Comtes Lafon
Domaine des Comtes Lafon began in 1869 with vines in some of the best plots in Mersualt, Volnay and Le Montrachet. This family estate has been run by Dominique Lafon since 1985. He ended share cropping, key to their surging quality, with some of the best white and great red wine. Their cellars are the deepest in Burgundy.

Bottled in May 2021, the 2019 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with white peach, honeysuckle and just a very slight touch of baked bread. The palate is well balanced with a slightly creamy opening, fine acidity, with hints of almond and white chocolate towards the finish. Quite generous, though I am just seeking a little more tension. The 2020 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru has a very pure with honeysuckle, orange zest and walnut, gaining intensity with time. This is a multi-dimensional nose, kaleidoscopic. The palate is well balanced with an almost Corton-Charlemagne-like entry, a little more austere compared to previous vintage with a lightly spiced finish. Very fine, quite intellectual, this is a scintillating, almost audacious Meursault-Charmes that has the edge over the Perrières (a view concurred by the man who made it!) Perfumed aromas of hazelnut, lime and spice. Rich but racy and stylish; youthful and minerally. Rather elegantly styled wine, quite precise for the vintage. Very long on the finish. Lafon now uses just 50% new oak for his Genevrieres; as recently as 1992, this was made in all new barrels.HK$4,620.00 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)
From young vines: Aromas of lemon oil and vanilla. Sweet flavor of orange oil. Nicely bright but shows only moderate depth. Finishes persistent if a bit skinny. From old vines: Pure aromas of orange and stone. Wonderfully intense and perfumed in the mouth; at once broad and juicy, with terrific fruit. Finishes with excellent thrust and superb length. There's a big difference between these two lots, but the final blend should be excellent.HK$15,375.00 -

(bottled in early April) Bright pale yellow. Orange blossom and crushed stone on the high-pitched, very pure nose. Supple, silky and highly perfumed, with bright acids lifting the orange peel, orange oil and spice flavors. Nothing heavy about this baby. A lovely Genevrieres with cut and lift.HK$23,005.00 -

The 2020 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru has a vibrant, menthol-tinged bouquet that bursts from the glass, touches of quince and yellow plum coming through with time. The palate is very well balanced with orange zest and tangerine, very harmonious and poised with a hint of apricot towards the finish. Delicious, exuberant and punchy. Bottled under Diam 30. Sweet Spot Outstanding. Hints of spice and petrol add breadth to the ripe and mildly exotic aromas of white peach, mandarin orange and discreet wood influence. The bigger and richer medium weight plus flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while displaying excellent depth and drive on the focused and powerful finish. Impressive.HK$10,700.00 -

The 2019 Meursault Goutte d'Or 1er Cru has plenty of freshness on the nose, the scents of crushed stone, mirabelle, Japanese yuzu and blood orange all beautifully defined. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, delivering impressive weight toward the finish. Just missing a little length on the aftertaste, perchance, but it remains very fine.HK$41,520.00 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2020 Meursault Goutte d'Or 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with fine delineation, orange pith and apricot, hazelnut with a touch of flint. The palate is beautifully balanced with insistent grip on the entry, more saline than the Bouchères, fine delineation with great precision on the finish. Very...complete. (a tank sample, fined ten days ago) Knockout nose combines musky citrus peel, white flowers and grilled nuts. Offers bracing lemon, lime and stone flavors of outstanding purity, with strong minerality giving the wine uncanny energy and cut. The sugar/acid balance here is exhilarating, and the wine's resounding finish offers an almost magically light touch. This should age very slowly.HK$14,220.00 -
Vinous (97)
The 2010 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru is one of Dominique Lafon's finest offerings from this noble vineyard in recent years, echoing Stephen Tanzer's finding from his vertical in 2019. It has an electrifying bouquet with such intense mineralité that it threatens to overwhelm the senses. The palate is beautifully balanced with a killer line of acidity, just a twist of bitter lemon lending tension, and a judicious touch of creaminess on the detailed finish. Ludicrously brilliant.HK$10,125.00 -
Vinous (96)
The 2017 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru showed some reduction on the nose, but there is impressive delineation and focus and real mineralité here. It just needs bottle age. The palate is very well balanced, a live wire of acidity, tensile and mineral-driven with a judicious touch of spice toward the persistent finish. This is very classy and persistent, translating the terroir with style, a wine that flirts with profundity. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.HK$16,385.00 -
Vinous (96-98)
The 2018 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru rivets you to the spot with crushed pebble and crushed limestone scents that could only really originate from this vineyard. Such intensity! The beautifully balanced palate delivers a fabulous line of acidity, notes of orange zest and white peach and a stunning crescendo toward the finish, which shows amazing persistence. A Les Perrières with class. Brilliant.HK$15,375.00 -

