Maison Joseph Drouhin

Abour Maison Joseph Drouhin

The eponymous Joseph Drouhin founded the négociant company, which bears his name in 1880, having spent much of his early life in Yonne. His son Maurice took over in 1918, buying the first vineyards, including the famous Clos des Mouches, which we are delighted to offer below. An arduous process of expansion thanks to the nature of Burgundy’s patchwork of owners, Maurice was finally able to carve out quite the empire for his family, which endures to this day.

A titanic character in Beaune, Maurice both sat on the INAO committee and acted as deputy administrator of the Hospices de Beaune throughout the turbulent World War II. At the height of his powers, Drouhin even had exclusive distribution rights to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. However, he was unable to purchase a portion of the company, which subsequently went to Leroy.

His successor was his nephew Robert Jeausset-Drouhin, who took charge in 1957. Still maintaining a watchful eye over proceedings, Robert has ceded main control to his children (and fourth generation) Frédéric, Laurent, Philippe and Véronique. Philippe Drouhin manages the vineyards biodynamically, and as of 2009, their entire range has the ECOCERT organic certification.

Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches 2018 (6x75cl)

Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge 1er Cru has a very pure, charming bouquet of layers of dark cherry, raspberry coulis and blueberry aromas, with just a touch of warmth from the slightly higher level of alcohol. The medium-bodied palate delivers saturated tannins. Lush and generous, almost New World-like in terms of fruit profiles, with a caressing finish. Lovely.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Beaune Clos des Mouches 1er Cru (Rouge) contains 30% whole cluster. Dark berry fruit commingles with wet clay and light minty aromas. The palate is well balanced with a silky texture, a little "fatter" than the Beaune Grèves, with hints of licorice toward the persistent and very saline finish. This deserves four to five years in bottle, but it has a long, prosperous future ahead.

Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc 2014 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Drouhin's 2014 Beaune 1er Cru Blanc Clos des Mouches was showing strong hazelnut and smoke aromas, very Meursault-like in style with good intensity if not exuding the grace of its peers. The palate is fresh on the entry, quite rich and intense with well-judged acidity. There remains some oak to be integrated, but it is certainly in proportion with the fruit and it feels very persistent on the finish. This has just edged up a notch in quality since I last encountered it.

Pale lemon colour. The power is immediately apparent on the nose, but in a good way. A wine for longer elevage before bottling and then worth the wait in bottle thereafter. This has all the expected volume of white fruit while retaining impeccable balance. Adds depth with time in the glass, before reaching quite a saline finish. A very youthful but impressive Clos des Mouches. I recently enjoyed a stunning bottle of the 2017, and this could very well match it in due course. Tasted: November 2021

Joseph Drouhin Beaune-Greves 1er Cru 2011 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90)

The 2011 Beaune 1er Cru Greves is from the upper part of the climat on rocky soils that engender more structured wines with perhaps less finesse. The vines are now about 35 years old. It has a perfumed nose with hints of heather and lavender in infusing the mixture of red and black fruit. The palate is well-balanced with a lovely spicy entry. There is a gentle grip and a vibrant, peppery finish that leaves the mouth tingling afterwards, almost like a pleasant Rhone. Drink now-2018.

Burghound (92)

Here the nose plays on the edge of reduction and while it doesn't completely mask the floral-scented nose of dark berries and earth, it does render it less expressive. The rich and notably denser medium-bodied flavors also flash a lovely minerality that adds a sense of lift to the much firmer, even robust finish that is presently somewhat youthfully austere. Patience required but this should ultimately be excellent.

Joseph Drouhin Beaune-Greves 1er Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (90-92+)

Aromas of cassis, plums, sweet soil tones and espresso roast, framed by a deft touch of new oak, introduce the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves, a medium to full-bodied wine with a sweet core of fruit that's structured around fine but youthfully chewy tannins. This, too, will reward a bit of bottle age.

Joseph Drouhin Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2014 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru was cropped on September 19 and includes 15% whole cluster fruit, and unlike the Musigny, this had not been bottled. Deep in color, it has great volume and generosity on the nose with blackberry, boysenberry and wilted violet aromas. The fruit is more red than black, perhaps quite Vosne-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, clean and pure, quite refined with deftly integrated oak. Curiously, it comes across as linear on the finish. This is a strict Bonnes-Mares with good tension, a Bonnes-Mares that does not want to let its hair down at the moment. I'd like to see just a little more flamboyance once in bottle.

Wine Advocate (96-98)

The 2015 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is a class act in the making, perhaps one of the finest barrel samples that I have tasted from Drouhin. This gem has a gorgeous and extraordinarily pure bouquet with crushed strawberry, pomegranate and overripe orange scents that are exquisite and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with super fine, almost filigree tannin that seem to caress the senses. It constitutes the most sophisticated of Drouhin's 2015s with ineffable finesse on the finish that lingers so long in the mouth. This is simply a brilliant wine.

The 2017 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru includes 40% whole cluster fruit and contains both estate and purchased fruit. It has a lovely bouquet of dark berry fruit laced with bergamot and undergrowth aromas, beautifully defined, with real Pinoté shining through. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit. There is wonderful balance here, and a subtle spiciness comes through on the finish. This is one of Drouhin’s best 2017 reds.

Perfectly ripe strawberries with raspberry and citrus undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied with really fine tannins that are nicely wrapped in ripe fruit. There’s a savory, lightly meaty highlight to the flavors. It’s long and complex in the finish. Really balanced and attractive now, but will deliver even more in the future. Better after 2023.

A gentle application of wood sets off the fresh, ripe and refined aromas of various red berries, anise, clove and sandalwood. There is a velvety and highly seductive mouth feel to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that display plenty of minerality on the lush yet well-detailed finish that is firm and mildly austere but not hard.
