Edouard Delaunay
About Edouard Delaunay
The story of the rise of Maison Edouard Delaunay in Burgundy is a fascinating one, and it is a great pleasure to be able to offer the wines for the first time here in the 2021 vintage.
Now an exciting producer with a steep upward trajectory, Maison Edouard Delaunay’s roots go back to the 19th & 20th centuries when their Burgundy merchant business distributed some of the region’s most lusted-after gems, such as DRC. In 1993, the business was sold to a rival negociant, but this did not stop the spirit of the 5th generation, Laurent Delaunay, who purchased the merchant Domaines & Vins de Propriété some 10 years later in 2003, which in turn gave him the distribution model with which to re-launch the wines of Maison Edouard Delaunay.
In 2017 he was able to re-purchase the brand, the family name, and the historic buildings and cellars of the Château de Charmont in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. He rebuilt the business with the help of local growers and his partners from Domaines & Vins de Propriété.
With the super talented Christophe Briotet employed as winemaker, the wines of Edouard Delaunay have been growing in fame ever since, whilst Laurent has also been able to purchase Domaine vineyards in Pommard since 2019, including their stellar 1er Les Chaponnières.
These efforts haven’t gone unnoticed as, most notably, Christophe Briotet has been crowned White Winemaker of the Year 2021 and Red Winemaker of the Year for both 2020 & 2022 by the International Wine Challenge (IWC).

Decanter (93)This wine features a lovely bright raspberry fruit aroma with a bit of menthol and a suggestion of peony. The tannins are substantial, and there is plenty of acidity to draw the wine to a lovely conclusion. The grapes come from 60 – 65 year old vines in the lower part of Grèves where the soils are a bit deeper. The wine shows a true Grèves character in its restraint, elegance, and balance. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-94)80 year old vines in deeper soil just below Rugiens, with deep roots which make it consistent each year. Avoided the frost. 30% whole bunch, three new barrels out of ten. A fine mid purple with some depth of fruit. The stems have done their job of lifting the bouquet, this is rather delightful, too much fruit to be called floral but there are some roses in the background too. A little firmer on the palate, and a fresh acidity to finish. Promising. Drink from 2027-2034. |