The 2020 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has quite a rich bouquet with tropical tones, maybe to the detriment of the mineralité that is slightly masked at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, quite saline, lightly spiced with a vibrant finish that finally delivers the spiciness. Maybe pipped by the Les Charmes this year, this is a classy but not peak Perrières. Bottled under Diam 30. Closure: Diam 30HK$6,960.00 -

Vinous (93-95)
The 2019 Meursault Les Porusots 1er Cru has one of the feistier aromatics from Dominique Lafon, featuring vibrant yellow plum, marmalade and orange pith aromas, very well defined and wonderfully assimilated with the oak. The palate is balanced with a crisp bead of acidity that offsets the richness; elegant and refined, leading to a silky-smooth hazelnut and spice-infused finish. This represents a superb followup to the impressive 2018 but might not surpass it. We will find out.HK$37,910.00 -
Vinous (94-96)
The 2020 Meursault Les Porusots 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with lemon verbena, orange pith, honeysuckle and pressed yellow flowers. Vibrant and concentrated. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a little more extract here perhaps, spicy with touches of stem ginger towards the persistent finish. Superb. This vies with the Meursault-Charmes as "best in (Lafon's) show". Closure: Diam 30HK$16,385.00 -

The 2017 Monthélie Les Duresses was in barrel until October and then racked into tank as Lafon felt it was ready. It has a delightful bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, plus a little sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins, but delivers pretty, earthy fruit and a light-hearted finish full of joie-de-vivre.HK$7,620.00 -
Vinous (89)
The 2018 Monthélie Les Duresses has a tightly wound bouquet, the fruit a little darker than I find on the nascent 2019, yet still well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, quite compact and saline. A touch of black pepper enlivens the slightly broody finish. Cellar this for 2–3 years.HK$7,510.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is a little richer and more opulent than the Clos des Chênes, ravishing dark black cherries, cassis and light violet scents burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, the oak a little more pronounced at the moment, therefore I would afford this bold Volnay 4-6 years in bottle if you can wait. Bottled under Diam 30. Closure: Diam 30HK$15,735.00 -
Vinous (91-93)
(just 2-1/2 barrels produced, or 15 hectoliters per hectare): Bright dark red. Vibrant aromas of black cherry, violet and dark chocolate. Richer and rounder than the Monthélie-Les Duresses, with more power and framing acidity to its slightly medicinal black cherry fruit. At once thick and elegant, this highly concentrated, long wine finishes with very classy tannins.HK$18,460.00 -
Vinous (93)
The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which was bottled earlier than the Champans, has an intense nose of black cherries, blueberry, seaweed and iodine. The palate continues that theme: saline on the entry, dense and grippy, and very nicely focused with a lively, lightly spiced finish. Real succulence here, and very good persistence; the elegance is only apparent after the wine is slipping down the throat.HK$7,700.00 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2019 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru comprises four barrels, of which one is new. It has a charming, well-defined and very pure bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry fruit laced with crushed stone. The palate is silky-smooth right from the start, very cohesive and displaying a fine bead of acidity; it actually reminds me of Michel Lafarge in style. This will be utterly seductive.HK$10,220.00 -
Vinous (92+)
Good bright medium red. The most complex and complete of these 2011s on the nose, offering scents of black cherry, menthol, wild herbs and sexy underbrush; sappy and ripe but with noteworthy medicinal reserve. Silky on entry, then thick, bright and highly concentrated, with the violet and licorice lift and firm spine of acidity of a top Cote de Nuits wine. Lovely focus and dark fruit intensity here. Finishes bright and long, with serious but fine-grained tannins. This should age beautifully.HK$15,395.00 -
Vinous (93)
Medium red. Wonderfully deep aromas of kirsch, blackberry, dark chocolate, licorice and minerals are lifted by a floral quality. Concentrated, saline and suave, delivering a terrific core of dark cherry, menthol and spices. A strong spine of refined tannins makes its presence felt late, allowing this lively wine to stretch out impressively on the spicy aftertaste. A classic vintage for this bottling.HK$13,285.00
