    Lerner Project

    About Lerner Project

The Lerner Project represents some of the rarest, and most critically acclaimed, Napa Valley Cult Cabernet Sauvignon.

Russell Bevan of the Bevan Cellars fame co-founded Lerner Project in 2016 with Stu and Karen Lerner. Based in the historic Armstrong Ranch Vineyard, 457 meters above the Valley floor on Diamond Mountain, the masterful winemaker describes his work here as “working with a little piece of history”. With the original vines approaching 40 years old, the project’s focus is unrelentingly fixated on producing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon from some of the greatest terroirs California has to offer.

In addition to the Armstrong Ranch, Lerner Project has access to fruit from the high-altitude Houyi Vineyard on Pritchard Hill, Tench Vineyard in Oakville and the Sugarloaf Ranch Vineyard in the far south of Napa. With more 100-point scores than most producers could imagine in their wildest dreams, Bevan has laid the exquisite potential of these sites bare for all the world to see.

    Viniculture and the wines

Lerner Project’s flagship cuvée, Lerner Project “RMS” is the platonic ideal of Napa Valley Cult Cabernet. Conveying the very best of Napa’s prodigious terroir, RMS essentially defines the Lerner Project style and the very essence of the vintage.

Debuting in 2018, “Project 18” is an exciting brand new cuvée sourced from the Tench Vineyard in Oakville whilst adding a touch of Cabernet Franc and Merlot which complete the blend from Sugarloaf Mountain.

Another head-turning wine from this project, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Project 18 got a handful of expletives in my notes. A plush, sexy, full-bodied 2018 delivering pure dark fruits, hints of menthol and tobacco, a deep, layered texture, and a blockbuster of a finish, it leans into the hedonistic end of the spectrum yet also has balance and class. Drink this brilliant effort over the coming 15-20 years.

Including small amounts of Merlot and Petit Verdot, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon RMS is a more supple, sexy red offering great cassis and almost blue fruits, notes of white flowers, spice, and a touch of minerality, full-bodied richness, and sweet tannins. It’s beautifully balanced, has building richness, and a wonderful sense of opulence paired with elegance.
