    Domaine de la Charbonniere

A small family-run domaine that began in 1912, it is now into their fourth generation of the passionate and dedicated Maret Family. With 28 hectares of vines they make four consistently sublime, traditional, top-quality Châteauneuf-du-Pape; rich and ripe, while maintaining excellent acidity and freshness, courtesy of their judicious vineyard management. The quality of the domaine has been steadily on the rise for many years now. Fortunately, the prices have not yet followed!

I loved the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape from this brilliant team, and it should be snatched up by readers looking for a classic, impeccably made Châteauneuf du Pape to drink over the coming decade or more. Ripe black cherries, blackberries, Provençal garrigue, pepper, and Southern France street market-like nuances all emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, elegant texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. Don't miss it. The blend is 70% Grenache and 15% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre.

Domaine de la Charbonniere Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Hautes Brusquieres 2015 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

Coming all from the Brusquières lieu-dit located in the northern part of the appellation, the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Hautes Brusquières was surprisingly open knit and forward on this occasion, with medium to full-bodied richness, notes of kirsch, blackberries, dried herbs and spice, soft tannin and solid length. The blend is 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, and it’s raised in demi-muids and oak tanks. It’s clearly an outstanding wine, and reminds me of the more forward and sexy 2012.

    Wine Advocate (96-98)

A prodigious effort, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hautes Brusquieres Cuvee Speciale was yet to be bottled during my June visit. It offers up sweet floral aromas, hints of thyme and rosemary and bold cherry fruit. Full-bodied and creamy-velvety in texture, it's a hugely seductive mouthful of wine that I found difficult to spit. If it emerges from the bottling process looking like this, buyers will have huge smiles on their faces.

Superbly concentrated, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hautes Brusquieres Cuvee Speciale takes floral and tea-like complexities and layers them delicately over crisp raspberries and stone fruits. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, it's full-bodied, velvety and long, with an attractive briny note on the finish.

    Jeb Dunnuck (97)

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Les Hautes Brusquières (60/40 Grenache and Syrah) comes from a cooler terroir near the Mount Redon plateau and was brought up in oak tronconique tanks and demi-muids. Its dense purple, almost opaque hue is followed by a brilliant perfume of mulled red and black fruits, peppery herbs, crushed stone, violets, and licorice. With full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, and just about perfect tannins, it's another superstar wine from this estate that's up with the finest vintages to date.

    Wine Advocate (92)

On this day, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Mourre des Perdrix, off sandier soils, wasn't any more impressive than the regular cuvée. Marked by stone fruit and cherries, this medium to full-bodied wine isn't particularly rich or concentrated, just very pretty in a more delicate style.

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Mourre des Perdrix was scheduled to be bottled two days after my visit, so the sample was drawn from the final blend. Although I expect it will close down a bit after bottling, it was singing when I tasted it, featuring red raspberries and cherries, floral and spice notes and a plump, velvety texture. Just delicious stuff.

Richer and more deeply textured than the other cuvées from Charbonnière, 90% of the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes comes from 70- to 100-year-old Grenache vines in La Crau, supplemented by 10% Mourvèdre off 45-year-old vines. It has the same estate signature of red cherries and stone fruit, with just hints of spice on the long, velvety finish.

Domaine de la Charbonniere Chateauneuf-du-Pape VV 2016 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (97-99)

Brought up in new demi-muids, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre (the Mourvèdre is from the Cristia lieu-dit). Unquestionably the greatest vintage of this cuvée ever made, this crazy good 2016 knocks it out of the park with its huge nose of currants, seaweed, incense, garrigue, and chocolate. Just a massive, deep, powerful wine, with sweet tannin and remarkable purity, it’s going to flirt with perfection and keep for 20-25 years. Bravo to the Maret family as well as consultant Philippe Cambie!

    Wine Advocate (96-98+)

Verging on surmaturité, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes turns the volume up to 11, yet I couldn't help but be captivated by its nuance at the same time. Immensely concentrated raspberries, cherries and a hint of dark chocolate emerge on the nose of this blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, joined by hints of Asian five spice and salted licorice. From the lieux-dits of la Crau (sud) and Cristia, it's full-bodied and hugely powerful (16% alcohol), yet it retains a sense of freshness and elegance on the long, silky-textured finish. Wow!

    Jeb Dunnuck (94-96+)

The quality of the Cuvée Vieilles Vignes has soared over the past 4-5 years, and while older vintages has a touch of austerity and rusticity, new releases show more balance, polished tannins, and finesse, while still showing classic old vine Grenache power. The 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes (90/10 Grenache and Mourvèdre) boasts a deep purple color to go with full-bodied richness, building tannins, lots of cassis and black raspberry fruit, and complex notes of garrigue, pepper, and violets. I’d put this up with the top wines in the vintage.

Domaine de la Charbonniere Vacqueyras Cuvee Speciale 2016 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (93-95)

A real head turner is the 2016 Vacqueyras Cuvée Spéciale and this knockout barrel sample is made from 100% Grenache, mostly destemmed, and brought up in oak tanks. Strawberries, blackberry jam, incense, floral nuances and spice aromas and flavors literally soar from the glass of this sensational wine, and it’s full-bodied, opulent and hedonistic. It’s one of the finest Vacqueyras out there in 2016.
