    Mas de Daumas Gassac

Founded by former glovemaker Aimé Guibert in the 1970's, Mas de Daumas Gassac was originally supposed to be a simple country retreat until friend and oenologist Henri Enjalbert convinced him to plant the estate with vines. The first vintage was 1978 and took place under the supervision of the legendary Emile Peynaud; consultant to Chateaux Margaux and Leoville-Las Cases. Since then Daumas Gassac has been at the top of Languedoc's fine wine pyramid, becoming justifiably known as a regional Grand Cru.

    Jancis Robinson (17.5)

Smoke, leaf litter, black cherry, very fine, misted tannins. Dry and stately. Lots of structure and not so much fruit power as some other vintages. Lovely expressive nose though – a really delicate example.

The 2006 Mas de Daumas Gassac red leads with pungent brown spice- and pepper-dusted fresh mulberry and black currant. Like its 2007 counterpart, fresh, faintly tart, bitter blue and black fruits rule the palate, accompanied by smoky black tea, tobacco, and cedar. There is, to my surprise, a slightly stronger sense of ripeness here than in the 2007, and the wine’s lean, bright cast is well-grounded in a palpable sense of sheer density, leading to a finish of impressive tenacity. This promises at least 8-10 years of interesting bottle maturation – again, based on an experience with mature vintages that was recently considerably refreshed. The 2005 displayed a prominently gamy, borderline reductive, and hence slightly off-putting aroma, and its intense black fruits were liberally laced with faintly drying tannins.

A humble Vin de Pays de l'Herault that tastes like a rich left back Bordeaux from a ripe year. Made from a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend, it is vibrant and fresh with cassis and plum fruit and ultra fine tannins.

The 2013 Rouge from Daumas Gassac is a particularly profound wine and one of the best this year from the south of France. Spicy, powerful and deeply structured, it feels like an iron fist in one of Aimé's velvet gloves.

    Vinous (93)

The 2018 Rouge opens with a burst of sweet red and purplish fruit that is immediately alluring. Medium in body and silky, the 2018 impresses with its understated finesse and total class. The 2018 can be enjoyed today for its primary fruit, but I would prefer to cellar it for a few years to gain a bit more nuance. It is such a pretty and effusive wine. Bright acids and persistent tannins, both Gassac signatures, linger.
