La Lagune

The vineyards of Chateau La Lagune were planted in 1724 and since produce fine Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Chateau was classified in the fourteen Troisiemes Crus in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. It is now under the formidable proprietress Caroline Frey, also responsible for the historic Paul Jaboulet Aine estate in the Rhone.

La Lagune 1978 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (88)

The 1978 La Lagune remains deep in color, with no sign of maturity. The expansive bouquet suggests roasted nuts, plums, and fresh new oak. On the palate, the wine is tannic, but lush and silky, with oodles of fruit present. It has been slow to evolve, and at its age, still tastes young and vigorous. Anticipated maturity: Now-2005. Last tasted, 12/89.

La Lagune 1983 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (86)

Beginning to crack up at the seams, the dark garnet-colored 1983 shows some amber at the edge . The nose shows notes of ashtray and asphalt intermixed with some earth, compost, and dark fruits. A certain mushroomy quality has entered the formula, and the once-sweet fruit seems to be ever-so-slightly becoming drier and the character of the wine more desiccated/attenuated. Drink up. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 12/02.

La Lagune 1990 (1x75cl)

Wine Spectator (95)

A wine to linger over. The aromas are opulent with new oak and ripe fruit; a rich, concentrated palate offers cherry, current, cedar and licorice flavors. It's full-bodied yet graceful, beautifully structured and seamless, with a long fruity finish. Give it until 1996 to develop.--The Bordeaux 50. 25,000 cases made.

This is racy for a 2006 with plenty of tobacco, berries and hints of mushroom. Light, stylish earthy character. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a pretty finish with lovely tension. Drink or hold.

La Lagune 2007 (12x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (89)

Medium red with ruby highlights. Inky black cherry, licorice and herbs on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. A bit green and youthfully disjointed, but this boasts subtle sweetness and decent grip for the year. With aeration, this showed a somewhat silkier texture without losing its shape.

La Lagune 2010 (12x75cl)

James Suckling (96)

This shows an enchanting nose of roses, violets and other flowers. It's also fruity but very subtle. A full-body, super-structured red with an excellent backbone of ripe yet firm tannins. Goes on for minutes. Don’t touch for five or six years. Try in 2019.

La Lagune 2017 (12x75cl)

Neal Martin - Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 La Lagune was picked from 12 September until 30 September at 31hl/ha, matured in 50% new oak. It has a very clean and pure bouquet, quite floral in style, with scents of raspberry confit, crushed stone, a touch of mint and pressed flowers. This is precise and focused, one of the most refined bouquet that I have encountered on a La Lagune at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannin on the entry that presage a tensile, mineral-driven La Lagune. There is almost a flint-like element to this wine, like the nose, the palate extremely precise with a sustained Pauillac-inspired finish with pencil lead on the aftertaste.
