    Etienne Sauzet Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl)

    2018

    Etienne Sauzet Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from two parcels. It displays more intensity on the nose compared to the Bienvenue, offering crushed granite/wet limestone aromas, Granny Smith apples and a touch of orange peel. The palate is very saline on the entry, which gets the saliva flowing. This is supremely well focused, taut and linear, with great persistence and precision toward the finish. A superb Bâtard-Montrachet that should age with style.

    Etienne Sauzet Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2012 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2012 Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru is located on the Pucelles side of the vineyard and comes from 70-year-old vines, the oldest in Sauzet’s possession. The nose is very fragrant with scents of granite and dandelion emerging with aeration, all with very fine delineation. The palate is well-balanced with suggestions of white peach and dried apricot on the entry. It remains taut and linear. No flourish on the finish here – just direct mineral notes that leave you wanting another sip. This is infused with great tension and it should age well.

    Etienne Sauzet Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94-96)

There are two and a half barrels of the 2018 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which comes from a parcel planted in 1936. Blossoming in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp yellow orchard fruit, buttered toast and fresh apricots, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with lively acids and appreciable structuring dry extract. This is very promising.

    Etienne Sauzet Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from bought-in grapes sourced from the upper sector. It has a fragrant, floral bouquet with dandelion scents filtering through the citrus fruit, although I actually prefer the gung-ho aromatics of the Bâtard by comparison. The palate is very well balanced with a slightly honeyed texture on the entry. There is a lovely spicy undertow here, and an intense lemongrass-infused finish that lingers 45-plus seconds in the mouth. Very fine. Four barrels produced.

Etienne Sauzet Montrachet Grand Cru 2012 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94+)

Good pale yellow. Sexy aromas of yellow peach, fresh hazelnut, iodine and nutty oak, plus a hint of dried fruits. Wonderfully sweet, rich and concentrated but with firm acidity giving thrust to the middle palate and carrying the finish. Distinctly more gripping than the Chevalier. Boudot vinifies this wine but it's raised in another cellar, which is why I was not able to sample the 2013 at the end of May.

Etienne Sauzet Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru, from purchased grapes originating from the Chassagne side, has a straightforward, well-defined bouquet that, to be honest, does not quite match up to the Chevalier or Bâtard-Montrachet. The palate is very well balanced and intense, with a slightly honeyed texture. There is a touch of ginger toward the finish of orange zest, tangerine and citrus peel, fanning out as a Montrachet ought to. But my money is still on the Bâtard-Montrachet representing Sauzet’s best Grand Cru.

    2019

Etienne Sauzet Montrachet Grand Cru 2019 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru has a clean and precise bouquet that I find less concentrated than either the Bienvenue or Bâtard-Montrachet. There is a very slight minty note that might become more pronounced with time in bottle. The palate is more intense than the nose suggests, slightly honeyed in texture, spicier than the Bâtard with a powerful and persistent finish. I would put it on par with Sauzet’s other Grand Crus rather than ahead, at least at the moment.

    Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru has a more austere bouquet compared to the La Truffière: granite and flint notes, a touch fumé in style. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, strict and correct, a Puligy with a sapid finish that cries out for fruits de mer! Very fine, though one for the Puligny hardcore.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru offers scents of citrus fruit, pressed white flowers and a touch of hazelnut. This opens nicely in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a discrete peppery finish that lingers in the mouth. Impressive energy here. Good potential.

    Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2001 (9x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

Sweet, ripe aromas of peach and flowers. A step up in richness, with lovely density of texture and fat. Nicely integrated acidity carries the wine's strong fruit through a firm finish. This should be delicious from 2005 through 2013.

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Village comes from the usual 12 parcels situated in 7 lieux-dits. This has a reserved, backward nose that takes time to open in the glass. It’s a bashful thing. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead if acidity but again, it is tight and linear. Just a touch of reduction on the finish indicates that it will be best with 3-4. years in bottle.
