Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

About Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (aka DRC) is an iconic producer – and has maintained this position for many decades. DRC has a fascinating and lengthy history spanning the ownership of its namesake vineyard by the Bourbon Prince of Conti, through the French Revolution to the current owner of the de Villaine and Leroy/Roch families. Managing 25 hectares of exclusively Grand Cru vineyards, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the sole Burgundian estate to bottle nothing other than the pinnacle of the region’s classification system.

Chief amongst all Burgundy producers to claim holdings in most of the magical terroir in Vosne-Romanée, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is famously hailed as the King of Vosne-Romanée. Possessing only the best vineyard in the region, two of their most sought after red wines being Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, both of which are monopole holdings and frequently amongst the best offerings in Burgundy.

Apart from Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, DRC also produces four other Grand Cru wines from Vosne-Romanée at ultra-limited quantity each year: Romanée St-Vivant Grand Cru (approx. 1,500 cases/year), Richebourg Grand Cru (approx. 1,000 cases/year), Échezeaux Grand Cru (approx. 1,340 cases/year) and Grand Échezeau Grand Cru (approx. 1,150 cases/year).

The style of the DRC wines is rich, intense, silky, transparent and quite light on the aromatic palate with more red than dark nuances. The use of whole clusters gives a very rich aromatic profile, and a very high complexity as the wine ages. All the wines are very reflective of the terroir, and the difference in terroir is very clear even when the wines are very young and powerful. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti normally use 100% new oak on the wines.

Wine Advocate (90)

The Echezeaux is one of the best examples of this wine the domaine has made recently. Deep in color (darker actually than the 1985), this wine has an exotic, intense bouquet of plums, oriental spices, oak, and berry fruit. It is, as one would expect, the most forward of their wines, but I would still not opt for opening it until 1993-1994. This is among the few superstars of this vintage, but the 1986 is not for drinking soon-patience is most definitely required.

Firm, tight and intense, with rich, sharply focused flavors that are smooth and lively. A tasty core of black cherry, plum and currant notes is shaded by smoky, cedary oak nuances. Balanced, firmly tannic and drinkable now, but almost sure to improve thr 1,700 cases made. -

While I had tasted this many times shortly after release, I hadn't had the chance to see it again since 2008 so it was nice to update my acquaintance. Though subtle, there is still a touch off oak framing the ripe and penetrating red and blackberry fruits and oriental spice aromas comprising the nose. There is outstanding power to the beautifully detailed and quite robust flavors that deliver excellent precision and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced finale. This is a big wine with richness, superb length and impressive refinement and it's clear that this will live for decades. In sum, this is very classy juice with plenty of upside development potential remaining.

Unquestionably the finest Echezeaux I have encountered from this famed estate, the 2003 explodes from the glass with candied raspberries, violet, and red cherries. Stunningly marrying elegance with richness and density, this medium to full-bodied wine is ample, pure, and velvety-textured. Loads of sweet red fruits are found in its persistent, sensual character. Drink it over the next 12-14 years.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 1990 (1x75cl)

Thought to have been founded in the 12th Century by Cistercian monks, the minuscule size of Grands Échézeaux sees far less variation and fragmentation in its soils and climates than in larger Grands Crus in the appellation. Essentially, there is a typicity to this vineyard that allows its wines to convey the breathtaking character of the entire plot, in a way the larger Échézeaux may struggle.

In other words, to drink Grands Échézeaux is to know Grands Échézeaux. This is the superpower of Pinot Noir when nurtured and crafted by true masters - the ability to convey the essence of time and place suspended in a sublime liquid. The transparency of this wine simply must be tasted to be believed. A bottle of Grands Échézeaux from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti speaks to its drinkers in a language which neither knows nor requires any words - it is an understanding between man and nature as ancient as the soils of this hallowed cru.

This uniqueness is, as with all of the very greatest wines, impossible to entirely convey with words. In youth, Grands Échézeaux can be anything but easy to love. Often unforthcoming and almost ill-tempered, one could be forgiven for not realising just what rapturous beauty is certain to emerge with age. Described as having a "protective shell" in youth, Grands Échézeaux inevitably sheds its shyness to glide forth from the bottle with alluring aromatics and impossibly fine structure. An altogether more subtle creature than either its namesake Échézeaux or its neighbour Clos de Vougeot, this is very serious wine indeed that needs absolutely no reassurance of its own class and pedigree.

