps the ripest of the 2012s together with la Faraona. I would wait on this one. Around 1,800 bottles were produced.

Descendientes de Jose Palacios Moncerbal 2013 (6x75cl) Vinous (94)Saturated ruby. Expansive aromas of fresh red and dark berries, Asian spices, incense and woodsmoke, with a mineral nuance emerging with aeration. Juicy, seamless and focused on the palate, offering gently sweet raspberry, boysenberry and rose pastille flavors that deepen and spread out on the back half. Shows excellent concentration but comes off as graceful and precise, finishing with superb thrust and repeating floral character; silky tannins add grip.

2018 |
Descendientes de Jose Palacios Moncerbal 2018 (3x75cl) 2018 Moncerbal is exceptionally fragrant with near crystalline purity. It is a fine, elegant, dancing wine with extremely subtle black berry and black cherry fruit coming through. Its incredible freshness cuts like a knife through the palate which is mineral beyond belief, and the length goes on forever. If you are ever lucky enough to visit this astonishing 1.5ha vineyard, you will see how the vines cling, unbelievably, to vertiginous slopes. That determination somehow comes through in the precision and focus of this stunning 2018 wine. It is exceptional. Drink 2024-2035.

2019 |
Descendientes de Jose Palacios Moncerbal 2019 (12x37.5cl) Wine Advocate (98)The 2019 Moncerbal is a "vino de paraje," produced with grapes (mostly Mencía but also 4% white grapes) from different plots that totaled 1.51 hectares in the same zone of the village of Corullón. It fermented with some full clusters and indigenous yeasts in oak vats for 46 days and matured in oak barrels and foudres for 11 months. It's one of the lower-alcohol wines (together with the Corullón) at 13.5% alcohol. This is super aromatic and floral, with notes of violets and also white flowers and even a citrus touch. This is the showier wine of the 2019s—textured, long and gentle, with a great finish. It has changing aromas and flavors, mixing flowers, herbs, berries, earth and even a lactic touch sometimes. It should develop further complexity in bottle. This is a great vintage for Moncerbal, keeping the freshness and poise of the 2018 in a warmer year. They use less and less new oak barrels, contrary to what they thought they'd need with the new winery. 3,488 bottles, 101 magnums and some larger formats were produced in 2019.

2019 |
Descendientes de Jose Palacios Villa de Corullon 2019 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (96)Following the new classification of wines, the 2019 Villa de Corullón is a Vino de Villa (village), produced with grapes from 6.71 hectares divided into 200 small plots they own on slate-rich soils at 500 to 950 meters in altitude. It's 91% Mencía, 1% Alicante Bouschet and 8% white grapes from old vines (50 to 90 years old) that are organically and biodynamically farmed, and the wine will be certified in the coming years. The partly destemmed grapes fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts for 43 days and matured in barriques and foudres for 10 months. It has a "moderate" 13.5% alcohol, the lower part of the range, as they aim for 13.5% to 14% alcohol in the finished wines. This is a great blending exercise, as the wines are blended mostly before putting it in barrel. It's a subtle and elegant Corullón, with great balance and freshness; Ricardo talked about some tannins that are very fine. It's a fluid vintage for this bottling, a little herbal, versatile and complex. It seems to have more character than the Moncerbal than it has had in other years. This could be one of the lightest and most elegant vintages of Corullón, with a different texture from the rest of the 2019s. There were 20,344 bottles and some other formats produced.

2020 |
Descendientes de Jose Palacios Villa de Corullon 2020 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)I was blown away by the 2020 wines in barrel in June 2021 and found the 2020 Villa de Corullón very ready, open, expressive, floral and ethereal. It destroyed the idea I had of a warm and ripe 2020. Ricardo Pérez Palacios told me he was thinking of bottling the 2020s earlier, as they didn't need a long élevage, just nine or 10 months in barrel. The wine is pale, the palest Corullón ever, with 13.7% alcohol—perhaps the vines got blocked and didn't develop more color compounds or sugar. The wine makes me think of a red from Jura; it has a different profile and is more delicate, ethereal and full of light and energy. Pérez, who hates comparisons with other regions, couldn't stop saying that it felt like a Morey Saint Denis! It's all flowers and red fruit, with a lot of super fine tannins (the 2019 tannins are rougher) that are round and give it a velvety texture with no rusticity—elegant and balanced. There is a nice balance between tannin and acidity, something this has in common with the 2019, which makes the vintages quite unusual, because being warm, the wines show balance. Today, it feels more like Moncerbal than the Moncerbal bottling; nevertheless, Corullón is around 40% from Moncerbal. ... It has to be my favorite Corullón to date. 22,183 bottles and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in October 2021.

Descendientes Jose Palacios Bierzo Villa Corullon 2013 (6x75cl) Vinous (92)Vivid ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes black raspberry, candied lavender and incense, with a hint of Asian spices in the background. Lively, deep, expansive red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors are given back-end lift by a building mineral quality. HK$2,820.00
|
2018 |
Descendientes Jose Palacios Petalos 2018 (12x75cl) Wine Advocate (93+)Their regional wine achieves unheard of levels of complexity and nuance with the 2018 Pétalos del Bierzo. It's a blend from over 90 hectares of vineyards in different part of Bierzo, 20% of the grapes from their own vineyards in Corullón, including some 4% white grapes. The rest is purchased from 180+ families with whom they have a long-term relationship. Some of these vineyards are not yet certified organic, but the objective is to achieve it in the next five years. It's mostly Mencía, but there are other grapes varieties in the vineyards; they estimate about 3% of other reds, Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne, Negreda, etc. and around 4% whites, Valenciana, Jerez and Godello, half from Corullón and the other half from other villages. The grapes were partly destemmed and fermented in open-top stainless steel and oak vats with 25 days of maceration where the wine underwent a slow three-month malolactic. It matured in barrel for 12 months. This is the wine that showcases the house style and the character of the vintage, which, in this case, is delicate and very much from the zone. There is an aromatic purity and elegance that is very captivating with a faint flinty background, the cherry essence (Mediterranean) and a touch of fern (Atlantic) plus a honeyed twist that shows up after a couple of hours in the glass. It has a silky texture, soft and caressing, with very fine tannins and the faint bitter twist in the finish. In an ideal world, this should be the first wine people drink from Bierzo, and fortunately, in many cases, it is, given the availability, even if they did a more severe selection. This is approachable now but would be better in one year, and it's going to live in bottle. 282,038 bottles and 2,500 magnums produced. It was bottled between December 2019 and January 2020.
