    Domaine Jacques Prieur

    About Domaine Jacques Prieur

Since 1868, Domaine Jacques Prieur has quietly but diligently assembled what may just be the single most extensive collections of vineyards of any single Domaine in the region. One of, or quite probably the only, vineyard owning estates in Burgundy to currently own plots across both Côte de Beaune and Nuits, collectors have been seeking out and delighting in the wines of Jacques Prieur for centuries.

Today, one of France’s greatest female winemakers is at the helm, overseeing a mosaic of truly exceptional terroirs. Nadine Gublin was in fact named Best Winemaker in France by the Revue de Vin de France in 1998, and has done nothing but improve her methods and knowledge since then. Examples of this include the move towards some selective whole-bunch fermentation and the well-judged usage of between 50 and 80% new oak barrels for their Grands Crus.

      Vinous (83-85)

The 2020 Bourgogne Blanc is matured half in concrete vat and half in barrel with 30% new wood. It has a simple bouquet with apple blossom and pear aromas. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, though straightforward with a grapey finish. Closure: Diam

    • Jacques Prieur Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2009 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (93-94)

(this was racked off its lees the day before my visit and was slated to be bottled before the 2011 harvest): Slightly cloudy yellow. Aromas of peach, apple, spices and crushed stone, with a hint of noble reduction. At once chewy and smooth, with a distinctly taut quality to its flavors of apricot, minerals, anise and flint. Finishes saline and powerful, with a flavor of custard pie as well as a note of grapefruit pith that tickles the taste buds. Lots of aging potential here.

    • Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2007 (6x75cl)

      Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (94)

(in barrel) Bright yellow. Lemon, lime, menthol and mint on the nose. Dense and sappy, with pungent minerality and captivating sugar/acid cut. Finishes with a strong flavor of crushed stone. Offers terrific potential.

    • Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2010 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (94-96)

(these were the last chardonnay vines harvested in 2010): Very pale yellow with a green tinge. Brilliantly pure, high-pitched aromas of chalk, lime blossom, peppermint, spearmint, white pepper, anise and wild herbs. Delicate on entry, then saline, dry and rich in the middle, with outstanding cut and precision to its flavors of crushed rock, spices and truffle lifted by mint oils. Classic east-facing Corton-Charlemagne from marne blanche soil in Ladoix. For all its energy, this wine already boasts a remarkably silky texture. The palate-staining finish leaves the salivary glands humming.

    • Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (92-94)

(harvested on September 12, with potential alcohol of 12.8%; from an east-facing, cool site at the top of the hill, just under the trees, where phenolic maturity usually comes before sugar ripeness): Pale, bright, green-tinged yellow. Pungent, raw aromas of crushed stone, pepper, truffle and earth: very white soil in character. The impression of rawness continues on the tight, leanish palate, which offers pure flavors of crushed stone, pepper and saline minerality. With less stuffing here than the Montrachet, this penetrating, soil-driven wine comes across as austere. But its lingering perfume suggests that it will reward extended cellaring.

    • Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2016 (3x75cl)

      Vinous (93-94)

(harvested last among the whites, on September 29; no frost here): Bright, green-tinged yellow. Highly distinctive aromas of lime, powdered stone, mint, pine needles and white pepper; fruit is the least of it! A seriously concentrated wine of terroir, showing lovely powdered-stone lift to its flavors of menthol, chalk, brown bread and fresh mushroom. Saline, tightly wound wine with lovely clarity and inner-mouth tension; quite dry but plenty ripe. The salty, tactile finish saturates the palate and leaves the taste buds quivering. Very Corton-Charlemagne! (12.6% without chaptalization)

    • Jacques Prieur Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

      Tim Atkin MW (95)

These old vines sit up against the woods on the Ladoix side, so this is typically later in the succession of picking dates chez Prieur. It's hard to find Corton this delectable and charming, especially so young. The vintage shines through beautifully here. The wine blazes with pure yellow fruits, oyster shell and puff pastry. Its delicious, robust core is nicely defined by bracing acidity. 2023-38

    • Jacques Prieur Meursault Clos de Mazeray Blanc Monopole 2020 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (89-91)

The 2020 Meursault Clos de Mazeray Blanc has a nicely detailed bouquet with jasmine and white flower scents complementing the citrus fruit. I find this more complex than the Beaune Blancs. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, hints of tangerine and spice with quite a persistent finish. Enjoy this over the next decade. Closure: Diam

    • Jacques Prieur Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x150cl)

      Vinous (94-96)

The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru is matured in 60% new oak. It has a finely tuned bouquet with scents of granite filtering through the green apple and pear aromas, and just a little linseed oil in the background. The well-balanced palate displays a fine bead of acidity, good tension from start to finish and a crescendo of concentration that leaves you feeling that you are in the presence of a famous (the most famous?) vineyard. This is a very worthy "Monty" with great potential.

    • Jacques Prieur Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

      Burghound (94-97)

There is a touch of phenolic character to the highly complex and exuberantly spicy nose of white peach, citrus confit, acacia blossom, Asian-style tea and just enough wood influence to merit mentioning. The imposingly dense broad-shouldered flavors possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm acid spine supporting the strikingly persistent finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose reappears. This beauty is very, very backward and I would recommend not touching a bottle for at least ten years.

    • Jacques Prieur Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 2007 (6x75cl)

      Burghound (90-93)

A ripe, fresh, elegant, expressive and classy nose of green apple, pear and a hint of honeysuckle trimmed in a bit of wood toast leads to rich, full and impressively concentrated flavors that possess palate staining intensity on the opulent, powerful and explosive finish. This is a big but balanced effort.

    • Jacques Prieur Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 2020 (6x75cl)

      Tim Atkin MW (94)

Made entirely in barrels with 30% new oak, this exemplifies the delicate flair of Puligny. Starting off with dried white flowers, tree blooms, baking spice and orchard fruit, the aromas are very diverse. The mid-palate is focused with good density and the flavors finish with a pleasant, mouth-coating richness. This is enticingly accessible already. 2022-35