Complex, its violet, licorice, dried herbs and wild raspberry character mingling with mocha, spice and oak accents. Like all '94 DRC reds, it seems at first sip a touch unripe, with green tannins on the lingering finish. But it grows fatter and more harmonious in the glass, so should improve with age. The 2005 Grands-Echezeaux displays an utterly different, less charming personality than its “little” sibling. Fresh black raspberry and black cherry hover between sorbet-like and faintly-caramelized manifestations. The palate is obviously dense, with considerable grip and ultra-fine tannins, incipient silkiness, but not the creaminess of the Echezeaux. Fresh berry, faintly tart fruit skin, and nut oils inform an uncannily kinetic finish that makes one’s mouth quiver.

Tasted at the La Tâche vertical at The Square. The La Tâche 1990 sports a deep garnet core with brick rim. The palate is obviously from a relatively warm Burgundy vintage and delivers a surfeit of ripe, juicy and powerful red fruit infused with black truffle, leather and mint, with time a touch of rose petals. It gains more and more delineation with time, though never quite achieves the clinical precision of the 1991. The palate is full-bodied and for La Tâche, quite sinewy with layers of intense, rounded, svelte red berry fruit with just a touch of piquancy. It has an enormous structure and undeniable presence, yet this bottle could not hold a torch to either the 1991 or the 1999 La Tâche. Aubert de Villaine himself commented that he prefers the 1991 La Tâche to the 1990 and I concur. This is a great La Tâche but now with 25-years on the clock, one wonders whether it is past its peak?

As it was from cask this is more restrained than usual and it requires aggressive swirling to coax the pure and spicy essence of red berry fruit aromas to emerge from the glass where there is a slight hint of herbal tea present. There is a similar reserve to the distinctly focused and linear flavors that enjoy a seemingly unlimited reserve of dry extract that renders the fine-grained and silky tannins almost invisible at present though I suspect that they will become much more apparent once the baby fat melts away. There is superb complexity and fantastic length and this mineral-driven effort should be capable of drinking well after only 12 years or so of bottle age but require a solid 20 before it's completely mature. While La Tâche is almost by definition a superbly elegant wine there is also always an inner core of muscle. In 2011 it seems to have more of the former and a bit less of the latter, indeed this may the first vintage in quite a while where it is ready before the Richebourg.

More reserved than the Richebourg and Romanée-St-Vivant, the 2016 La Tâche Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of wild berries, licorice, rose petal, smoked duck and love, framed by a touch of cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and velvety, with a deep, concentrated but tight-knit core, its firm chassis of fine-grained, structuring tannins cloaked in succulent fruit, underpinned by juicy acids. The finish is long and reverberative. This is a stunning La Tâche in the making, but it is also one of the more reticent wines in the range and will demand some bottle age.

The 1971 Richebourg Grand Cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was poured from magnum. It had a powerful, almost burly bouquet as you would expect from this vineyard—perhaps autumnal, brown leaves and a cold Sunday afternoon, touches of Earl Grey infused the dark berry fruit (darker than the 1971 Grands Echézeaux tasted alongside incidentally). The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, hints of dried orange peel infusing the black and red fruit, all with impressive energy considering that this is now the same age as yours truly. Perhaps I found more breeding on the aforementioned Grands Echézeaux, and yet this is still a gorgeous mature Burgundy that will continue to give immense pleasure over the next decade for those privileged with the experience. Tasted November 2016.

From a cold Burgundian cellar, the 1972 Richebourg Grand Cru from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti put in a very creditable showing in this vintage, especially as the 1970s were not particularly distinguished years at the Domaine. Aromas of macerated red fruits, dried rose petal, raw cocoa and savory bass notes precede a medium-full wine with melted tannins, a glossy core of cool fruit, tangy acids and a sapid, saline finish. In this era, DRC bottled barrel-by-barrel, and I’m guessing this bottle hailed from one of the good ones.

Oh yes. Oh yes, yes, yes. This 1999 Richebourg Grand Cru is a bit like a great athlete, one who really shows its class against stiff opposition, here in the form of 18 other Richebourg! It follows the same thread as the imperial 1999 La Tâche. It has been blessed with a sensational nose that boasts quite astonishing delineation and precision, fabulous mineralité. The aromatics are far more detailed and enthralling than the 2007 tasted alongside. The palate is beautifully structured, virtually symmetrical with filigree tannin, with a gentle crescendo in the mouth towards an effervescent finish with hints of orange peel. Simply effortless.
