    Egon Muller

From the Scharzhofberg vineyard, arguably the most famous vineyard in Germany, Egon Müller crafts some of the world’s finest Rieslings that regularly fetch astronomical prices. The Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Trockenbeerenauslese has occupied the third spot on Wine-Searcher’s list of the 50 most expensive wines.

Egon Muller Scharzhof Riesling QBA 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

Gooseberry and crab apple on the nose turn tart, prickly and piquantly seed-tinged when they reemerge on a bracing, firm palate. This is not one of the many easygoing, generous, slightly soft 2018s! The finish is cheek-tugging, mouthwateringly salt-tinged and highly invigorating. (The source vineyards for this large cuvée are Saarburger Rausch, Wiltinger Braunfels and Wiltinger Rosenberg.)

Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2002 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (0)

Tropical fruits on the nose. In the mouth there is a glossy texture and an attractive sense of fat, yet somehow the wine is still delicate and light in touch. A decisive wet stone slate component is a constant throughout. Subtle, interesting finish. 1 star.

Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2018 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92+)

The 2018 Scharzhofberger Kabinett (AP #2) is brilliant, clear and coolish on the nose, with cold, wet and clayey yet also crunchy slate aromas and bright fruit. Lush and precise, with lingering salinity and mineral expression, this is a complex and structured Scharzhofberger Kabinett with great aging potential. Tasted in June 2019.

    2019

Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2019 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Shimmering and pale but brilliant and slightly lime-greenish in color, the 2019 Scharzhofberger Kabinett is crystal clear and precise on the pure, fresh and coolish, highly refined and complex flinty-scented nose that is unmistakably Egon Müller's "regular" Scharzhofberger Kabinett (there is an Alte Reben bottling for the auction in September, too). Lush yet precise and enormously piquant and salty on the palate, it displays crisp white stone fruit aromas and the crystalline mineral nerviness of the iron-rich gray slate soils that eat up the residual sugar easily so that the taste is just electrifying and salty yet not really sweet. This is a frisky, mouthwateringly salty and piquant Riesling of remarkable precision, finesse and elegance, with picture-book tension for Kabinett. The finish is highly stimulating and incomparable. I dare to say that this Kabinett is my favorite this year due to its precision and coolish, precise nature. Tasted from AP 3-20 in April and June 2020.

Egon Muller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Auslese 2017 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2017 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Auslese is intense yet clear and flinty on the ripe and generous, slightly honeyed but precise and slatey nose. Lush, round and juicy on the palate, this is a crystalline, tightly structured and persistently mineral Auslese with a long, slatey-piquant, pretty mouthwatering and finely racy finish. The sweetness is well balanced and lush and bears a highly stimulating salty-mineral grip. A gorgeous Auslese from the Kupp. Tasted from AP #10 in June 2019.

    2016

    Scharzhofberger Riesling Eiswein 2016 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

This amalgam of November 30th and December 5th pickings is at once confectionary in its evocation of candied lemon peel, glazed apricot, quince preserves and vanilla as well as electrically bright thanks to fresh lemon juice and prickly pineapple core. An almost ominously smoky cast on the nose persists on the palate, but there is no volatility, and the wine’s high acids are ultimately well-buffered by glycerol richness and sheer palate density. No taster will be left in any doubt that this embryonically backward elixir is of the frozen Riesling genre. It finishes with phenomenal persistence, albeit not the interactive complexity or the savory, mineral and floral dimensions of which Riesling from this great site is so memorably capable, but which may well emerge with time in bottle. (This wine was not offered at auction, but instead as part of the estate’s non-auction offerings to private customers and the trade.)
