Comte Liger-Belair

Although the Domaine is relatively recent, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, an engineer and oenologist, is renewing a two hundred year old family tradition. The vines are biodynamicaly cultivated and a horse ploughs part of the vineyard.  Owning excellent vineyards, he produces wines that are light, aromatic and elegant.

Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2002 (5x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. It has been over ten years since I tasted the debut 2002 La Romanée Grand Cru bottled by Comte Liger-Belair. It has certainly matured with style and in my opinion, has much more to offer than the 2003. It is precise on the nose with red cherries, candied orange peel and appealing floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and nicely judged acidity. I like the tension here, something that defines this vintage. After 13 years this marks a very refined debut that has the edge over the more worked Bouchard bottling. Tasted June 2015.

Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2010 (2x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (95-98 )

Bright medium red. Superripe, soil-driven aromas of raspberry, coffee, mocha, cocoa powder and leather. The silky palate offers almost confectionery sweetness paired with outstanding energy, with all the major Burgundy food groups represented here: fruits, flowers, spices, earth, minerals. The explosive, extremely primary finish saturates the palate and leaves the taste buds humming. A great expression of soil. The 2010s here will go into bottle with alcohol between 12.7% and 13.2%, with chaptalization ranging from 0.2% to 0.5%, according to Liger-Belair.

Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96-98)

The 2016 La Romanée Grand Cru has an intense bouquet with extraordinarily pure black and blueberry fruit, beautifully integrated oak, wilted violets emerging with time. It has more flamboyance than the Romanée-Conti tasted the following day, a little more luster. The palate is very well balanced, balancing on a high-wire, paradoxically intense yet one of the most backward and introspective La Romanées that I have encountered from barrel, dense and unforgiving at the moment. This will require serious bottle age, at least a decade, but I love the salinity that kicks in on the finish and the extremely long aftertaste. Outstanding.
