Domaine Hubert Lamy
About Domaine Hubert Lamy
Lamy is a historic name in Burgundy, with a vine growing history in St-Aubin stretching as far back as 1640. However, it is Olivier Lamy, the current owner and winemaker of the family estate, who put this artisanal estate on the international fine wine stage.
A diligent vigneron representing the new generation of exciting winemakers, Olivier is keen to make progress in both his vineyard and cellar. Having sharpened his craft at Méo-Camuzet before taking over the family estate in 1996, he established a very sharp acumen for identifying the best and oldest sites. Adding his natural winemaking instinct to more technical knowledge such as how to train vines flexibly, his exquisitely fine and terroir-expressive wines are celebrated by Burgundian connoisseurs the world over.

The 2018 Bourgogne Blanc Les Chatagnière comes from four parcels within the titular climat and sees just a tiny amount of new oak. The nose is a little occluded at the moment, but the palate is well balanced with a lovely texture and a hint of brioche on the finish.HK$3,950.00 -

Vinous (89-92)
(from redder soil over rock; 30 hectoliters per hectare produced): Pale yellow. Aromas of iodine, crushed rock and spicy oak. Chewy and densely packed but quite backward, currently dominated by wet stone and mineral notes. Finishes powerful but youthfully austere, with a repeating wet stone character. Lamy has been planting part of this vineyard at high density, but this fruit is not yet part of the wine. (Incidentally, Lamy did not make a Chassagne-Montrachet Les Macharelles in 2016 owing to the frost.)HK$29,170.00 -

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet La Concis de Champs had wild variations in potential alcohol and acidity levels, caused by differing rootstocks, vine ages, pruning techniques, etc., that made it difficult for Olivier Lamy to pick. This has a bright red apple and lime bouquet that feels well defined. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and very pure. A lovely touch of bitter lemon enlivens and lends edge on the finish. Excellent.HK$15,570.00 -

Lamy's sole grand cru, the 2017 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Haut Densité is simply extraordinary, unfurling in the glass with a youthfully reserved but massively complex bouquet of ripe Meyer lemon, mandarin, green apple and pear, complemented by notes of pastry cream, beeswax and iodine. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, searingly concentrated and powerful, amply endowed with chalky structuring dry extract and underpinned by tangy acids, concluding with an immensely long finish. The Criots-Bâtard has the presence of a red wine this year! It will be fascinating to follow its evolution in bottle.HK$41,275.00 -

The 2020 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Haute Densité is a worthy follow-up to the stunning 2019. Wafting from the glass with aromas of lime zest, white flowers, crisp stone fruit, wet stones and youthful reduction, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its satiny attack segueing into a layered, tightly wound mid-palate that's built around racy acids and chalky extract. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, this is one of the most exciting wines being produced in contemporary Burgundy.HK$54,595.00 -

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots Haut Densité has a fresh apple blossom, white tea and light chalky scents that gains intensity with aeration. The palate is very focused, with fine delineation and mineralité. It is tightly-wound towards the finish with a twist of bitter lemon lingering on the aftertaste.HK$9,895.00 -
Wine Advocate (91-93)
Lamy's superb 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots delivers a striking bouquet of citrus oil, Anjou pear, wet stones and nutmeg, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and searingly mineral palate that's long and penetrating. It's easy to overlook this cuvée while pursuing its profound "Haut Densité" sibling, but that would be a mistake, as this is one of the finest communal Puligny-Montrachet bottlings one can find.HK$16,745.00 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots Vieilles Vignes had just completed its malolactic when I visited at the end of October. It has a pithy, pear and red apple scented bouquet with a light sea spray note. The palate is well balanced with sour lemon, orange zest and a long saline finish. This is a tremendous Puligny that should age with style.HK$24,410.00 -

The 2017 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard 1er Cru has a "cool" nose with cold granite mixed with undergrowth, moss-like scents with a touch of menthol. It is very intense on the palate, one of Lamy's spicier 2017s with a tang of ginger and lemon thyme on the finish. Excellent.HK$10,180.00 -

The 2018 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard 1er Cru offers scents of granite and wet slate on the nose with hints of quince. Very terroir expressive. The palate is gorgeous, so tensile and extremely poised, seductive touches of apricot jam and repeating quince towards the complex finish. What a fabulous Saint-Aubin.HK$7,470.00 -

The 2019 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard 1er Cru conveys a sense of airiness and "space" on the beautifully defined nose of Granny Smith apples and freshly sliced pear mixed with wet rock. The palate is very well balanced with superb tension. A live-wire Chez Edouard that displays immense precision on the finish. Bon vin. Closure: DiamHK$4,020.00 -

The 2020 Saint-Aubin Derrière Chez Edouard 1er Cru has a straight down the line limestone-scented bouquet with a touch of shucked oyster shells. The palate is very harmonious, taut and fresh, with crisp acidity and impressive tension. A surfeit of energy on the finish, this is a seriously fine Saint-Aubin.HK$3,545.00 -

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 St Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chateniere from Domaine Hubert & Olivier Lamy was not as clean on the nose as its peers, slightly cheesy at first and then light mothball scents. The palate is fresh on the entry with a pretty kiwi fruit and Cornice pear opening; but it never achieves the same level of tension and focus as other premier crus from the appellation, and it seems to drift on the finish. This may well be entering a dumb phase, and it may well re-find the promise it demonstrated from barrel, hence my plus sign.HK$21,110.00 -

The 2017 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru has an intriguing undergrowth and bell pepper-scented nose. There is a fine line of acidity on the palate, very tensile and focused on the saline finish, residual hints of stem ginger lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent.HK$2,090.00 -

The 2019 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru expresses its terroir exquisitely on the nose, displaying wonderful mineralité and precision. The palate is well balanced, with a silver bead of acidity, and tensile from start to finish, yet expanding right at the end with mouthwatering sappiness. I remember this being impressive out of barrel last year, and now in bottle, Lamy has successful translated all that potential. Closure: DiamHK$7,205.00 -

The 2020 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru comes from steep limestone slopes and shows quite a bit of Coche reduction at the moment. But one can tell there is real tension and concentration here. The palate is tensile on the entry, freshly-sliced lime and tangy orange pith, fanning out with a sense of brio towards the finish. This is another classy offering from Olivier Lamy this vintage.HK$2,010.00 -

Pale yellow. Musky aromas of ripe apple, orange zest and toast; in a slightly oxidative phase. Fat and rich on the palate for a wine with 12.8% alcohol, with peach and apple flavors conveying a low-acid impression. A touch bitter on the finish. These vines on hard calcaire and friable clay produce small yellow grapes that ripen quickly at the end--and especially in 2015, according to Lamy.HK$13,985.00
