Domaine Georges Noellat
About Domaine Georges Noellat
Only in his early 20s, Maxime Cheurlin was marked for stardom from his very first vintage in 2010 and has achieved considerable success already. Taking over the Domaine from his grandmother, situated next door to Sylvain Cathiard, the wunderkind produces complex and delicate wines.
Maxime is the nephew of the Jayer family and a cousin of Guillaume Rouget (son of Emmanuel Rouget) who trained with legendary Henri Jayer. Maxime worked at Rouget in 2009 and Gros Frere & Soeur in Vosne Romanee in 2008. Maxime’s style is modelled somewhat after Rouget’s, with a focus on clarity and a pronounced influence of new oak.
Viniculture
De-stemming completely the grapes (except for 20% for the Echezeaux), he intends to give the wines an outstanding purity. His wines are elegant yet exhibit good power and poise with a good progression of quality and style from the villages-level up to the Grands Crus. The character of the vintage comes through as well with the wines tasting surprising forward from the barrel. These will age well in cellar but also pleasantly enjoyable at every stage in their development.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts is completely de-stemmed and raised in 100% new oak. Now this has a great bouquet: very well defined with intense black cherry and kirsch aromas, deftly controlled and focused. The medium-bodied palate displays dense tannin, and the new oak is quite vocal at the moment but should be subsumed with bottle age. Do I think less new oak would have been preferable? Yes. But I still think this should mature into a fine Les Beaux Monts.HK$23,580.00 -
(3x150cl) 2019Vinous (93-95)
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru, matured in 80% new oak, has a very detailed, focused bouquet of blackberry, briar, raspberry jam and light orange peel aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tarry opening, a smear of dark chocolate combining nicely with the dark berry fruit, but it is unapologetically backward and surly on the finish compared with the Echézeaux or the Vosne Les Chaumes, so give it some serious cellaring.HK$14,305.00 -

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a distinctly marine-driven bouquet with shucked oyster shells permeating the black cherry and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, poise and mineralité in abundance. Maxime Chuerlin rates this above his Echézeaux. I am not going to argue.HK$3,960.00 -

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a gorgeous bouquet that leaps from the glass: red cherries, wild strawberry and crushed stone scents with rose petal aromas emerging with aeration. Wonderful delineation and clever use of oak. The palate is well balanced with finely tuned tannins, perfectly judged acidity and neatly integrated oak. Good substance, rather backward on the black pepper-infused finish, but I can see this evolving well in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.HK$1,995.00 -

(12x75cl) 2014Wine Advocate (91-93)
Matured in 50% new oak, the 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru les Chaumes has a surfeit of energy and tension on the nose that is very precise and defined. There is lovely focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well judged acidity and a svelte, strawberry and raspberry confit finish that lingers nicely. This is struck through with sophistication and class...a case of less equals more.HK$17,375.00 -

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a cohesive, focused bouquet of pure red cherries, bergamot and undergrowth scents and nicely integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannin and well-judged acidity. Touches of spice and blood orange toward the sustained finish complete a really quite joyful 2015 Burgundy. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.HK$11,535.00 -
Wine Advocate (91-93)
The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes, which includes around 20% to 25% whole bunch fruit, has a very elegant, restrained bouquet that just lets the blackberry and raspberry fruit flow from the glass, the oak neatly integrated and not imposing. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry. Again, I appreciate the purity of fruit, the finesse and the charm of this Vosne-Romanée. There is plenty of crunchy red berry fruit on the finish and a pinch of spice. Super bon, as they say in France.HK$1,945.00 -

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a tightly wound, slightly earthy bouquet with scents of kirsch, blueberry and violet, quite showy but kept on a tight leash. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, gentle grip and quite a dense, minerally finish that lingers in the mouth. There is a discreet confit element here. Good potential, because you can feel the energy.HK$12,240.00 -

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has an open, expressive bouquet of cranberry, wild strawberry and rose petal aromas, perhaps not quite as precise as the nascent 2019. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, slightly tarry black fruit and quite a persistent residue of cracked black pepper.HK$14,615.00 -

Matured in 50% new oak, the 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a complex bouquet of red currant, crushed strawberry, licorice and light floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and lightly spiced with touches of cracked black pepper toward the grainy finish. More masculine than other Vosne cuvées, it will require 4–5 years to show its best.HK$2,110.00 -

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru is very expressive on the nose with raspberry, briary and a touch of crushed stone, hints of orange pith. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite strict towards the finish but with commendable length. Fine, but this will need 4-6 years in bottle.HK$2,870.00 -

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru seems a little oaky on the nose, which is occluding the terroir compared to others tasted on my travels. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins, black rather than red fruit with a slightly toasty finish. This feels a bit short overall.HK$1,330.00 -

(this wine was bottled in August of 2017): Good dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe aromas of dark raspberry, licorice pastille and cinnamon, plus a sexy suggestion of torrefaction. Then fresher in the mouth than the nose suggests, displaying a lovely combination of sweet, seamless red berry fruit and vibrant acidity. Velvety and a bit high-toned in the middle palate, but the finish leaves the salivary glands humming. Cheurlin noted that his 2015s were bottled unfined and unfiltered, with volatile acidity levels around 0.6 to 0.65 grams per liter, which contributes to their early aromatic appeal.HK$14,595.00 -

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru has a lovely, very well-defined bouquet of ebullient red cherries, crushed strawberry and rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and quite savory, with lithe tannins, well-judged acidity and hints of dried blood and spicebox toward the finish, which lingers nicely. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.HK$7,220.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96)
5 Star Wine. One of the deeper purple colours. There is a significant weight of fruit, and it is clean enough. This is in the very opulent super-ripe fruit whole bunch style. Still needs time for the future path to become clear. A little dryness at the back and some pepper with blood orange notes in the mix. Very long, with some dark pepper notes. Drink from 2033.HK$10,025.00 -

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru has a vibrant nose despite just a touch of red cherry and cranberry fruit, a subtle earthiness that unfolds with each swirl of the glass.
