Le Tertre Roteboeuf

Deeply passionate, Francois Mitjavile makes Tertre-Rotebouef - a ‘garage wine’ with real character. The small estate on a limestone slope in Saint Emilion has terroir of a very high standard. Very low yields give the wine intense concentration of fruit and, combined with a lavish use of oak, makes this a rich and sumptuous wine.

Tertre Roteboeuf 1990 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (75-94)

Early in its life, this wine was close to perfection, but two bottles drunk recently from my cellar show a slight maderized quality, some flawed acetone notes, and a disjointed style suggesting it was falling apart. I am at a loss to understand this decline as it was showing fabulously well just a few years ago. There is still lots of viscosity, and the wine is full-bodied, but two examples of an oxidized, flawed wine are disheartening.A third bottle from the exact same case that the first two bottles came from proved to be a completely different species altogether. This is the 1990 Tertre Roteboeuf I thought had been made. I have no explanation for such enormous bottle variation, but the third bottle had a beautiful dark plum/garnet color to the rim, with just a hint of lightening, a sensationally exotic nose of roasted coffee, melted chocolate, herbs, and sweet kirsch and plum. Even a hint of fig made it into the wine’s gorgeous aromatic display. In the mouth, the wine was full-bodied, powerful, rich, still showing some tannin to shed, but the sweetness, expansiveness, exuberance, and overall purity were stunning. This wine, which had the same level of ullage as the other two, was a completely different experience than the two bottles that had a maderized characteristic. Who knows, but I am certainly hoping the rest of my stash resembles the third bottle rather than the first two. If that’s the case, then it should continue to drink well for at least another 10-12 years. Release price: ($550.00/case)

Tertre Roteboeuf 2007 (1x300cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2007 Bordeaux tasting. The 2007 Le Tertre-Rôteboeuf has an irresistible bouquet with plush red and black fruit, crème de cassis and vanilla pod, almost Burgundian in style and billowing with aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and plush with dark plum, macerated red cherries and strawberry. But this is all about that velvety texture and the weight and concentration on the finish. Surely this is Tertre-Rôteboeuf? It is! Perhaps the most delicious wine of the vintage. Tasted March 2015.

Wine Advocate (98+)

The 2015 Le Tertre Roteboeuf is deep garnet-purple in color with a gorgeous nose of baked cherries, warm plums, crème de cassis and mulberries with touches of rare beef, violets, mocha, Chinese five spice and fertile loam. Full-bodied, rich, spicy and with firm, grainy tannins, it has seamless freshness and a very long, spicy finish. This is wonderfully seamless and harmonious.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Le Tertre Roteboeuf offers up gorgeous wild blueberries, crushed blackcurrants and redcurrants notes with touches of lavender, violets, Sichuan pepper and cloves plus a waft of anise. The medium to full-bodied palate is very firm with ripe, grainy tannins and wonderful freshness and depth, finishing very long with some exotic spices coming through.

Tertre Roteboeuf 2018 (1x300cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (97-99)

The 2018 Tertre Roteboeuf is another powerful, opulent wine from this estate that reminds me a little of the 2005 with its density and tannic structure. Cassis, graphite, black raspberries, and tons of classy oak all emerge from this full-bodied beauty that has tons of fruit and texture, a stacked mid-palate, and a big finish. It’s a massive, sumptuous, and lavishly oaked and fruited wine that’s going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for 25-30 years.

Tertre Roteboeuf 2020 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (97-99)

One of the wines of the vintage will be the 2020 Château Tertre Roteboeuf, which has its classic exotic, boisterous, incredibly sexy personality front and center. Cassis, smoked meats, vanilla, graphite, white truffle, and a liqueur of rocks-like minerality are just some of the nuances here, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, incredibly purity, building tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. I followed this barrel sample for just under a week and it never showed a hint of oxidation or fatigue. This cuvée always shows lots of oak (it’s brought up in 100% new barrels), especially in its youth, but it is incredibly well-integrated and largely disappears once at full maturity. Hide bottles for 7-8 years if you can, and it’s going to keep for 30 years or more.
