Château L'Évangile

About Château L'Évangile

As part of the Lafite Rothschild stable, Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) became the sole owners of this beautiful property in 1998. Bringing with them the full power and talent of their Left Bank team, the wines swiftly ascended to the very top of Pomerol, developing a signature style packed with gorgeous fruit and utterly exceptional with bottle age.

Despite its relatively recent emergence as a force to be reckoned with on the Right Bank, Château L’Evangile is a monumentally historic estate. First mentioned in local records in 1741, the property seems to have been called Domaine de Fazilleau and Château L’Evangile alternately over the centuries. Its first owners, the Leglise family, were immensely important in the establishment of Pomerol as a great fine wine region, in many ways similar to its current owners the Rothschilds.

Viniculture

One of the largest estates in Pomerol at 22 hectares, Château L’Evangile is located on the Eastern side of the appellation near La Conseillante and Cheval Blanc. Being this close to St-Émilion, its soils match more closely with the legendary Cheval Blanc’s gravel corridor sitting atop a subsoil of heavy clay than the classic, pure thick clay of Le Pin, for example.

Almost infallibly one of the very earliest ripening sites in the region, this terroir produces what has come to be adored as Château L’Evangile’s signature style of intense, well-judged fruit, concentrated flavours and impossibly silky tannins. Generally a bit less expensive even than Carruades but punching up to Lafite's level, it is a magical estate that has emerged as one of the best in Pomerol.

L'Evangile 1975 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

Another great wine from the 1975 vintage (isn't it interesting that most of the extraordinary wines of this vintage have emerged from Pomerol?), the 1975 L'Evangile was extremely young in the Rodenstock tasting. Bottles I own are exceptional, but far more advanced. This wine displayed a slight hint of amber, as well as a huge nose of fruitcake, sweet cedar, and gobs of black fruits intermixed with scents of truffles. Interestingly, the only other recent L'Evangile with a bouquet similar to the 1975 is the 1982. Powerful and forceful, with rich, jammy fruit buttressed by high tannin, this full-bodied, superbly extracted wine is soft enough to be approachable, but this bottle remains 5-7 years away from full maturity. Drink the 1975 L'Evangile between 2000-2025.

L'Evangile 1978 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (84)

Showing slightly better than when I last tasted it, the 1978 l'Evangile displays a medium ruby/garnet color with some brown at the edge. Although more herbaceous than most vintages, there is plenty of smoky tea and curranty-flavored fruit, decent body, above average concentration, and a spicy, peppery (atypical) finish. Drink it before the end of this century. Last tasted, 7/93.

L'Evangile 1989 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

I have been a massive fan of the 1989 Château L'Evangile for many years - the best wine of the decade when it was still under the ownership of the redoubtable Mme. Ducasse, before selling a majority share to Eric de Rothschild in 1990. It fulfils all expectations here with its intense nose of blackberries, raspberry coulis, clove and wild heather. The most surprising aspect is just how backward the aromatics seem to be. The palate is extremely well balanced with fine tannin. The acidity is perfectly pitched with layers of dark berry fruit, black truffle and dried herbs - très Pomerol. Adorned with a velvety texture, is cruises towards a Merlot-driven finish that is one of the most powerful you will find in Pomerol this vintage. On this showing, you could cellar it for another 5-6 years; if not, I strongly recommend a long decant. Tasted January 2016.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (93+)

Deep red-ruby. Deep, superripe, fully expressed aromas of black raspberry, chocolate, smoke and leather, plus a ripe vegetal nuance that contributes complexity. Velvety, lush and full in the mouth, but rather closed following the bottling; the wine sweetness is currently restrained. Conveys a sense of brooding power. The silky, fine tannins hit the palate very late. A superb vintage for this wine.

A 2,700-case blend of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc cropped at a low 27 hectoliters per hectare (compare that with 39 hectoliters per hectare in 2009 and 31 in 2010), this superb claret was aged 18 months in 75% new French oak. Mulberry, spring flower, black cherry and raspberry characteristics as well as hints of spice and coffee emerge from this full-bodied, opulent, structured beauty. It should age effortlessly for 15-20 years.

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2014 L'Evangile comes racing out of the blocks on the nose with plenty of black cherry, blueberry, cold stone and black truffle scents, quintessentially Pomerol with impressive delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly grainy texture, lovely black fruit here laced with Earl Grey, spice and sage, quite intense and fanning out gloriously towards the long finish. This seems to have gained precision after bottling and I did warn that it may merit a higher score. This is a deeply impressive L'Evangile that might challenge Lafite-Rothschild in the long term. Chapeau!

Stunning aromas of blackberries, black olives, brown sugar and dried flowers. Tar. Full-bodied, dense and layered. Superfine tannins, yet this is muscular and long. An amazing wine reminiscent of the great L’Evangiles of the 1950s. Straight track. Goes on and on. Truly great wine. Try in 2024. Just a baby.

So ethereal and great on the nose with glorious fresh flowers, such as violets, together with black olives. Dark berries, too. But the archetypal Pomerol nose. Full-bodied yet, at the same time, so refined and structured. Glorious tannin tension and focus. Vibrant finish. Shows energy and focus. Try after 2024.

This is a breed apart, with a remarkably dense yet lithe core of braised fig, warmed plum sauce and steeped black currant fruit, coated with ganache and melted licorice details and infused with incense and black tea notes. Incredibly lush through the finish, but maintains cut and drive due to the well-embedded alder spine. Best from 2022 through 2040. 3,000 cases made.

L'Evangile 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (97-99)

The 2018 L'Evangile is composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The Merlot was harvested September 19 to October 2, and the Cabernet Franc was harvested September 25 to October 1. This is the optimal blend—with more Cabernet Franc coming through this year, since it was amazing. Deep garnet-purple colored, it slips seductively out of the glass with glamorous notes of baked black cherries, warm blueberries and raspberry tart plus wafts of kirsch, red roses, rose hip tea, espresso, licorice and sandalwood. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and delivering opulent black fruit layers, the palate has a firm frame of lovely, ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Beautiful.

L'Evangile 2019 (1x300cl)

Decanter (98-100)

From the very first moment your nose approaches the glass you know something special is happening. Seductive, rich, mouth-filling to the point that you really understand what that means. Just pops out of your mouth, with evident density of luscious blackberry and brambled raspberry fruit but also vertical climb through the palate. Violet notes marry with baked earth, grilled liquorice, tension and seduction. Highest level of Cabernet Franc in the blend in recent history, and first time that they have used all of the Cabernet Franc available in the vineyard - also first time to have this touch of Cabernet Sauvignon since the Rothschilds arrived at the property. Have I tasted a better l'Evangile? Certainly not at this stage, and one of the very few wines in 2019 that I can say without question approaches a perfect score. I don't give 100s at En Primeur but this is off the scale delicious, and I already can't wait to taste it in bottle.
