    Il Marroneto

    About Il Marroneto

Il Marroneto was founded by Giuseppe Mori and together with his sons, Alessandro and Andrea Mori, both lawyers, they made their first vintage in 1980, yielding a modest 1,855 bottles. Since then, their estate has grown to the current 5.8 hectares. As the winemaker, Alessandro takes the traditional approach of minimal intervention approach, producing some of the most long-lived Brunellos “along the lines of those made by Biondi-Santi and Costanti” (Ian D’Agata, Vinous). Il Marronetos' vineyards sit roughly 400m above sea level, providing the coolness to retain acidity and freshness in its fruit.

Dark red cherries, mint, sage, tobacco, licorice and new leather blossom in Il Marroneto's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. Savory and lifted in the glass, the 2010 possesses stunning overall balance and tons of nuance. The tannins are firm and incisive, yet also remarkably polished. Ideally, readers should cellar the 2010 for at least a few years, but it is going to be very hard to resist the temptation of drinking the 2010 young.

Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino 2013 (6x75cl)

Bright red. The intense note of violet on the nose is absolutely captivating and nicely lifts the aromas of sweet red cherry and aromatic oils. Then very rich, dense and juicy, conveying a seamless quality to its multilayered orchard fruit, spicy red berry and mineral flavors. The exhilarating finish echoes with lingering and repeating floral and mineral notes nicely extended by lipsmacking but harmonious acidity. Classic vintages such as the 2013 really showcase Il Marroneto’s magnificent terroir to its fullest capacity; in these vintages, talented Alessandro Mori produces sleek, refined Brunellos that are true benchmarks of Sangiovese in Montalcino. Very well done.

    Wine Enthusiast (98)

Fragrant and loaded with finesse, this perfumed red features enticing scents of woodland berry, pine forest, violet, underbrush and a whiff of sandalwood. Elegantly structured, it’s tantalizingly ethereal, delivering juicy red cherry, strawberry, black tea, licorice and a pronounced mineral note evoking rusty iron alongside tightly knit, refined tannins. It’s surprisingly vibrant for the hot vintage and still youthfully austere, but that’s a good thing as it shows great aging potential. Drink 2025–2035.

Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie 2006 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie is a big, broad-shouldered wine endowed with impressive concentration in its dark red fruit. Floral notes are woven throughout, adding lift and elegance. The oak tannins come through a touch prominently on the finish, adding an element of dryness that is distracting. Otherwise, this is a first-rate effort with a brilliant future.

    Wine Advocate (97)

Sangiovese-whisperer Alessandro Mori has delivered another superstar wine with the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna Delle Grazie. The bouquet is detailed and fine with bright accents of fragrant red rose, red currant, cola, licorice, grilled herb and crushed white peppercorn. The bouquet is loose, light and buoyant, with a smooth and natural progression of building aromas. The mouthfeel, however, is direct, important and determined. It's that playful juxtaposition between the wine's soft side and its stern side that makes this such an interesting and sensational wine to drink. Only 5,993 bottles were produced, and that's the bad news.

Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie lights up the senses from the very first moment. Its aromatics alone are worth the price of entry; an exotic, spicy bouquet blends lavender, blood orange and tart raspberries with mentholated herbs, smoke and crushed stone. The textures are unbelievably soft, like liquid velvet, enveloping with mineral-tinged ripe cherries and sweet, sweet spice. This is so pretty and expressive, yet also juicy and fresh. Fine tannins mount, though they are only noticeable through the finale, where saline-minerals mix with sour citrus and autumnal spice in an expression that just goes on and on. The 2017 transcends the vintage, and while it may not possess the power typical of Madonna delle Grazie, it instead communicates its undeniable beauty and grace. I tasted the 2017 both in Montalcino, at the winery, and in our office, where it only got better over the three days I followed it. It's a total classic.

Il Marroneto Rosso di Montalcino Ignaccio 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino Ignaccio is delicate yet deep and perfumed, with a hauntingly beautiful bouquet of rose hips, lavender and raspberries laced with nuances of sweet spice. There’s remarkable purity within, lifted and wonderfully refined, as juicy acidity further enlivens its vivid notes of ripe strawberry and plum. Just a hint of fine tannin lingers, allowing nuances of clove and licorice to echo on. This lively and fresh Rosso will win a lot of hearts. Frankly, it’s hard to put the glass down.
