    Michel Lafarge

A Volnay based domaine, Michel Lafarge is run by the father-son duo of Michel and Frederic, who pursue a rigorous course of biodynamics in their production in order to maintain vineyard health and minimise the necessity for modern technology. The emphasis is on traditional viticulture and therefore they have a balanced approach to the management of yields, vine age and employ of new oak. As a result the domaine is run by the intuition of the Lafarge family; clearly, to great effect.

    2017

Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Greves 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2017 Beaune Grèves 1er Cru comes from a single parcel of 96-year old vines, the oldest that the Lafarge family owns. It has a well defined, slightly gravelly bouquet that is not as immediate or as sensual as the Clos des Aigrots at the moment. This is more surly. The palate exhibits more brightness, quite lucid in fact, with fine tannin, fleshy red cherry and strawberry fruit, not a deep or powerful Beaune but velvety smooth towards the finish. The seductive quality to this wine is stacked towards the back end, but it leaves you wanting another sip as soon as possible.

Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots 2015 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89-92)

(from a yield of just 15 hectoliters per hectare, the lowest for the domain in 2015): Bright medium red. Liqueur-like black cherry, violet and licorice on the rather tight nose. Not as fruity in the mouth as the two village wines from Volnay but displays lovely savory energy and a suave texture. Incidentally, this bottling was previously labeled, simply, Beaune Les Aigrots.

    Vinous (88-90)

(not frosted but the yield was just 20 hectoliters per hectare): Good medium red. Sexy scents of red berries, plum and spices complicated by leather and earth nuances. Supple, fine-grained and sweet if not yet delivering the complexity promised by the nose. This midweight finishes with a fine dusting of tannins.

Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Beaune Clos des Aigrots 1er Cru, which was racked in August, contains 15% new oak, has a very pure bouquet with red cherries, crushed strawberry and rose petals, just a light touch of vanilla pod emerging with aeration. The palate is very mineral-driven thanks to the gravel-strewn soils that seem to govern the personality of this Beaune. A dash of black pepper enlivens the grippy finish. Very fine.

Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots Blanc 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2017 Beaune Clos des Aigrots 1er Cru Blanc, located just after Clos des Mouches, already has quite a strict and chalky bouquet that opens discretely in the glass. The palate is beautifully balanced, a little fatter than Lafarge’s Meursault, with hints of tropical fruit (guava and passion fruit) that lift this white Beaune into something so irresistible and pleasurable. Gorgeous!

Michel Lafarge Pommard 1er Cru les Pezerolles 2001 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

(no hail here, allowing for a normal crop level of about 35 hectoliters per hectare) Excellent ruby-red. Pure aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet and licorice. Spicy and aromatic, with lovely sweetness buffered by very good vinosity. Concentrated and nicely delineated. This firm wine became more pliant without losing its freshness and precision during its final months of elevage while a couple of the estate's Volnays show signs of evolving quickly.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2017 Pommard Les Pezerolles 1er Cru offers a mixture of red and blue fruit, quite Volnay-like on the nose, touches of violet developing in the glass with aeration. The palate is well balanced with sappy tannin, rather powerful but elegant, hints of pain d’epices towards the feminine finish. Very long and tempting.

Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Chateau des Ducs 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous ()

The 2017 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs 1er Cru has a clean, delineated bouquet of red cherries, cranberry and sous-bois , plus hints of tobacco in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with orange-zest-infused red fruit, quite tart and initially so shrill that I gave this quite a desultory mark. It did dramatically meliorate in the glass and probably suffered from a lack of aeration. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos Les Chenes 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2016 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has an exquisitely defined bouquet with pure red cherry mixed with crushed strawberry, disarming mineralité and tension. The palate is beautifully balanced, symmetrical even, with a fine bead of acidity, well integrated new oak, a little fleshiness towards the finish, simply everything you could desire from a Volnay. Stunning. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy.

Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos Les Chenes 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2017 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a lighter bouquet than the Clos des Chênes from François Buffer, offering cranberry, wild strawberry and a touch of sous-bois and ash, not quite as precise as the best examples. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh acidity and a slightly chalky texture toward the finish, which attenuates slightly. This is another wine from Lafarge that I feel has closed up, making it difficult to score. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets lost half its crop due to frost damage, something that even Michel Lafarge himself could not remember over decades of winemaking. It has a drop dead gorgeous bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, so effervescent with hints of blood orange and freshly sliced tangerines. Underneath all that is wonderful mineralité. The palate is very well balanced with a pitch perfect opening, tensile from the very start with layers of tart red fruit, just a subtle savory note surfacing toward the finish. Half as much but almost as good as the brilliant 2015 Caillerets.

Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru, which lost 40% of its vines after Frédéric Lafarge pulled up the oldest 60-year old vines after the frost damage, has the most exotic bouquet amongst Lafarge’s 2017s. Although the Caillerets remains within that idiom of classic Burgundy. The palate is medium-bodied, feisty and spicy on the entry with hints of dark chocolate and espresso that tincture the red berry fruit. I find the oak just leaving a mark on the finish that will be subsumed by the time it is in bottle. Very fine.

Medium red. Lovely high-pitched floral perfume to the aromas of sherry, redcurrant and spices. Round and sweet in the mid-palate, with ripe, spicy red fruit flavors lifted by a mineral element. Boasts lovely ripeness and harmonious tannins, finishing with enticing lingering perfume.

    Michel Lafarge Volnay 2015 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2015 Volnay Vendanges Sélectionées comes from terroir that Frédéric deems not premier cru, but can create what he sees as a vin de garde—a wine for ageing. The nose is actually more backward than the village cru at the moment and demanded quite a bit of coaxing from the glass. The palate is where the difference lies, as there is a touch more tension and energy here, especially on the tart red cherry and strawberry finish that lingers long in the mouth. It needs to knit together by the time of bottling, but there is certainly substance and density to this Volnay that should achieve its raison d'être.

The 2018 Volnay Village comes from several parcels. It has a very pure bouquet of wild strawberry, cranberry and light crushed stone aromas, all delivered with fine delineation. The palate is very well balanced with chalky tannins that frame the open-knit, pure red cherry and strawberry fruit, leading to an elegant, persistent finish. Joyful.

The 2017 Volnay Vendange Sélectionée comes from vines that lie just below the line of Premier Crus. It has a bright bouquet with wild strawberry, red cherries and a faint, almost ash-like scent. It is very well defined. The palate is quite fleshy and rounded on the entry, finely judged in terms of acidity, with a slightly crunchiness to the texture on the finish, just a dab of white pepper on the aftertaste. Probably one of the most overlooked of Lafarge's Volnays - I suggest you don't.
