    Elderton

    About Elderton

Elderton is an estate with a turbulent history, saved by the hardworking Lorraine and Neil Ashmead in the early 1980s. The 72 acres of vines that constituted the original Elderton holdings were planted in 1894 by early German settlers, before being purchased by the original Elderton, Samuel Elderton Tolley in 1916.

An unenviable task to be sure, taming such an area of wild vines, but a remarkable turnaround saw the release of Elderton's first estate-bottled wine just two years after purchase. Remaining somewhat unknown and underappreciated for a number of years, the Ashmeads' passion project shot to international acclaim winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1993.

Now under the watchful eyes of brothers Allister and Cameron, the sons of Lorraine and Neil, their family estate which (confusingly!) bears a different name is thriving and expanding. 2010 saw the purchase of the stunning plot from which this exciting Shiraz is sourced - a parcel in the North-East section of the Greenock appellation. Planted in 1915, these ancient plants produce grapes of profound concentration which convey their terroir so transparently it is something to behold.

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (88)

The wood component was slightly excessive in the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead. Elderton has gotten better over recent years in integrating the wood into their reds, so it was surprising that this wine was dominated by creamy, vanilla milkshake-like flavors that nearly concealed its black currant fruit. With medium to full body, moderate tannin, and a chunky/chubby character, it should age nicely for 7-8 years.

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (91)

Displaying a similar color as well as personality and depth, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead exhibits a more scorched/roasted character to its nose, sweeter, more pliable and open-knit flavors, and nearly as much aging potential as the cooler vintage conditions produced in 2002. A beautiful, full-throttle, gutsy Cabernet Sauvignon, it can be drunk now and over the next 10-12 years.

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

I was also given a peek at the development of the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead Elderton Estate. This wine has evolved beautifully, giving pronounced notes of cassis, red cherry and prunes with some spice, coffee and hints of moss and black olives. Full-bodied yet wonderfully elegant and balanced, the tannins here are still quite firm supporting the rich fruit with plenty of acid to enliven. This vintage is delicious now though should continue to cellar to 2016+.

    2004

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (91+)

There was no 2003 produced, but the backward, primary 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead is loaded with potential. Its inky/ruby/purple hue is followed by aromas of vanilla, barbecue smoke, roasted meats, creme de cassis, and new leather. This dense, rich, powerful effort requires 3-4 years of bottle age, and should last for 15-20 years.

    2006

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Ashmead is a single vineyard selection aged for 18 months in new French 300-liter barrels (aka hogsheads). It offers up a superb bouquet of pain grille, pencil lead, scorched earth, espresso, spice box, black currant, and blackberry liqueur. Opulent on the palate, it has gobs of succulent black fruit, well-concealed ripe tannins, impeccable balance, and a long finish. Cellar it for 5-7 years and drink it from 2014 to 2028.

Elderton Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

Lurid violet color. Wild, ripe and pungent aromas of dark berries, spicecake, smoke and potpourri; smells like a cult Napa wine. Big, rich and full, with alluring sweetness to the blueberry, blackberry, rose pastille and candied licorice flavors. Spreads out on the back, finishing with penetrating sweetness and substantial but velvety tannins. I could see this wine improving for at least a decade.

    Elderton Command Shiraz 2000 (6x75cl)

    Wine Spectator (97)

Big and powerful, brimming with tarry, spicy black cherry, dark plum, blackberry and chocolate flavors. Rich and gooey like a warm flourless chocolate cake, yet it finds a plush balance that keeps it from veering off into heaviness. This has grace, harmony and refinement, without losing an ounce of power. Drink now through 2025. 600 cases imported. -HS

    Elderton Command Shiraz 2003 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

While the deep plum/ruby/garnet-tinged 2003 Shiraz Command is slightly less nuanced than the 2002, it is just as powerful and full-bodied, offering copious quantities of fruit, glycerin, tannin, and muscle. This chewy, rich offering appears to be on a faster evolutionary track than its 2002 counterpart. Give it another 2-3 years of bottle age, and consume it over the following 12-15.

    2014

Elderton Ode to Lorraine 2014 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90+)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Csm Ode To Lorraine is youthfully mute at this early stage, offering a glimpse at blackberry and black currant notes with touches of tree bark, espresso, bay leaves and black pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate is taut with a good core of fresh, primary black fruits supported by firm, chewy tannins and finishing with gentle herbal notes.
