Domaine du Tunnel

A tiny domaine making some of the most overachieving wines across the Northern Rhône, Domaine du Tunnel is one of the most exciting, up-and-coming producers in the region. Founded in 1994 by Stephane Robert with initially just two-and-a-half hectares in Saint-Joseph, Cornas and Saint-Péray, over the past 25 years they have grown to 11 hectares, still tiny by Rhône standards. For reference, that's half the holdings of Jaboulet, putting it on a more Burgundian scale, just shy of blue-chip Domaine Jean Grivot's 12 hectares. Stephane makes four three Cornas, four leading white wines from Saint Peray and a serious Saint Joseph.

Domaine du Tunnel Cornas 2017 (6x150cl)

Wine Advocate (91-94)

Robert owns four hectares in Cornas, divided into many small parcels along the slope. My projection for his 2017 Cornas is based on tasting a few components from barrel, which expressed varying elements of crushed stone, Christmas spices, violets and cassis. Licorice, normally a sign of super ripe Syrah, is also in evidence. It should turn out to be a medium to full-bodied wine, with a rich, velvety texture and plenty of concentration. Stéphane Robert's winery sits perched on the side of the hill above the village of St-Péray, the domaine named for an old tunnel (which serves as a barrel hall) dug into the hill. The last whites of the day had been pressed, and the team was hosing down the crush pad when I arrived. Here, in St-Péray, Robert said, "The strength of the appellation is the ability to retain freshness, even in hot vintages." Robert likes the 2017s, saying they're between 2015 and 2016 in style. He says 2016 is a bit overshadowed by 2015 and 2017 but gives a lot of pleasure. "For me, 2017 and 2018 are like 2015, but 2015 is a bit harder, for longer cellaring," he said. "I prefer the style of 2017 and 2018." His 2017 Cornas offerings certainly looked impressive from barrel. Joe Czerwinski Wine Advocate 239 31st October 2018

Readers looking for the essence of Cornas would do well to pick up a case of the 2018 Cornas. Deep purple, with a heavenly bouquet of blueberries, raspberries, crushed violets, olives, ground pepper, and gamey meats, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a balanced, classy texture, building yet polished tannins, and a great finish. It's a winner.

Vinous (93-95)

A complex, deeply perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, cherry liqueur, potpourri and olive, along with a spicy quality that builds with air. Displays impressive energy and focus to the deep-pitched black/blue fruit and floral pastille flavors courtesy of a core of minerality that builds in the glass. Finishes appealingly sweet and very long, with building tannins and lingering floral and mineral notes.

Domaine du Tunnel Saint Joseph 2015 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (95)

I loved the 2015 Saint Joseph from barrel, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint from bottle. Sporting a deep purple color as well as awesome notes of blackberries, olives, bay leaf, scorched earth, and liquid violets, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, remarkable purity, and an elegant, yet powerful profile. It’s a spectacular Saint Joseph that will keep for 10-15 years.

Vinous (92-93)

Limpid straw-gold. Mineral-accented aromas of fresh pear, yellow plum and jasmine pick up orange zest and fennel accents with air. Silky and sharply focused on the palate, offering intense citrus and pit fruit flavors that are energized by a jolt of juicy acidity. Shows impressive power and mineral thrust on the penetrating finish, which leaves behind hints of bitter orange pith and fennel.
