    De Montille

Domaine de Montille in the Cote de Beaune was developed by Hubert de Montille in 1951. His family have aristocratic roots in the region’s land since the 17th century. Now run by his son, Etienne, they use traditional wine making techniques to produce pure elegant Burgundy that generally requires five years bottle ageing.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2013 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (91)

Bright, dark red. Much riper on the nose than the Beaune Grèves but still with a medicinal aspect to the complex aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and flint. Plush, dense, savory wine with excellent purity and lift, conveying strong mineral cut to the raspberry and redcurrant flavors. There's something Vosne-like in this wine's salinity. The slatey finish features suave, well-integrated tannins; really glistens and rises on the aftertaste. This has turned out very well.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2014 (3x150cl)

      Vinous (90+)

(100% vendange entier; 35% new oak): Good medium red. Subdued aromas and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, earth and smoky minerality accented by hints of pepper and herbs from the stems. Broad, ripe and smooth but quite dry. Displays very good spicy energy, length and lift but the substantial dusty tannins leave the finish a bit clenched today. This slightly edgy wine will need patience.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2017 (12x75cl)

      Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru, 100% whole clusters, has an outstanding bouquet with complex raspberry, wild strawberry and crushed stone aromas - all very engaging and sophisticated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, plenty of red fruit here, tightening up towards quite a structured and backward finish. It deserves several years in bottle but it should turn out a fine Taillepieds (like the 1985 recently tasted.)

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2018 (12x75cl)

      Vinous (91)

The 2018 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru is better on the nose than its peers. Lifted blackberry, raspberry and sous-bois aromas become more floral with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit and some stem addition that does not quite assimilate towards the finish, as if there are two Volnays competing in the same glass. That might resolve itself with time in bottle… we will see. Still an intriguing proposition. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

    • De Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2021 (12x75cl)

      Burghound (91-94)

Here too the reduction is enough to mask everything but a subtle floral nuance. The gorgeously refined and pungently mineral-driven middleweight flavors culminate in a chalky, long, balanced and classically austere finale. Textbook Taillepieds.

    • De Montille Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2018 (3x75cl)

      Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru contains two-thirds whole cluster and is matured in 50% new oak. It has a well-defined bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and pressed rose petal scents, plus just a hint of black truffle in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. A gentle, lilting Les Malconsorts with a pliant, lightly spiced finish. Maybe other vintages have displayed a little more density on the finish, but this remains a lovely premier cru.

    • De Montille Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2019 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is 100% whole cluster and includes young vines. It has a very intense bouquet of red and blue fruit infused with rose petal and violet, touches of clove and blood orange developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit on the entry, quite detailed and structured, and blueberry and blackberry toward the finish. It needs to finish its élevage to fully cohere. Very fine persistence on the aftertaste. Excellent.

    • De Montille Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2020 (3x75cl)

      Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is two-thirds whole cluster. It has a well-defined, quite tertiary bouquet, the whole bunch quite expressive at the moment, imparting light black pepper and clove aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Good density here, grippy and quite concentrated towards the finish. Just a touch of black pepper emerges on the aftertaste. Serious and very complex. Closure: Diam

      Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a harmonious bouquet with red berry fruit, sous-bois, thyme and touches of dried rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, crisp with tea leaf and bay leaf, building gently towards a composed, quasi-Morey-Saint-Denis finish. The pedigree of the terroir really defines this wine, even in a tough vintage like this.

    • De Montille Vosne-Romanee 1er Les Malconsorts Cuvee Christiane 2011 (1x150cl)

      Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)

(100% vendange entier; 40% new oak): Good deep red. Much more backward and medicinal on the nose than the regular Malconsorts, offering scents of menthol, mint, licorice, violet and black pepper lifted by a piquant whiff of orange peel. Then brooding and dominated by its structure in the mouth, offer blueberry and blackberry flavors lifted by blood orange. Terrific cut and energy here, and even suaver than the previous wine. Finishes very spicy and impressively long, with serious fine-grained tannins starting drier than those of the Malconsorts but gaining sweetness as the wine opens in the glass. Both this wine and the first Malconsorts got a cold soak that lasted for five days. They were harvested on the same day, vinified entirely with their stems, and aged in the same percentage of new oak. The only difference is the location of the vines: The Cristiane comes from an enclave that on the map appears to be more La Tache than Malconsorts.

      Vinous (95-97)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru is 80% whole cluster, very different in aromatic profile to the regular cuvée, more ferrous with hints of red pepper infusing the red and black fruit. The palate is very well-defined and comparing side-by-side, this conveys more energy and tension than the regular cuvée, almost with greater precision towards the finish. Very long and tender, this is a marvellous Vosne-Romanée for long-term ageing. Closure: Diam

      Vinous (93-95)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts Cuvée Christiane 1er Cru has two-thirds whole cluster, a little more than the regular cuvée, malo not completed until August 2022. The bouquet is fresh on the entry with fine acidity; there's more detail and nuance here. The 2021 is beautifully balanced and quite granular towards the finish, full of tension with a long tail on the finish. Sublime.
