    Le Tertre Roteboeuf

Deeply passionate, Francois Mitjavile makes Tertre-Rotebouef - a ‘garage wine’ with real character. The small estate on a limestone slope in Saint Emilion has terroir of a very high standard. Very low yields give the wine intense concentration of fruit and, combined with a lavish use of oak, makes this a rich and sumptuous wine.

    Tertre Roteboeuf 2000 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98)

My all-time favorite vintage of Tertre-Roteboeuf, the 2000 should age much more consistently than the rather irregular 1990 or the top-notch 1989. The 2005 should give it a run for its money down the road, but at present, this wine is performing fabulously well. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with notes of kirsch liqueur and licorice. This St.-Emilion could pass for a great Chateauneuf du Pape or top-notch Musigny, although it has more power and depth than a burgundy, and none of the peppery/garrigue characteristics of a Rhone. Nevertheless, there is a sweet character from the high glycerin level as I suspect the alcohol content exceeds 14%. Velvety textured and full-bodied, but surprisingly youthful, this stunningly rich wine can be drunk now, but promises to last another two decades.

    Tertre Roteboeuf 2004 (1x300cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (90-92)

Bright ruby-red. Cassis, licorice and bitter chocolate aromas. Sweet, dense and very young, with an almost exotic liqueur-like character but also terrific vibrancy and sap. Complicating notes of licorice and game. There's something downright Burgundian about this wine. Finishes firmly tannic and very long, with terrific grip. An exhilarating sample, and a wine that gives every indication of having the backbone and ripeness to develop slowly and well in bottle.

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2007 Bordeaux tasting. The 2007 Le Tertre-Rôteboeuf has an irresistible bouquet with plush red and black fruit, crème de cassis and vanilla pod, almost Burgundian in style and billowing with aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied and plush with dark plum, macerated red cherries and strawberry. But this is all about that velvety texture and the weight and concentration on the finish. Surely this is Tertre-Rôteboeuf? It is! Perhaps the most delicious wine of the vintage. Tasted March 2015.

    Tertre Roteboeuf 2009 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (96)

The 2009 Le Tertre-Rôteboeuf has a classically styled nose in the context of the vintage, almost Left Bank in style with touches of pencil box infusing the brambly red berry fruit. There is just a distant tang of autumn bonfire. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, quite tight and structured with a light peppery, cedar-tinged finish that lingers impressively in the mouth. Tasted several times before, this remains an outstanding Saint-Émilion from François Mitjavile. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

    Tertre Roteboeuf 2011 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Ian D'Agata (90-93)

Deep ruby-red. Intense aromas of red cherry, coffee and mocha. Spicy and sweet, with ripe red fruit, cassis and mocha flavors that come across as tighter and less immediately sexy than in most vintages. Finishes smooth and long, with very good clarity and cut. This will need plenty of time to develop more creamy flesh, but it's yet another outstanding Le Tertre Roeteboeuf in the making. For the first time in years, owner François Mitjaville showed this wine before his Cote de Bourg property Roc de Cambes, which, though less complex, is just as voluptuous a wine in 2011 as its much more famous stablemate.

From a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, scents of wet earth, forest, caramel and black raspberries pop from the glass. In the mouth, lush cherry griotte, fresh black raspberry and spice, leave a lasting impression. The harvest took place from October 15 to October 20, making this one of the property’s latest crops. The wine reached 13.8% alcohol and the pH is 3.88. 93-95 Pts

The 2015 Le Tertre Roteboeuf is deep garnet-purple in color with a gorgeous nose of baked cherries, warm plums, crème de cassis and mulberries with touches of rare beef, violets, mocha, Chinese five spice and fertile loam. Full-bodied, rich, spicy and with firm, grainy tannins, it has seamless freshness and a very long, spicy finish. This is wonderfully seamless and harmonious.

    Tertre Roteboeuf 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (100)

The 2016 Tertre-Rôteboeuf is flat-out stunning and also one of the wines of the vintage. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2016 possesses remarkable depth and intensity from the very first taste. The 2016 is exotic, full-throttle and unapologetically hedonistic. At times, Tertre-Rôteboeuf can be a bit rough around the edges, but the 2016 is totally sublime. In a world in which so many wines are copycats, Tertre-Rôteboeuf is an original. And the 2016 is a great, emotionally moving Tertre-Rôteboeuf. This is a magnificent effort1 from François and Nina Mitjavile. Don't miss it!

The 2018 Tertre Roteboeuf is another powerful, opulent wine from this estate that reminds me a little of the 2005 with its density and tannic structure. Cassis, graphite, black raspberries, and tons of classy oak all emerge from this full-bodied beauty that has tons of fruit and texture, a stacked mid-palate, and a big finish. It’s a massive, sumptuous, and lavishly oaked and fruited wine that’s going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for 25-30 years.

    Tertre Roteboeuf 2019 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

The 2019 Le Tertre Roteboeuf is a terrific success from the Mitjaville family. This amphitheatrical vineyard on the clay-limestone slopes of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, planted with low, cordon-trained vines, has delivered a striking wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with notions of violets, cigar box, sweet spices and loamy soil. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, velvety tannins and lively acids, it will richly reward a decade and more of bottle age. Interestingly, proprietor François Mitjaville contended that 2019's distribution of rainfall had tended to invert the usual stylistic distinction between Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes, his wine from the Côtes de Bourg; yet, on the day of our tasting, geology trumped weather, because as usual the former was more sensual, the latter blockier and more structured.

The 2021 Tertre-Rôteboeuf was tasted directly from barrel à la Bourgogne. (Why don't more châteaux do this, if logistically convenient?) It has a comparatively less explosive, gourmand bouquet compared to vintages that I have tasted at this stage in recent years, featuring dark berries, hints of blueberry, iris flower and an underlying mineralité that only surfaces after 3–4 minutes in the glass. The harmonious palate is an absolute stunner. It delivers brilliant delineation and purity, one of the most energetic Tertre-Rôtebouefs that I have encountered, and a dash of black pepper on the finish. I have to confess: I had to have a sneaky sip of this.
