    Henri Boillot

    The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.

    The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.

    Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

    (Outstanding) This is perhaps the most floral-suffused nose in the range with its aromas of essence of pear and plenitude of spice and citrus elements. Once again, the mid-palate mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is absolutely gorgeous, which contrasts noticeably with the cuts-like-a-knife finish that remains ultra-refined, balanced and persistent. This is most impressive, particularly for the remarkably fine volume and power that is delivered with grace and class.

    Outstanding. Cool, airy and very pretty aromas of the essence of pear, exotic tea, spice and acacia blossom are trimmed in an admirably discreet touch of oak. Much like the Pucelles, the texture of the slightly bigger and more mineral-driven flavors is wonderfully refined and even more powerful on the explosively long, graceful and bone-dry finale. This is also highly recommended.

    5 Star Wine. Mid yellow, with a biscuity touch. Seems unsubtle until you get to the palate which is super powerful but also with subtlety. This Monopole vineyard comprises four distinct terroirs though they are always assembled. An electric backbone stops the power overturning the balance. Yellow fruit, and then an extraordinary, indeed grand cru, weight. Incisive white fruit finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: December 2023.

    Fine pale lemon and lime colour. An interesting bouquet with some faintly smoky notes joining the fruit. Summer flowers too.     Outstanding A subtle but not invisible application of wood sets off cool aromas of various flowers, pear, apple and orange peel. There is very good volume to the succulent, intense and agreeably textured flavors that culminate in a bone-dry, palate coating and lingering finale where a hint of youthful austere slowly emerges. This is a very impressive and age worthy Puligny villages.

    Outstanding Moderate reduction is enough to push the underlying fruit to the background. By contrast, there is excellent freshness and intensity to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract while delivering impressive length on the balanced, youthfully austere and citrus-tinged finale. This is a really good Puligny villages and even though it's more powerful than usual, it remains stylish and refined. One to buy plus it should age gracefully.

This is a brilliant wine that's worth a special effort to seek out.

    Even more intense purple than the Chevrets with a theme of intense brilliance and zest through the middle. The wood shows a bit at the moment though he has used less in his red wines this year.     Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)

    Bright red-ruby. Rather brooding aromas of cassis, blackberry, smoke and licorice are pure and discreet. Surprisingly rich on entry, then lush and seamless in the middle, but with very good acidity framing and lifting the black fruit and game flavors. The powerful, rising finish features building tannins and a distinct thick-skinned character. The old vines in Boillot's parcel were strongly affected by millerandage, which largely explains this wine's extra measure of texture and concentration. Boillot noted that his 2011s generally have 3.8 to 4 grams per liter of acidity following the malos, which is quite healthy for the vintage.

    (from four parcels of vines between 40 and 60 years of age; fruit in the lower section of the vineyard was wiped out by the frost): Healthy medium red. Slightly reduced nose conveys and medicinal dark raspberry aroma. Then fine-grained and graceful in the mouth, conveying an impression of delicacy to the flavors of raspberry, currant and flowers. Finishes quite suave and long, with very refined tannins. The Boillots made just 10 barrels in place of a normal 30, 3 of them new.

    The 2017 Volnay Les Chevrets 1er Cru has an open-knit, well-defined bouquet of brambly red berry fruit and discreet wilted rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, quite grippy and a little drier than its peers, with a slightly bitter, granular finish. It meliorates in the glass and leaves a pleasant spicy aftertaste. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

From a parcel of 58-year-old vines, this is a quintessentially elegant Volnay that should also drink well young.

    The 2019 Volnay Chevrets 1er Cru has a more backward nose compared to the Fremiets, darker fruit with a pastille-like quality. The palate is well balanced with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity with that pastille leitmotif returning on the elegant and pure finish. This Volnay is refined and approachable, but I suspect it has the legs to give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure.

    An emperor would be pleased with the intensity of this purple robe. The fruit is the most concentrated to date, and picked at the perfect time. Heady, intense, perfectly judged raspberry. This is spectacular. Not over the top, ripe tannins, just the right point of acidity, and excellent persistence. Guillaume speaks of delicacy and I can see what he means despite the Boillot style which is too intense to be designated delicate. Tasted: 10/1/2021

    The 2017 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet of rose petal, morello cherries and light sous-bois aromas. The palate is well balanced and lightly spiced, with fine delineation. The sour cherry finish has its bitterness under firm control. This should drink well over 10–15 years.

    The 2021 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru is bright and focused, very much on the lighter side, as is the case with the reds this year. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, white pepper, rose petals and cinnamon add lovely aromatic top notes.     While the wood treatment and associated menthol character are not subtle they stop short of dominating the more elegant if otherwise similar nose. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer; indeed it's seductive, while offering more evident minerality on the ever-so-mildly austere, complex, balanced and impressively long finale. As it should be, given that the blend is from 5 different 1ers, this is a villages plus in terms of quality.
