Jean Tardy Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes-de-Nuits Cuvee Maelie 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (82)

The 2013 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits is fully mature on the nose and now lacks energy. The palate is fleshy but rather bitter with a flagging finish suggesting this has run its course. Bottles should be drunk in the near future or yesterday. Tasted at Flint Wines' Value Burgundy tasting.

Jean Tardy Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes-de-Nuits Cuvee Maelie 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (87)

(from 40-year-old vines; no new oak here): Good medium red. Dark berries and spicy, slightly resiny oak on the nose. Lightly saline and round, with harmonious ripe acidity framing the sappy purple fruit flavors. This supple, spicy wine should offer early appeal.

Jean Tardy Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes-de-Nuits Cuvee Maelie 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (86-88)

(from a single parcel just above the Vosne-Romanée limits): Healthy medium red. Black cherry tart, violet and licorice on the nose. Juicy and energetic, conveying a primary quality and a strong spine of acidity to the flavors of blackberry and bitter chocolate. Not a particularly ripe style for 2015 but the tannins are surprisingly fine-grained. And the wine's spicy and floral notes give it easy gulpability and a light touch.

Jean Tardy Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes-de-Nuits Cuvee Maelie 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (87-88)

(from 45-year-old vines in Concoeur, in the hills behind Vosne-Romanée; there was no frost here in 2016 but vines in a small valley just 500 meters away were decimated, according to Tardy; 12.1% natural alcohol chaptalized to 12.8%): Healthy dark red. Ripe, sappy aromas of black cherry, black raspberry and licorice. A medium-bodied wine with sweet berry and cherry fruit flavors framed by a firm edge of acidity and complicated by a leathery nuance. Lovely vinosity here, with an acidulated red fruit character and fine, dusty tannins that suggest this wine will evolve slowly. Tardy told me that Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet and Domaine Arlaud own vines in the same windy, rocky, essentially flat site.

    Jean Tardy Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Athets 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Athets was quite reduced on the nose when I tasted it, making it difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, quite fleshy and pure with vibrant red fruit quite caressing on the finish. Enjoy this over the next decade.

Jean Tardy Echezeaux Grand Cru Les Treux VV 2007 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (91)

Tardy’s 2007 Echezeaux Les Treux Vieilles Vignes comes from vines especially susceptible to millerandage, and displays the greatest purity and transparency of bright black fruits in the current collection, allied to a rarified, sirloin juice-like expression of meatiness. Black pepper, cumin, and lemon zest add complexity to the nose and invigorating pungency to the wine’s finish. A slightly chewy sense of tannic density does nothing to obscure a wealth of mineral inflections – humus, chalk, peat – and should be instrumental in permitting this to age interestingly for 15 or more years. I would frankly have taken this blind for a 2008.

Jean Tardy Echezeaux Grand Cru Les Treux VV 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90+)

The 2015 Echézeaux Les Treux Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru seems to have entered a sulky phase. Here, it has a rather straightforward bouquet considering its status: pleasant brambly red fruit without much lift (at least compared to the bottle tasted a year ago.) The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins and a mixture of black and red fruit, but the finish feels tightly coiled. Needs several years in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

    2014

Jean Tardy Fixin La Place 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

Dark medium red. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco, mocha and menthol are a bit lower-toned and more rustic than those of the 2015. Then surprisingly supple and sweet in the mouth, offering pliant red fruit flavors. Finishes with dusty, slightly oak-influenced tannins and good length and lift.

    2015

Jean Tardy Fixin La Place 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (87-89)

(13% natural alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Pungent aromas of blackberry, menthol, licorice and violet. Intense, juicy and penetrating; still quite primary and tight but nicely balanced. The late-arriving tannins make this a relatively supple style of Fixin.

    2016

Jean Tardy Fixin La Place 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88-89)

(one-third new oak): Dark red-ruby color. Ripe black cherry and dark chocolate on the nose. Silky on entry, then nicely round for Fixin, with its flavors of blackberry, boysenberry and bitter chocolate given shape by well-integrated acidity; shows slightly medicinal kirsch character. The tannins arrive late and build, while remaining harmonious and supple. Production was 38 hectoliters per hectare, as there was little frost here.

Jean Tardy Gevrey Chambertin Champerrier Vv 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes has one of the more outgoing bouquets that I tasted from Tardy, featuring forward red cherry, raspberry coulis and pressed rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, cohesive and focused, and yet it might be missing the complexity shown by the 2018 on the finish, where it decides to play it safe. Still, this is a very attractive Gevrey-Chambertin.

Jean Tardy Gevrey Chambertin Champerrier Vv 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes has quite a voluminous bouquet of precocious dark cherries, bergamot and floral scents, certainly one of the more expressive of Guillaume Tardy’s 2018s at this early juncture. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and rounded in style, presenting tobacco-tinged red fruit toward the smooth and quite persistent finish. There is a dash of black pepper on the aftertaste. Very fine.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs Perrières Vieilles Vignes has a nicely detailed and terroir expressive bouquet, brambly red fruit mixed with sous-bois and light truffle aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, silky smooth in texture with a precise and quite pure finish. One of my picks from Tardy this year.

    2002

    Jean Tardy Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots 2002 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

The 2002 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a really engaging, vivacious bouquet with smudged red cherries, kirsch, peppermint and undergrowth scents. The palate is medium-bodied with thick, grippy tannin. This feels quite savoury at 16-years of age, almost animally towards the finish but still quite attractive. I would drink this over the next five or six years. Tasted at Sarah Marsh MW’s 2002 Red Burgundy tasting.
